A numerical method and experiments for the aerodynamic design of high performance two-stage axial flow fans was carried out. A vortex ring element method used for the aerodynamic analysis of the propellers was extended to the fan-duct system. Fan Performance and velocity profiles at the fan inlet and outlet are compared with experimental data for the validations of numerical method. Performance test was done based on KS B 6311(testing methods for turbo-fans and blowers). The velocity profile was obtained using a 5-hole pitot tube by the non-nulling method. The two stage axial flow fan configurations for the optimal operation conditions were set by using the experimental results for the single rotating axial flow fan and the single stage axial flow fan. The single rotating axial flow fan showed relatively low efficiency due to the swirl velocities behind rotor exit which produced pressure losses. In contrast, the single stage and the two-stage axial flow fans showed performance improvements due to the swirl velocity reduction by the stator. The peak efficiency of the two stage axial flow fan was improved by 21% and 6%, compared to the single rotating axial flow fan and the single stage axial flow fan, respectively.
PURPOSES : This research aims to estimate the occurrence of hydroplaning on roads based on the road alignment types and rainfall intensity in Seoul. METHODS : Three types of data were used for estimation of hydroplaning in this study. The Inner Circulation Road (12.5 km) to the Bukbu Expressway (7.4 km) in Seoul was selected as the test road and data was collected for road information using a probe-vehicle. Precipitation was observed from Automatic Weather System in Seoul. These data were interpolated by applying Inverse Distance Weighted Methodology for hydroplaning estimation. Finally, the water depth information of the roads was observed using an RCM411 device. RESULTS : This study demonstrated that the cross slope with small-angle-tilt or vertical section with large-angle-tilt are the primary factors causing hydroplaning on the roads. The flow velocity on steep slope is high; however, large drainage lengths result in hydroplaning on the roads. CONCLUSIONS : This result can contribute towards the reduction of car accidents on rainy days. Furthermore, information regarding hydroplaning can be delivered to drivers more rapidly and precisely in the future.
Studies were performed on an ARS using SDINS's RLG and the geomatic sensor. To develop the ARS, experiments were performed to determine the characteristics of the RLG and geomatic sensor. Based on the results, to reduce the angular position errors of the RLG, which accumulate from the angular velocity data, an algorithm was studied that uses the Extended Kalman filter (EKF) to compensate the RLG data and geomatic sensor data. To verify the performance of the developed algorithm for reducing the cumulative angular errors, experiments that included the developed EKF were performed. Through these, it was shown that a drastic reduction in the angular errors of the RLG were achieved.
In the pesticides sprays, spray and atomization technologies to increase the deposition and reduce the drift are briefly reviewed. Further research is needed to deduce a measure of drift risk in sprays with different structures, velocity profiles. For flat fan nozzles, the data of breakup length and thickness of liquid sheet are essential to understand the atomization processes and develop the transport model to target. In the air-assisted spray technology to reduce drift, further works on the effect of application height on drift and air assistance on droplet size should be followed. In addition, methods for quantifying included air in the air inclusion techniques are required. A few researches on the droplet size of fallout can be found in the literature. A combined technology with electrostatic method into one of method for the reduction of drift may be an effective strategy for increasing deposition and reducing drift.
Water droplet erosion is one of major concerns in the design of modern large fossil steam turbines because it causes serious operational problems such as performance degradation and reduction of service life. A new erosion model has been developed in the present study for the prediction of water droplet erosion of rotor blades operated in wet steam conditions. The major four erosion parameter : impact velocity, impacting droplet flow rate, droplet size and hardness of target are involved in the model so that it can also be used for engineering purpose at the design stage of rotor blades. Comparison of the predicted erosion rate with the measured data obtained from the practical steam turbine operated for more than 90,000 hours shows good agreement.
For the reduction of fuel consumption of high speed, the aerodynamic drag must be reduced. In early vehicle design process, it is very important to have information about aerodynamic characteristics of design models. In this phase CFD methods are usually used to predict the aerodynamic forces. But commercial programs using turbulence models cannot give a good agreement with experimental result and have also problems with convergence. PowerFLOW employs a new technology called DIGITAL PHYSICS, which provides a different approach to simulating fluids. DIGITAL PHYSICS uses a lattice-based approach (extended from lattice-gas and lattice-Boltzmann methods) where time, space and velocity are discrete. This discrete system represents the Wavier-Stokes continuum behavior without the numerical instability Issues of traditional CFD solvers, such as convergence. In this paper, aerodynamic performance of vehicles are simulated using PowerFLOW by Exa and results are compared with experimental wind tunnel data.
Near-field acoustic holography is a powerful tool to visualize sound sources. This method requires pressure measurement at many points for a good hologram. Thus one has to measure carefully so that errors due to the uncertainty of position, sensor mismatch, and so on are reduced. A method to solve this problem is to use a well-designed measurement system. This paper introduces a sound visualization system at center for noise and vibration control (NOVIC), KAIST, and addresses the advantages in terms of the error reduction. The system consists of array microphones, array jigs, a system to control the position and the velocity of the jigs, a data acquisition system, and a monitoring system. This paper also shows some sound visualization results when the system is applied to a speaker and a computer. The results verifies that the sound visualization system is useful for identifying sound sources.
A computational study has been performed using a chimera scheme to study the various operating processes inside a ballistic range. The compression flow fields in the pump tube and projectile motion in the launch tube are captured for various piston masses and diaphragm rupture pressures. The effect of a shock tube in between the pump tube and launch tube is analyzed. The results are compared with available experimental data. It is noted that, by adding a shock tube in between the pump tube and launch tube, the peak pressure in the ballistic range can be reduced without appreciable reduction in the velocity of the projectile.
The Production of fine wire through wet wire drawing process with appropriate pass schedule would be impossible without understanding of relationship among many process parameters. Therefore, this paper investigates the relationship among process parameters of wet wire drawing process. In this study, it is possible to obtain the important basic data that can be used in the pass schedule of multi-pass wet wire drawing process. In order to verify the effectiveness of the analysis, pass redesign was performed based on the result of analysis to reduce the wire breakage. The wire breakage between the conventional pass schedule and the redesigned pass schedule was compared by the FE analysis and the wet win drawing experiment.
