Free-field ground motion during earthquake is significantly affected by the local site conditions and it is essential in the seismic design to perform the accurate site-specific ground response analysis. In this paper, one-dimensional seismic characteristics of waste landfill are studied based on the vertical propagation of horizontal shear waves through the column of soil/waste. Seismic response analysis is peformed for short-period, long-period and artificial earthquake ground motions using a computer program for seismic response analysis of horizontally layered soil deposits. The computed peak ground accelerations are compared with the values calculated according to Korean seismic design guidelines. The analysis result shows that the long-period earthquake causes the largest peak ground acceleration while the artificial earthquake results in the smallest one.

An analytical procedure is proposed for the seismic analysis of a soil-structure interaction system with besemat uplift, including the effects of concurrent vertical seismic ground motion, nonlinear distribution of bearing soil pressure under the basemat, and 3-dimensional behavior of the system. The soil-structure interaction system is assumed to have rectangular-shaped basemat on elastic half-space. Nonlinearity of soil spring constants and soil damping coefficients induced by the base mat uplift is modeled by considering not only the reduction of contact area between soil and structure but also the effects of rigid body rotational motion of the superstructure, and the shift in the point of action of the resultant reaction on the basemat. Throught various parametric studies. it has been confirmed that the seismic responses of the superstructure reduce notably while response at the basemat increases considerably. The results also show that the effects of concurrent vertical ground motion. nonlinear soil pressure distribution under basemat, and 3-dimensional behavior of the system shall be included in uplift analysis in order to obtain the correct structural responses.
Orthogonal pairs of rollers on concave beds (OPRCB) are a low-cost, low-tech rolling-based isolating system, whose high efficiency has been shown in a previous study. However, seismic performance of OPRCB isolators has only been studied in the two-dimensional (2D) state so far. This is while their performance in the three-dimensional (3D) state differs from that of the 2D state, mainly since the vertical accelerations due to rollers' motion in their beds, simultaneously in two orthogonal horizontal directions, are added up and resulting in bigger vertical inertia forces and higher rolling resistance. In this study, first, Lagrange equations were used to derive the governing equations of motion of the OPRCB-isolated buildings in 3D. Then, some regular shear-type OPRCB-isolated buildings were considered subjected to three-component excitations of far- and near-source earthquakes, and their responses were compared to those of their fixed-base counterparts. Finally, the effects of more realistic modeling and analysis were examined by comparing the responses of isolated buildings in 2D and 3D states. Response histories were obtained by the fourth-order Runge-Kutta-Nystrom method, considering the geometrical nonlinearity of isolators. Results reveal that utilizing the OPRCB isolators effectively reduces the acceleration response, however, depending on the system specifications and earthquake characteristics, the maximum responses of isolated buildings in the 3D state can be up to 40% higher than those in the 2D state.

A three-dimensional numerical method based on the Green's integral equation is developed to predict the motion response and drift force in waves for the ocean monitoring facilities. In this method, we use source and doublet distribution, and triangular and rectangular eliments. To eliminate the irregular frequency phenomenon, the method of improved integral equation is applied and the time-mean drift force is calculated by the method of direct pressure integration over the body surface. To conform the validity of the present numerical method, some calculations for the floating sphere are performed and it is shown that the present method provides sufficiently reliable results. As a calculation example for the real facilities, the motion response and the drift force of the vertical cylinder type ocean monitoring buoy with 2.6 m diameter and 3,77 m draft are calculated and discussed. The obtained results of motion response can be used to determine the shape and dimension of the buoy to reduce the motion response, and other data such as the effect of motion reduction due to a damper can be predictable through these motion calculations. Also, the calculation results of drift force can be used in the design procedure of mooring system to predict the maximum wave load acting on the mooring system. The present method has, in principle, no restriction in the application to the arbitrary shape facilities. So, this method can be a robust tool for the design, installation, and operation of various kinds of the floating-type ocean monitoring facilities.

This paper describes motion errors due to acceleration and deceleration types of servo motors in NC machine tools. Motion errors are composed of two components : one is due to transient response of a servomechanism and the other comes from gain mismatching of positioning servo motors. It deals with circular interpolation to identify motion errors by using Interface card. Also in order to minimize motion errors, this study presents an effective method to optimize parameters which are connected with motion errors. The proposed method is based upon a second order polynomial regression model and it includes an orthogonal array method to make the effective results of experiments. The validity and reliability of the study were verified on a vertical machining center equipped with FANUC 0MC through a series of experiments and analysis.

In a seismic design, a structural demand by an earthquake load is determined by design response spectra. The ground motion is a three-dimensional movement; therefore, the design response spectra in each direction need to be assigned. However, in most design codes, an identical design response spectrum is used in two horizontal directions. Unlike these design criteria, a realistic seismic input motion should be applied for a seismic evaluation of structures. In this study, the definition of horizontal spectral acceleration representing the two-horizontal spectral acceleration is reviewed. Based on these methodologies, the horizontal responses of observed ground motions are calculated. The data used in the analysis are recorded accelerograms at the stations near the epicenters of recent earthquakes which are the 2007 Odeasan earthquake, 2016 Gyeongju earthquake, and 2017 Pohang earthquake. Geometric mean-based horizontal response spectra and maximum directional response spectrum are evaluated and their differences are compared over the period range. Statistical representation of the relations between geometric mean and maximum directional spectral acceleration for horizontal direction and spectral acceleration for vertical direction are also evaluated. Finally, discussions and suggestions to consider these different two horizontal directional spectral accelerations in the seismic performance evaluation are presented.

Recently, direct load analysis using ship motion program is required to confirm structural safety for the Post-Panamax class large container carrier. However, there is no exact comparative study data for structural response between 20 and 30 wave load. So, in this paper, to compare the hull girder stress response between 20 versus 3D wave load calculation method, direct load analysis and global F.E analysis have been performed for three kinds of large container vessels using each 20 and 30 wave load calculation program. The results of 2D wave load RAO(Response Amplitude Operator) of each dominant load parameter(vertical, torsional and horizontal moment) are generally bigger than that of 30 results, especially in vertical wave bending moment. And the results of structural analysis based on the equivalent design wave method shows that there is a big difference in view of stress, but the stress distribution is very similar for each wave load case.
Seismic isolation is a well-known method to mitigate the earthquake effects on structures by increasing their fundamental natural periods at the expense of larger displacements in the structural system. In this paper, the seismic response of isolated and fixed base vertical, cylindrical, liquid storage tanks is investigated using a Finite Element Model (FEM), taking into account fluid-structure interaction effects. Three vertical, cylindrical tanks with different ratios of height to radius (H/R = 2.6, 1.0 and 0.3) are numerically analyzed and the results of response-history analysis, including base shear, overturning moment and free surface displacement are reported for isolated and non-isolated tanks. Isolated tanks equipped by lead rubber bearings isolators and the bearing are modeled by using a non-linear spring in FEM model. It is observed that the seismic isolation of liquid storage tanks is quite effective and the response of isolated tanks is significantly influenced by the system parameters such as their fundamental frequencies and the aspect ratio of the tanks. However, the base isolation does not significantly affect the surface wave height and even it can causes adverse effects on the free surface sloshing motion.

Herein the surge-heave-pitch motion of a ship in harbor has been analyzed within the framework of linear potential theory. The ship is assumed to be slender and moored at an arbitrary position in a rectangular harbor with a constant depth. The coast line is assumed to be straight. The ship and harbor responses to incident long waves are represented in terms of Green's function, which is the solution of tole Helmholtz equation satisfying necessary boundary conditions. An integral equation is obtained from matching condition between harbor and ocean solutions, and it is replaced by an equivalent variational form. Numerical results sallow that the ship motion can be highly amplified at the frequencies, where the harbor is resonated by the incident wave. At the resonant frequencies, the added mass for vertical motions becomes negative and the damping forte changes abruptly.

Sawing experiments using a two-arm system have been performed in this work. The two-arm system under consideration of two kinematically-nonidentical arms. A passive joint is inserted at the end-point of one robot in order to increase the mobility up to the motion degree required for sawing tasks. A hybrid control algorithm for control of the two-arm system is designed. We experimentally show that the performance of the velocity and force response are satisfactory, and that one additional passive joint not only prevents the system from unwanted yaw motion in the sawing task, but also allows an unwanted pitch motion to be notably reduced by an internal load control. To show the general applicability of the proposed algorithms, we perform experimentation under several different conditions for saw, such as three saw blades, two sawing speeds, and two vertical forces.
