Symmetric dimethylarginine correlates with the urea, creatinine, potassium, and clinical scores in feline urethral obstructions

  • Background: A urethral obstruction (UO) is an emergency commonly observed in male cats, which can result in significant clinical and laboratory alterations, leading to complications and death. Objectives: This study aimed to correlate symmetric dimethylarginine (SDMA) with the urea, creatinine, potassium, and bicarbonate levels in cats with UO. In addition, the correlation between clinical score and time of obstruction was evaluated. Methods: Thirty male cats were selected and allocated into a control group (CG, n = 13) and an obstruction group (OG, n = 17). The laboratory analyses were conducted before treatment (M0) and at different times after treatment (12 h [M12], 24 h [M24], and 48 h [M48]). Correlations were established between SDMA and creatinine, urea, bicarbonate, potassium, time of obstruction, and the clinical score. Results: A strong correlation (r > 0.6) was observed between SDMA and creatinine, urea, and potassium in the OG. Furthermore, there was substantial agreement (kappa value) between SDMA and creatinine at M24. A higher clinical score was associated with a longer time of obstruction. In the OG, at M48, the SDMA and creatinine levels were 50% and 41.2% higher, respectively. Conclusions: A correlation was observed between SDMA and creatinine in obstructed cats, and significant agreement between these values was observed 24 h after the unblocking treatment. A correlation among SDMA, urea, and potassium was observed. Approximately 9% more cats continued to have elevated SDMA levels after 48 h of treatment compared to creatinine. This suggests a slightly lower sensitivity of the latter biomarker but does not exclude the possibility of congruent and normalized values after a longer evaluation period.

Confirmed cases of severe fever with thrombocytopenia syndrome in companion cats with a history of tick exposure in the Republic of Korea

  • Severe fever with thrombocytopenia syndrome (SFTS) is a zoonotic disease, and its clinical information and prevalence are important. This study was conducted on 22 feline patients from the Republic of Korea (ROK), suspected to suffer from a tick-borne disease. Four cats were positive for SFTS, and genotypes B-1, B-3, D, and F were identified. Clinical symptoms, such as anorexia, jaundice, thrombocytopenia, leukopenia, and hyperbilirubinemia, were detected. This is the first report of SFTS virus genotypes B-1, D, and F from cats in the ROK. Moreover, our results suggest that jaundice may be an indicator of SFTS in cats.

Molecular screening of Feline bocaviruses (FBoVs) from captured wild felids in Korea

  • Feline bocavirus (FBoV) is considered an emerging pathogen recently identified in domestic cats worldwide. To date, three species of FBoVs (FBoV-1, FBoV-2, and FBoV-3) have been reported, but there are no reports identifying FBoVs in Korea. In this study, we detected novel FBoVs for the first time in Korea in captive wild felids (four European lynx and a lion) kept at Seoul Zoo. In FBoV-positive fecal samples, not only singular infections but also dual or triple infections with three different species of FBoVs were confirmed, suggesting that three species of FBoVs are already introduced and co-circulated in susceptible host animals in Korea. These results will help expand our understanding of the geographical distribution and host susceptibility of novel FBoVs. Further studies are necessary to determine the infection status of FBoVs in domestic cats and the genetic characteristics of the viruses circulating in Korea.

Construction of an avian hepatitis E virus replicon expressing heterologous genes and evaluation of its potential as an RNA vaccine platform

  • To evaluate avian hepatitis E virus (aHEV) as an RNA vaccine platform, ORF2 of aHEV was replaced by heterologous genes, such as eGFP and HA-tag, in aHEV infectious cDNA clones. eGFP and HA-tag replicons were expressed in LMH cells. To confirm expression of the heterologous protein, ORF2 was replaced with the antigenic S1 gene of IBV. The IBVS1 replicon was expressed in LMH cells. To our knowledge, this is the first investigation showing the potential as a RNA vaccine platform using an aHEV. In the future, it may be used in the development of RNA vaccines against various pathogens.

Application of porcine small intestinal submucosa (Vetrix BioSIS®) for recurrent corneal sequestrum in an American shorthair cat

  • A 15-year-old, spayed, female American shorthair cat presented with recurrent corneal sequestrum in the right eye. The cat had undergone superficial keratectomy twice for corneal sequestrum treatment 5 and 11 months previously. Two layers of porcine small intestinal submucosa (SIS; Vetrix BioSIS®) were applied to the surgical corneal defect after keratectomy. Thereafter, clinical signs, such as lacrimation, blepharospasm, and corneal ulcer, disappeared 50 days postoperatively. Moreover, the application of SIS with keratectomy prevented recurrence until 651 days after surgery. SIS could be applied as an additional bioscaffold for surgical repair of corneal sequestrum recurring after superficial keratectomy alone in cats.

Retrospective Study of Anterior Lens Luxation in 8 Dogs (개의 수정체 전방 탈구 8례에 대한 후향적 연구)

  • The purpose of this study was to evaluate the cause of lens luxation and to determine the frequency of vision loss, glaucoma, cataract, and corneal edema before and after intracapsular lens extraction (ICLE). The medical records of 8 dogs underwent ICLE for the correction of anterior lens luxation at the Veterinary Medical Teaching Hospital of Seoul National University from August 2005 to September 2007 were reviewed. The most frequently affected breed was Miniature Poodle (n = 3). The mean age was $10.8{\pm}2.1$ years. Preoperatively, 5 eyes (67.5%) with anterior luxation had secondary glaucoma, 7 eyes (87.5%) had vision loss, and all eyes (100.0%) had corneal edema. Four weeks after ICLE, 6 eyes (75.0%) had normal intraocular pressure (IOP), and 4 eyes (50.0%) regained vision. Corneal edema was reduced after ICLE in all eyes, but still remained in 4 eyes. It was considered that ICLE was beneficial in the management of anterior lens luxation, but the eyes without glaucoma before ICLE had more favorable prognosis than eyes with.

Bradycardia after Dobutamine Administration in a Dog (Dobutamine 투여 후 발생한 개의 서맥 1례)

  • A 13-year-old, castrated male, Shih Tzu dog with a history of acute ataxia was referred to veterinary medical teaching hospital and anesthetized for diagnostic magnetic resonance imaging of cervical intervertebral disk disease. After preanesthetic evaluation including physical examination, blood chemistry, radiography and ultrasound, the patient was premedicated with intravenous butorphanol (0.2 mg/kg). Anesthesia was induced by intravenous propofol (6 mg/kg) and maintained with isoflurane at 1.2 minimal alveolar concentrations. Because the mean arterial pressure (MAP) decreased from 70 to 58 mmHg at 70 minutes after induction, dobutamine was administered by constant rate infusion ($5{\mu}g/kg/min$) to treat hypotension. However MAP did not increase, and heart rate rapidly decreased from 100 to 55 beats per minute (bpm). To treat bradycardia, intravenous glycopyrrolate ($5{\mu}g/kg$) was administered, and heart rate increased to 165 bpm. After extubation of endotracheal tube, the patient showed normal recovery without any problems related to cardiovascular system. Unexpected dobutamine-induced bradycardia was considered as Bezold-Jarisch reflex. It is recommended that clinicians know and prepare the possibility of bradycardia during dobutamine therapy under general anesthesia.

In vitro antibiotic susceptibility of field isolates of Mycoplasma hyopneumoniae and Mycoplasma hyorhinis from Korea

  • The present study was conducted to determine the antibiotic susceptibilities of local Mycoplasma hyopneumoniae (Mhp) and Mycoplasma hyorhinis (Mhr) filed isolates. Minimum inhibitory concentrations (MICs) of Mhp and Mhr field isolates (twelve each) obtained from enzootic pneumonia-like lung lesions during 2009-2011 from Korea were determined using the broth microdilution method. Tylvalosin showed the highest activity against Mhp and Mhr field isolates, with $MIC_{90}$ values of $0.06{\mu}g/mL$ and $0.12{\mu}g/mL$, respectively. Therefore, Korean Mhp and Mhr isolates are highly susceptible to tylvalosin.
