In this paper, we introduce a change detection system that can extract and analyze change elements from high-resolution satellite imagery as well as low- or middle-resolution satellite imagery. The developed system provides not only 7 pixel-based methods that can be used to detect change from low- or middle-resolution satellite images but also a float window concept that can be used in manual change detection from high-resolution satellite images. This system enables fast process of the very large image, because it is constituted by OGC grid coverage components. Also new change detection algorithms can be easily added into this system if once they are made into grid coverage components.
Change detection technology, which discovers the change information on the surface of the earth by comparing and analyzing multi-temporal satellite images, can be usefully applied to the various fields, such as environmental inspection, urban planning, forest policy, updating of geographical information and the military usage. With the commercial availability of very high resolution satellite imagery, the concealment of national confidential targets such as military facilities became one of the most bothering task to the image distributors. This task has been carried out by handwork masking of the target objects. Therefore, the quality of the concealment was fully depends on the ability and skill of a worker. In this study, a spectral clustering based technique for the seamless concealment of confidential targets in high resolution imagery was developed. The applicability test shows that the proposed technique can be used as a practical procedure for those who need to hide some information in image before public distribution

Flood caused by Typhoon and severe rain during summer is the most destructive natural disasters in Korea. Almost every year flood has resulted in a big lost of national infrastructure and loss of civilian lives. It usually takes time and great efforts to estimate the flood-related damages. Government also has pursued proper standard and tool for using state-of-art technologies. High resolution satellite imagery is one of the most promising sources of ground truth information since it provides detailed and current ground information such as building, road, and bare ground. Once high resolution imagery is utilized, it can greatly reduce the amount of field work and cost for flood related damage assessment. The classification of high resolution image is pre-required step to be utilized for the damage assessment. The classified image combined with additional data such as DEM and DSM can help to estimate the flooded areas per each classified land use. This paper applied object-oriented classification scheme to interpret an image not based in a single pixel but in meaningful image objects and their mutual relations. When comparing it with other classification algorithms, object-oriented classification was very effective and accurate. In this paper, IKONOS image is used, but similar level of high resolution Korean KOMPSAT series can be investigated once they are available.
Methods of geometric correction for the Advanced Very High Resolution Radiometer imagery of NOAA satellites were developed and applied to the software for image processing of meteorological satellite data. The software for finding the earth location of each scan position and the software for gridding on original imagery were dedigned. On the assumption of circular orbits and the spherical earth, the methods developed were sufficiently accurate in the purpose of most meteorological data analyses.

Road information is very important for topographic mapping, transportation application, urban planning and other related application fields. Therefore, automatic detection of road networks from spatial imagery, such as aerial photos and satellite imagery can play a central role in road information acquisition. In this paper, we use least squares correlation matching alone for road center tracking and show that it works. We assumed that (bright) road centerlines would be visible in the image. We further assumed that within a same road segment, there would be only small differences in brightness values. This algorithm works by defining a template around a user-given input point, which shall lie on a road centerline, and then by matching the template against the image along the orientation of the road under consideration. Once matching succeeds, new match proceeds by shifting a matched target window further along road orientation at the target window. By repeating the process above, we obtain a series of points, which lie on a road centerline successively. A 1m resolution IKONOS images over Seoul and Daejeon were used for tests. The results showed that this algorithm could extract road centerlines in any orientation and help in fast and exact he ad-up digitization/vectorization of cartographic images.

The measurement of river discharge is among the most fundamental observations and is necessary for understanding many water-related issues, such as flooding hazards, sediment transportation, and nutrient movement. Traditionally river discharge is estimated by measuring the water stage and converting the measurement to discharge using a stage-discharge rating curve. The possibility of monitoring river discharge from satellites has been largely ignored, because it is difficult to measure water surface information from space with sufficient precision. In this paper, an efficient approach to discharge estimation using mainly satellite data is developed and described. The proposed method, which focuses on the measurement of water-surface width coupled with river width-stage and stage-discharge relationships, is applied to the Yangtze River with good results.
Surveillance and reconnaissance intelligence in the space domain will become increasingly important in future battlefield environments. Moreover, to assimilate the military provocations and trends of hostile countries, imagery intelligence of the highest possible resolution is required. There are many methods for improving the resolution of optical satellites when observing the ground, such as designing satellite optical systems with a larger diameter and lowering the operating altitude. In this paper, we propose a method for improving ground observation resolution by using an optical system for a previously designed low orbit satellite and lowering the operating altitude of the satellite. When the altitude of a satellite is reduced in a circular orbit, a large amount of thrust fuel is required to maintain altitude because the satellite's altitude can decrease rapidly due to atmospheric drag. However, by using the critical inclination, which can fix the position of the perigee in an elliptical orbit to the observation area, the operating altitude of the satellite can be reduced using less fuel compared to a circular orbit. This method makes it possible to obtain a similar observational resolution of a medium-sized satellite with the same weight and volume as a small satellite. In addition, this method has the advantage of reducing development and launch costs to that of a small-sized satellite. As a result, we designed an elliptical orbit. The perigee of the orbit is 300 km, the apogee is 8,366.52 km, and the critical inclination is 116.56°. This orbit remains at its lowest altitude to the Korean peninsula constantly with much less orbit maintenance fuel compared to the 300 km circular orbit.
