  • A series of nonequilibrium molecular dynamics(NEMD) simulations are performed to investigate the kinetic energy and velocity distributions of molecules in shock waves. In the simulations, argon molecules are used as a medium gas through which shock waves are propagating. The kinetic energy distribution profiles reveals that as a strong shock wave whose Mach number is 27.1 is applied, 39.6% of argon molecules inside the shock wave have larger kinetic energy than molecular ionization energy. This indicates that an application of a strong shock wave to argon gas can give rise to an intense light. The velocity distribution profiles in z direction along which shock waves propagate clearly represent two Maxwell-Boltzmann distributions of molecular velocities in two equilibrium regions and one bimodal velocity distribution profile that is attributed to a nonequilibrium region. The peak appearing in the directional temperature in z direction is discussed on a basis of the bimodal velocity distribution in the nonequilibrium region.

  • In the present study, the flow characteristics of developing laminar oscillatory flows in a square -sectional 180 deg. curved duct are investigated experimentally. The experimental study using air in a square-sectional 180 deg. curved duct is carried out to measure velocity distributions with a data acquisition and LDV (Laser Doppler Velocimetry) processing system. In this system, Rotating Machinery Resolver (RMR) and PHASE program are used to obtain the results of unsteady flows. The major flow characteristics of developing oscillatory flows are found by analyzing velocity curves, mean velocity profiles, time-averaged velocity distribution of secondary flow, wall shear stress distributions, and entrance lengths. In a lower dimensionless angular frequency, the axial velocity distribution of laminar oscillatory flow in a curved duct shows a convex shape in a central part and axial symmetry. The maximum value of wall shear stress in a lower dimensionless angular frequency is located in an outside wall, but according to increasing the dimensionless angular frequency, the maximum of wall shear stress is moved to inner wall. The entrance lengths of laminar oscillatory flows in a square-sectional 180 deg. curved duct is obtained to 90 deg. of bended angle of duct in this experimental conditions.

  • The present paper is devoted to the modeling method based on an averaging approach for thermal analysis of microchannel heat sinks subjected to the uniform wall temperature condition. Solutions for velocity and temperature distributions are presented using the averaging approach. When the aspect ratio of the microchannel is higher than 1, these solutions accurately evaluate thermal resistances of heat sinks. Asymptotic solutions for velocity and temperature distributions at the high-aspect-ratio limit are alsopresented by using the scale analysis. Asymptotic solutions are simple, but shown to predict thermal resistances accurately when the aspect ratio is higher than 10. The effects of the aspect ratio and the porosity on the friction factor and the Nusselt number are presented. Characteristics of the thermal resistance of microchannel heat sinks are also discussed.

  • Airflow distributions along tunnel and over the cross section are critical in selecting installation location of the velocity monitor to obtain the representative data for ventilation as well as fire safety systems. This paper aims at performing CFD and on-site studies to analyze the longitudinal and cross-sectional distributions of the air velocity in tunnels employing longitudinal and semi-transversal ventilation systems. This study can ultimately contribute to selecting the monitor type as well as the optimal installation locations in vehicle tunnel.

  • The wind flow over two-dimensional sinusoidal hilly obstacles with slope (the ratio of height to half width) of 0.5 has been investigated experimentally and numerically. Experiments for single and double sinusoidal hill models were carried out in a subsonic wind tunnel. The mean velocity profiles, turbulence statistics, and surface pressure distributions were measured at the Reynolds number based on the obstacle height(h=40 mm) of $2.6{\times}10^4$. The reattachment points behind the obstacles were determined using the oil-ink dot and tuft methods. The smoke-wire method was employed to visualize the flow structure qualitatively. The finite-volume-method and the SIMPLE-C algorithm with an orthogonal body-fitted grid were used for numerical simulation. Comparison of mean velocity profiles between the experiments and the numerical simulation shows a good agreement except for the separation region, however, the surface pressure data show almost similar distributions.

  • The paper deals with the proper design of GGH(gas-gas heater) panel elements of desulfurization equipments in a thermoelectric power plant. When fossil fuels such as coal, petroleum et cetera are burnt to ashes, sulfur oxide compounds are produced, and calcareous sludges are deposited at GGH panel elements. In this case, operation of a power plant equipments is interrupted, and a tremendous economic loss comes into existence. One of the purposes of the paper is to find flow velocity distributions and regions of depositions when calcareous sludges pile up on the GGH panel elements through the fluid analysis. In the fluid analysis, flow velocity and position distributions of particles between GGH panel elements are demonstrated according to time variation for ammonia and calcium hydroxide particles.

  • High-pressurized jet is widely using in industrial works. however, few papers studied on the performances or characteristics on that kind of nozzles. And in this study, some flow characteristics with the variation of nozzle aspect ratios such as mean velocity distributions, momentum variations along the center line have been experimentally investigated. As the results, some semi-empirical correlations of profiles of pressure and mean velocity distributions, momentum conservations with the nozzle aspect ratios are formulated. It is expected that these empirical formula can be applied for the random estimations of nozzle performances.

  • Temperature and velocity distributions of hot air flows in rotational molding machines with two different shapes and structures of oven and inlet were investigated by using FLUENT, a commercial computational fluid dynamics code. The shape and structure of oven and inlet in current rotational molding machine were improved. Two different sizes of mold inside each oven were considered in the analysis. Temperature and velocity distributions of hot air flows in two different rotational molding machines were compared to each other. In order to reduce cycle time and improve product quality in current rotational molding machine, the improved shape and structure of oven and inlet were proposed.
