  • In determination of the crest height of a vertical structure against attacking of obliquely incident waves, most of existing studies have suggested to use the overtopping reduction factor due to incident angles. However, they have not considered the amplification of wave heights and the spatial distribution of wave overtopping. In this study, a spatial distribution of overtopping due to the amplification of wave heights along a vertical structure is investigated experimentally. It is recommended that the crest height can be determined by the same manner as that for normally incident waves up to 3 significant wave lengths from the one end of the structure. However, the rest part of the structure can be done by employing the overtopping reduction factor with considering the amplification of wave heights and the spatial distribution of wave overtopping.

  • This study investigates the characteristics of stem waves along a vertical structure under overtopping conditions through laboratory experiments in a wave basin. The uni-directional random waves with Bretschneider-Mitsuyasu frequency spectrum as incident waves were used. This study is focused on the reduction of wave height due to the variation of relative freeboard height (R) and the results for wave overtopping conditions are compared with those for non-overtopping conditions. Though the relative wave height along a vertical structure decreases with the decrease of relative freeboard, the variation of stem width is not significant. For the relative freeboard is greater than 1, the reduction effect of stem wave height by overtopping can be ignored in this experiments. The reduction effect of wave height along the structure for R =0.5 is about 10% comparing with R =1.5.

  • Two-dimensional hydraulic model experiments on vertical structures were conducted to investigate wave transmission characteristics under irregular wave condition. The formula about transmission coefficient for the vertical structure was suggested and the results were compared with Goda(1969). Since Goda(1969)'s tests were conducted based on regular waves, the results showed the discrepancy with this study. The Goda's results were relatively higher than the results from the present study. An influence parameter was quantitatively suggested in this study to consider the effect of structural design factors such as the width of structures, the water depth, and the wave length on the wave transmission, while Goda(1969) suggested the mean, upper and lower limits of parameters for the vertical wall(d=h). The transmission coefficients and energy conservation for zero-freeboard conditions were analyzed.

  • An analytical solution which can be applied to an arbitrarily varying topography is derived by using the continuity and momentum equations. Applying the fact that the solution of the governing equation is expressed as Bessel function in such case that the water depth varies linearly, the present solution is obtained by assuming the water depth as series of constant slope. The present solution is verified by comparing with analytical solution derived previously and investigates the effects of bottom topography to run-up height of vertical structure.

  • The existing formula for estimating the wave overtopping are mainly about the perpendicularly incident wave to the structure and wave overtopping formula for the obliquely incident wave are rare. Moreover, these formula present only the overtopping reduction factor(${\gamma}_{\beta}$) with respect to the incident wave angle rather than the spatial distribution of overtopping along the structures because the length of model is relatively too short for the wave to propagate along the structure. In this study, the wave overtopping reduction factor considering the spatial variation of wave overtopping along the vertical wall is investigated using the hydraulic model tests and the results are compared with the those of EurOtop(2007). The wave overtopping reduction factor is modified for ${\beta}$ > $45^{\circ}$ condition.

  • Numerical experiments have been conducted using the nonlinear combined refraction-diffraction model, in order to analyze the generation characteristics of stem wave, which is formed by the interaction between vertical structure and the oblique incident waves. The results of stem wave are discussed through the stem wave height distribution along/normal vertical structure, under the wide range of incident wave conditions-wave heights, periods, depths, and angles. Under the same wave height and period, the larger the incident wave angle, the higher the stem wave heights. According to the results of wave height distribution, in front of vertical structure, the maximum of stern wave heights occurs in the location bordering the vertical wall. Furthermore, the most significant result is that stem waves occur under the incident angles between $0^{\circ}\;and\;30^{\circ}$, and the stem wave height ratio has the maximum value, which is approximately 1.85 times the incident wave height when the incident wave angle becomes $23^{\circ}$.

  • The tsunami flood the coastal cities and damage the land structures. The study on wave pressure and force on land structures is one of the important factors in designing the stability of inland structures. In this study, two - dimensional wave flume tests on the horizontal wave force and pressure of tsunamis on a simplified box-type structure was conducted. Vertical distribution and wave power of horizontal wave pressure over time were measured by pressure sensors and force transducer. Also, those were measured from the different wave breaking types. The vertical distribution of horizontal wave pressure was uniform at the moment when the horizontal wave force to the structure was maximum under the breaking wave condition. A surf similarity parameter was employed in order to figure out the relationship between the maximum horizontal wave force on the structure as a function of various incident wave conditions. As a result, the non - dimensionalized horizontal wave force tends to decrease exponentially as the surf similarity parameter increases.

  • Tsunami take away life, wash houses away and bring devastation to social infrastructures such as breakwaters, bridges and ports. The targeted coastal structure object in this study can be damaged mainly by the tsunami force together with foundation ground failure due to scouring and liquefaction. The increase of excess pore water pressure composed of oscillatory and residual components may reduce effective stress and, consequently, the seabed may liquefy. If liquefaction occurs in the seabed, the structure may sink, overturn, and eventually increase the failure potential. In this study, the solitary wave was generated using 2D-NIT(Two-Dimensional Numerical Irregular wave Tank) model, and the dynamic wave pressure acting on the seabed and the estimated surface boundary of the vertical revetment. Simulation results were used as an input data in a finite element computer program(FLIP) for elasto-plastic seabed response. The time and spatial variations in excess pore water pressure, effective stress, seabed deformation, structure displacement and liquefaction potential in the seabed were estimated. From the results of the analysis, the stability of the vertical revetment was evaluated.
