  • Objective: We obtained force-displacement curves for countermovement jumps of multiple heights and examined the effect of an arm swing on changes in vertical jumping strategy. Countermovement jumps with hands on hips (Condition 1) and with an arm swing (Condition 2) were evaluated to investigate the mechanical effect of the arm movement on standing vertical jumps. We hypothesized that the ground reaction force (GRF) and/or center of mass (CoM) motion resulting from the countermovement action would significantly change depending on the use of an arm swing. Method: Eight healthy young subjects jumped straight up to five different levels ranging from approximately 10% (~25 cm) to 35% (~55 cm) of their body heights. Each subject performed five sets of jumps to five randomly ordered vertical elevations in each condition. For comparison of the two jumping strategies, the characteristics of the boundary point on the force-displacement curve, corresponding to the vertical GRF and the CoM displacement at the end of the countermovement action, were investigated to understand the role of arm movement. Results: Based on the comparison between the two conditions (with and without an arm swing), the subjects were grouped into type A and type B depending on the change observed in the boundary point across the five different jump heights. For both types (type A and type B) of vertical jumps, the initial vertical force at the start of push-off significantly changed when the subjects employed arm movement. Conclusion: The findings may imply that the jumping strategy does change with the inclusion of an arm swing, predominantly to modulate the vertical force advantage (i.e., the difference between the vertical force at the start of push-off and the body weight).

  • This study was aimed to help diagnose the vertical root fractures in endodontically and in nonendodontically treated teeth. This was a study about mine teeth with a vertical root fractures. Four cases were nonendodontically treated teeth and five cases were endodontically treated teeth. A collection of information including past dental history, periodontal probing, and X-ray was gathered on each case. One of the endodontic cases had no periodontal pocket depth and was in acute pain. It was confusing to find whether causes were because of endodontic failure or vertical root fractures. Most of the vertical root fractures were found in patients aged between 50 and 60. Vertical root fractures were found in the molar and premolar of maxillary and mandibular teeth. The second molars repecially, which had C shaped roots had vertical root fractures with apical propagation type. The apical propagation type means that vertical root fracture initiates in root apex and propagate to coronal root. The teeth with vertical root fractures of the apical propagation type, which was in acute pain, were very difficult in differential diagnosis of periodontal lesion and endodontic failure. Therefore, the dental history was very important to make a differential diagnosis. Past pain history repeated uncomfortable symptoms in bite was a key of differential diagnosis.

  • Even though the differential drag type machines of the vertical wind turbines are a bit less efficient than the lift type machines such as Darrieus type machines, they have an advantage of low starting torque. The flapping blade type wind turbine is a specific type of the differential drag machines, and it has no need for orientation as well as quite low starting torque. This work is to develop an innovative 5kW class flapping type vertical wind turbine system which will be applicable to a hybrid power generation system driven by the diesel engine and the wind turbine. The parametric study was carried out to decide an optimum aerodynamic configuration of the wind turbine blade. In order to evaluate the designed blade, the subscale wind tunnel test and the performance test were carried out, and their test results were compared with the analysis results.

  • In the present paper, the hydrodynamic properties of a Rahmen-type, flexible, porous breakwater interacting with obliquely or normal- incident small amplitude waves are numerically investigated. This system is composed of dual vertical porous membranes, hinged at the side edges of a submerged horizontal membrane. The dual vertical membranes are extended downward and hinged at seabed. The effects of permeability, Rahmen-type membrane breakwater geometry, pre-tensions on membranes, relative dimensionless wave number, and incident wave headings are thoroughly examined.

  • We have fabricated vertical-type organic transistors (static induction transistors; SITs) with built-in nano-triode arrays formed in parallel by a colloidal-lithography technique. Using this technique, we could fabricate a microstructure in a lateral direction within a large-scale organic device without relying on photolithography. The organic transistor showed low operating voltages, high current output, and large transconductance.

  • Pediatric surgeons are familiar with the posterior sagittal approach to the rectum at sacrococcygeal area and well oriented with the anatomy because of the Penal procedure for imperforate anus. The author utilized the posterior vertical elliptical incisions in 12 cases of sacrococcygeal teratoma since 1987. For presacral tumor(type IV)$^2$, the incision was exactly same as the posterior sagittal procedure for imperforate anus. But the out-growing(type I) or dumbbell-shaped(type II & III) tumors, a vertical elliptical incision was required. For the laterally deviated tumors, a vertical and half-chevron incision was utilized in one case, but an unbalanced vertical elliptical incision was acceptable for the remaining two cases, with shrinkage of the overlying skin. In dumbbell-shaped tumors(type II & III), the narrow waist of the tumor was at the level of the levator muscle, which formed a muscle-belt on the tumor waist. A careful dissection to save the muscle-belt seemed to be the most important point during this procedure, utilizing the nerve-stimulator. After complete removal of the tumor and the coccyx, the levator muscles and the skin were closed in vertical fashion along the midline. For the caudally extending tumors in 3 cases, the muscle complex was divided in midline. Nothing by mouth and total parenteral nutrition was maintained for 1 week and then laxatives were given for 2 weeks in order to give the sphincters rest. Operative scars were acceptable resembling natural vertical midline folds, and the sphincter function was continent in all cases. In conclusion, vertical elliptical incision in sacrococcygeal teratoma is recommended because of the acceptable scar, functional restoration, and because it is a familiar procedure particularly for the pediatric surgeons who are accustomed performing posterior sagittal approach for imperforate anus.

  • There are the stirring test and drain test in the daily performance test to determine the thermal performance of a domestic solar hot water system. The drain test is a test that measures the discharge heating rate while drain the hot water from the top of the storage tank and supply the city water to the bottom of the tank. From the perspective of the user, this drain test is more effective than the stirring test. In this study, the thermal performance were compared through the drain test for a passive type and an active type domestic solar hot water systems consisting of the same storage tank and collectors. At this point, a passive type was used the horizontal storage tanks, and an active type was used vertical storage tank. In the drain test, when the hot water drained up to the reference hot water temperature, an active type which have vertical storage tank represents excellent daily performance than a passive type which have horizontal storage tank regardless of weather conditions. The reason for this is because the vertical storage tank is advantageous to thermal stratification in the tank. After the drain test, the residual heat for the horizontal storage tank was much more than the vertical storage tank, but in the next day the amount of discharged heat were less than the those of vertical storage tank neither. Thus, the solar water heating system which have horizontal storage tank should be adopted preheating control method rather than separate using control method when connected with auxiliary heat source device.

  • The grating is the main purpose of drainage in civil engineering, architecture. This study examined the change and stress distribution by simulating three models of Vertical type grating structures that reduced the resistibility in respect of velocity rather than horizontal type grating and to design a grating with the optimal grating gap. The vertical type and horizontal type grating were compared in terms of the maximum stress and strain to identify the better product.

  • The heat transfer characteristics of free surface water jet impinging normally against a flat uniform heat flux surface were investigated. This deals with the effect of three nozzle configurations (Cone type, Reverse cone type, Vertical circular type) on the local and the average heat transfer. Heat transfer measurements were made for water jet issuing from a nozzle of which exit diameter 8 mm. The experimental conditions investigated are Reynolds number range of 27000 ~ 70000( $V_{O}$=3 ~ 8 m/s), nozzle-to-target plate distances H/D=2 ~ 10, and radial distance from the stagnation point r/D ~ = 0 ~ 7.42. For all jet velocities of H/D=2, the local Nusselt number decreased monotonically with increasing radial distance. However, for H/D from 4 to 10, and for the jet velocity $V_{O}$.geq.7 m/s for Cone type nozzle and $V_{O}$.geq.6 m/s for the other type nozzles, the Nusselt number distributions exhibited secondary peaks at r/D=3 ~ 3.5. For Reverse cone type nozzle and Vertical circular nozzle, the maximum stagnation point heat transfer and the maximum average heat transfer occurs at H/D=8. But for the Cone type nozzle, the maximum stagnation and average heat transfer occurs at H/D=10, 4, respectively. From the optimum nozzle-to-target plate distance, the stagnation and the average heat transfer reveal the following ranking: Reverse cone type nozzle, Vertical circular type nozzle, Cone type nozzle.ozzle.

  • This study was performed for the purpose of evaluating the stress distributions around five different types of implants according to their structures. The stress distribution around the surrounding bone was analysed by two-dimensional photoelastic method. Five epoxy resin models were made, and vertical and lateral forces were applied to the models. A circular polariscope was used to record the isochromatic fringes. The results of this study were summerized as follows : 1. Threaded type implants showed more even stress distribution patterns than cylinderical type implants when vertical and lateral forces were applied. 2. The stress concentrated patterns were observed at the neck portion and middle portion of the cylindrical type implants comparing with threaded type implants when vertical force was applied. 3. Model 1 and model 4 which are tthreaded type implants showed similar stress distribution patterns at the middle and apical portions and more stress was concentrated at the neck porion of model 1 comparing with model 4 when vertical force was applied. The stresses around model 1 were more evenly distributed when lateral force was applied. 4. More stress was concentrated at the neck and middle portion of cylindrical type implants than threaded type implants when lateral force was applied. 5. Model 1 showed the most even stress distribution patterns when lateral force was applied and stress distribution did no occured at the apical portion of modedl 2 when lateral force was applied. 6. There were almost no differences in stress concentrated patterns with or without having hollow design. And the stress concentrated patterns were observed at the corner of apex in model 5 which has hollow design when vertical force was applied.
