Maritime traffic assessment is important to understand the characteristics of maritime traffic and to prevent maritime accidents. The maritime traffic assessment can be calculated from the ship trajectory data observed by using AIS(Automatic Identification System). This paper developes a maritime traffic assessment tool using ship's position and speed, course, time data from ships navigating waterways. The results are represented in terms of the number of traffic quantity and traffic distribution, speed distribution, geometric collision candidates. The developed tool will contributes to advance maritime traffic safety by VTS(Vessel Traffic Services).

AIS is widely utilized in vessel traffic services for marine traffic safety. In 2021, Korea deployed the high-speed maritime wireless communication system (LTE-Maritime) on the sea following IMO's proposal for the introduction of e-Navigation. In this paper, vessel trajectory data from AIS and LTE-Maritime were used for vessel trajectory prediction to compare and analyze the two systems. The results show that the trajectory prediction error of LTE-Maritime was smaller than that of AIS due to the granular and uniform data provided by LTE-Maritime. Additionally, it was revealed that time interval is the most important factor influencing the errors in trajectory prediction, with the prediction error of LTE-Maritime growing at a slower rate of 17% than AIS. This research contributes to the literature by quantitatively comparing AIS and LTE-Maritime systems for the first time.
In Vessel Traffic Service, the management information on marine traffic control is almost transported by VHF. It is so difficult to exchange a lot of the related information necessary for marine traffic control exactly and in real time. Aiming at improved visualized data transporting network, we examine the methods for transporting and displaying the data on marine traffic controls. In this paper, we design the information networks established by broadcasting method and by internet method using home page in order to manage marine traffics in Masan port.

Since vessel traffic service system was introduced domestically in 1993, the incidence of vessel collision and grounding accidents has been diminished dramatically. However, recently the non-fishing boat incidents frequently occur outside boundary of vessel traffic control zone. Owing to this fact, before expanding and establishing 11 VTS centers all over the country by 2023, Korea Coast Guard has a plan to launch the nation's first researches on Mobile VTS Operation System utilizing Korea Coast Guard's patrol ships so as to devise practical countermeasures about those incidents.

Vessel Traffic Service (VTS) is the service that provides ships navigating on a sea transportation route with guidance and advice about geographical environment and other attentive information for their safety. In this study we point out that currently, constructing additional VTSs is required to prevent ships from unexpected accident on their navigation. We first select several candidate locations for constructing VTSs, based on the amount of marine transportation and its potential development possibility. Then, we present an optimization model in which the maximum area coverage is achieved by determining new locations of VTS subject to budget limitation. The problem can be modeled as a binary integer program and it provides an optimal solution for new VTS locations to be constructed under the consideration of the currently located VTSs in Korea.

Almost every day close passage or near miss events happens in south part of Istanbul Strait between the vessel runs in the local area and pass strait transit. The vessels run in the local area pass close bow or aft of transit vessel or come close and wait for transit vessel because of inexperienced or incompetent skipper or because of time limitation or failure in technical equipment or lack of technical equipment or old equipment. This close passages create profound dangers for the surroundings. By the this research has been aimed to point out mentioned dangers by the concrete as number. For this purpose has been utilized JMS Ship Handling Simulator which has been settled in ITU Maritime Faculty and Environmental Stress Model which has been built up and improved in Inoue Laboratory. Has been put in the senarios which been played during simulation implementations transferred to the numerical risk occured during passage of South Part of Istanbul Strait by the Environmental Stress Model . Thus so, the riskwhich Istanbul Strait face everyday has been expressed as numerical and concrete.

Efficient operation of ships can transport cargo to ports safer and faster, and reduce fuel costs. Therefore, in this study, the pattern was analyzed using AIS data of ships passing near Busan Port, a representative port in Korea. The analysis of vessel traffic patterns was approached with a grid-based node generation method, which can be used for research such as optimal route and route prediction.
From the point of view of safety of life and property at sea and the protection of the marine environment, the Vessel Traffic Management System along the Korea coastal waterway is inevitably introduced. But the establishing priority per area must be evaluated under the restricted budget. In this case, the estimated traffic flow has a major effect on priority evaluation. In the former paper , an algorithm was proposed for estimating the trip distribution between each pair of zones such as harbours and straits. This paper aims to formulate a simulation model for estimating the dynamic traffic flow per area in the Korea coastal waterway. The model consists of the algorithm constrined by the statistical movement of ships and the observed data, the regression analysis and the traffic network evaluations. The processed results of traffic flow except fishing vessel are summarized as follows ; 1) In 2000, the traffic congestions per area are estimated, in proportion of ship's number (tonnage), as Busan area 22.3%(44.5%), Yeosu area 19.8%(11.2%), Wando-Jeju area18.1%(6.8%), Mokpo area 14.9%(9.9%), Gunsan area 9.1%(9.3%), Inchon area 8.1%(7.7%), Pohang area 5.5%(8.5%), and Donghae area 2.2%(2.1%). 2) For example in Busan area, the increment of traffic volume per annum is estimated 4, 102 ships (23 million tons) and the traffic flow in 2000 is evaluated 158, 793 ships (687 million tons). 3) consequently, the increment of traffic volume in Busan area is found the largest and followed by Yeosu, Wando-Jeju area. Also, the traffic flow per area in 2000 has the same order.

It may be reasonable to consider density per unit area over time rather than analyze traffic volume, which is simply the traffic volume per unit of time, in assessing the maritime traffic congestion of a certain area. This study contributes to the standardization of maritime traffic congestion assessment methods for the maritime traffic safety diagnosis institute while seeking a new method to minimize evaluation error due to converted traffic volume per ship tonnage level. To solve this problem, a method to evaluate maritime traffic congestion by comparing the area occupied by a vessel with the area of its route using vessel identification data from the Automatic Identification System (AIS) has been proposed. In this new model, it is possible to use actual data due to the development of information and communication technology, reducing conversion error while allowing for the evaluation of maritime traffic congestion by route.

The purpose of this study is to evaluate port use and the distribution of risk factors in 15 major ports in Korea, delineating the risk of each port after classifying the ports into four risk groups based on estimated risks. The placement of response vessels is then analyzed accordingly. Based on the results, danger was estimated to be especially high in ports where large-scale petrochemical facilities are located, such as Yeosu Gwangyang ports (1.85), Ulsan port (1.33) and Daesan port (1.25). The ports showing the next highest degree of danger were Pusan (0.95) and Incheon (0.83), which have significant vessel traffic, followed by Mokpo (0.71) and Jeju (0.49), which expanded their port facilities recently and saw an increase in large vessel traffic. Next is Masan (0.44), for which many fishing permits in the vicinity. When the relative ratios of each port were graded based on the Yeosu Gwangyang Ports, which showed the highest risk values, and risk groups were classified into four levels, the highest risk groups were Yeosu Gwangyang, Ulsan, Daesan and Pusan, with Incheon, Mokpo, Jeju, and Masan following. Pyeongtaek Dangjin, Pohang, Gunsan, and Donghae Mukho were in the mid-range danger group, and the low risk groups were Samcheonpo, Okgye, and Changsungpo. Among these, all response vessel placement ports specified by current law were above the mid-range risk groups. However, we can see that ports newly included in mid-range risk group, such as Mokpo, Jeju, and Donghae Mukho, were excluded from the pollution response vessel placement system. Therefore, to prepare for marine pollution accidents these three ports should be designated as additional response vessel placement ports.
