  • In this paper, we present a planar single-crystalline silicon x-axis micro-gyroscope fabricated with a perfectly aligned vertical actuation combs on one silicon wafer, using the extended SBM technology. The fabricated x-axis micro-gyroscope has the resolution of 0.1 deg/sec, the bandwidth of 100 Hz. These research results allow integrating 6 axes inertial measurement (3 accelerations and 3 angular rates) on the same silicon substrate using the same process for the first time.

  • The purpose of this study was to evaluate the association between incisor root resolution and sex, age, extraction, the magnitude and direction of tooth movement. The sample consisted of 189 randomly selected orthodontic patients, receiving standard edgewise orthodontic treatment in three private orthodontic onces at San Francisco. Pre-treatment and post-treatment periapicals and cephalometric radiographs were digitized. Measurements and superimpositions were made utilizing a computerized cephalometric analysis program. The variables were statistically analyzed. The results were as follows: 1. Mean apical root resorption values were $0.77{\pm}2.08mm$ for upper right central incisor, $0.88{\pm}2.11mm$ for upper left central incisor, $-0.05{\pm}2.09mm$ for lower right central incisor and $0.11{\pm}1.85mm$ for lower left central incisor. Apical root resorption of upper incisor was greater than lowers. 2. No correlation was found between sex and apical root resorption. 3. Apical root resorptions in adolescents were smaller than those in adults. 4. Apical root resorption was not affected by extraction. 5. Apical root resorption values of upper incisor were correlated to the horizontal and vertical movement of apex; Apical root resorption values of lower incisor were correlated to the vertical movement of apex.

  • A constraint based on climatology is introduced to the cost function of the three-dimensional variational assimilation (3dVar) to correct the error of the zonal mean wind structure in the global data assimilation system at Korea Meteorological Administration (KMA). The revised cost function compels the analysis fit to the chosen climatology while keeping the balance between the variables in the course of analysis. The constraint varies selectively with the vertical level and the horizontal scale of the motion. The zonally averaged wind field from European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts Re-Analysis 40 (ERA-40) is used as a climatology field in the constraint. The constraint controls only the zonally averaged stratospheric long waves with total wave number less than 20 to fix the error of the large scale wind field in the stratosphere. The constrained 3dVar successfully suppresses the erroneous westerly in the stratospheric analysis promptly, and has been applied on the operational global 3dVar system at KMA.

  • Carbon nanotubes (CNTs) arc grown on Ni catalysts employing an inductively-coupled plasma chemical vapor deposition (ICP-CVD) method. The structural and field-emissive properties of the CNTs grown are characterized in terms of the substrate-bias applied. Characterization using the various techniques, such as field-omission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM), high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM), Auger spectroscopy (AES), and Raman spectroscopy, shows that the structural properties of the CNTs, including their physical dimensions and crystal qualities, as well as the nature of vertical growth, are strongly dependent upon the application of substrate bias during CNT growth. It is for the first time observed that the provailing growth mechanism of CNTs, which is either due to tip-driven growth or based-on-catalyst growth, may be influenced by substrate biasing. It is also seen that negatively substrate-biasing would promote the vertical-alignment of the CNTs grown, compared to positively substrate-biasing. However, the CNTs grown under the positively-biased condition display a higher electron-emission capability than those grown under the negatively-biased condition or without any bias applied.

  • The Light Detection and Ranging (Lidar) observation provides a specific knowledge of the temporal and vertical distribution and the optical properties of the aerosols. Unlike typical Mie scattering Lidars, which can measure backscattering and depolarization, the Raman Lidar can measure the quartz signal at the ultra violet (360 nm) and the visible (546 nm) wavelengths. In this work, we developed a method for estimating mineral quartz concentration immersed in Asian dust using Raman scattering of quartz (silicon dioxide, silica). During the Asian dust period of March 15, 16, and 21 in 2010, Raman lidar measurements detected the presence of quartz, and successfully showed the vertical profile of the dust concentrations. The satellite observations such as the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) and the Cloud-Aerosol Lidar and Infrared Pathfinder Satellite Observations (CALIPSO) confirmed spatial distribution of Asian dust. This approach will be useful for characterizing the quartz dominated in the atmospheric aerosols and the investigations of mineral dust. It will be especially applicable for distinguishing the dust and non-dust aerosols in studies on the mixing state of Asian aerosols. Additionally, the presented method combined with satellite observations is enable qualitative and quantitative monitoring for Asian dust.

  • A three branches vortical Hall sensor for detecting rotation angle of brushless motor has fabricated. The sensor is constructed three branches of $150{\mu}m$ width and $300{\mu}m$ distance from central electrode to Hall electrode. Each branch has one Hall output and one Hall input. The central electrode acts as common driving input. According to rotation angle change of brushless motor, sensor gives three position signals phase shifted by $120^{\circ}$. The sensitivity of sensor is 200V/A$\cdot$T at magnetic field of 0.1 T and constant driving current of 1mA. It has also showed three sine waves of Hall output voltages with $120^{\circ}$ phase over one motor rotation. The noise can limit sensor's resolution. We have measured sensor's noise characteristics. The detectable minimum magnetic field is $20{\mu}T$ at driving current 1mA, measured frequency 1 kHz and bandwidth$({\Delta}f)$ of 1Hz.

  • A position-sensitive CsI(Tl) crystal array coupled with the multi-anode position sensitive photomultiplier tube (PS-PMT), Hamamatsu H8500C, has been developed at the Institute of Modern Physics. An effective, fast, and economical readout circuit based on discretized positioning circuit (DPC) bridge was designed for the 64-channel multi-anode flat panel PSPMT. The horizontal and vertical position resolutions are 0.58 mm and 0.63 mm respectively for the 1.0 × 1.0 × 5.0 ㎣ CsI(Tl) array, and the horizontal and vertical position resolutions are 0.86 mm and 0.80 mm respectively for the 2.0 × 2.0 × 10.0 ㎣ CsI(Tl) array. These results show that the CsI(Tl) crystal array with low cost could be applied in the fields of medical imaging and high-resolution gamma camera.

  • The HANARO (High-flux Advanced Neutron Application Reactor) has operated since 1995. The Cold Neutron(CN) hole was implanted in the reflector tank from the design stage. Before a vacuum chamber and a moderator cell for the cold neutron source are installed into the CN hole, it is necessary to measure the exact size of the inside diameter and thickness of the CN hole to prevent the interference problem. Due to inaccessibility and high radiation field in the CN hole, a mechanical measurement method is not permitted. The immersion ultrasonic technique is considered as the best method to measure the thickness and the diameter. The 4 axis manipulator of the 2 channel of a sensor module was fabricated. The transducer of 10 MHz results in 0.03 nun of resolution. The inside diameter and thickness for 550 points of the CN hole were measured using 2 channel ultrasonic sensors. The results showed that the thickness is in the range of 13-6.7 mm and inside diameter is in the range of o 156-165. These data will be a good reference in the design of a cold neutron source facility.

  • Radar remote sensing is appropriate for monitoring rice because the areas where this crop is cultivated are often cloudy and rainy. Especially, Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) can acquire remote sensing information with a high temporal resolution in tropical and subtropical regions due to its all-weather capability. This paper analyzes the relationships between backscattering coefficients of rice measured by RADARSAT-2 SAR and growth parameters during a rice growth period. We examined the temporal variations of backscattering coefficients with full polarization. Backscattering coefficients for all polarizations increased until Day Of Year (DOY 222) and then decreased along with Leaf Area Index (LAI), fresh weight, and Vegetation Water Content (VWC). Vertical transmit and Vertical receive polarization (VV)-polarization backscattering coefficients were higher than Horizontal transmit and Horizontal receive polarization (HH)-polarization backscattering coefficients in early rice growth stage and HH-polarization backscattering coefficients were higher than VV-polarization backscattering coefficients after effective tillering stage (DOY 186). Correlation analysis between backscattering coefficients and rice growth parameters revealed that HH-polarization was highly correlated with LAI, fresh weight, and VWC. Based on the observed relationships between backscattering coefficients and variables of cultivation, prediction equations were developed using the HH-polarization backscattering coefficients.

  • The quality of high performance concrete largely depends on water cement ratio, porosity, material composition and mix methods. The uniformity of color, texture and compressive strengths are quality indicators commonly used to assess the overall characteristics of concrete mixes. The homogeneity and share of coarse aggregates play a key role in concrete quality and must be analyzed in a microscopic point of view. This research studies the quality of high performance concrete by taking drilled cores in both horizontal and vertical directions from a 1.0 $m^3$ specimen. The coarse aggregate, expressed in digitized $100{\times}116$ dpi resolution images are processed based on brightness in colors through commercial software converted into text files. With the image converting to text format, the share of coarse aggregate is quantified leading to a satisfactory assessment of homogeneity - a quality index of high performance concrete. The compressive strengths of concrete and the shares of coarse aggregate of the samples are also compared in this research study to illustrate its correlation in concrete quality. It is concluded that a higher homogeneity of aggregate exists in the vertical plane than that of the horizontal planes of the high performance concrete. In addition, the concrete specimen showing denser particle packing has relatively higher compressive strengths. The research methodology provides an easy-to-use, direct measurement of high performance concrete when conducting quality assessment in the construction site.
