A Method to Optimize Stability and Wheel Wear in Railway Bogies

  • In this paper, a procedure is proposed to optimize bogie suspension parameters in view of minimizing wheel wear produced by curve negotiation, though meeting stability requirements. The problem is dealt with in the form of a constrained minimization problem, in which wheel wear evaluated over a given service scenario is introduced as the cost function to be minimized, and the requirements on vehicle stability are formulated in terms of constraints. The procedure is applied to the case of a non-powered passenger car for high-speed service, and the results obtained are discussed. It is shown that long wheelbase bogie may provide better overall performances than bogies having comparatively short wheelbase. Furthermore, a sensitivity analysis is performed, to define the effect on the optimization results of improving the performances of the yaw dampers in the bogie and of using a different wheel profile.

  • The development of a tilting train with construction of electric line on the conventional railway is required for speed-up on the conventional railway with many curving sections. For development of tilting train, the study and development of the tilting system and tilting bogie having the different mechanism with a general high speed train will play a main role for improving the technology in the field of Korean railway The study and development of the pantograph tilting mechanism in order to keep a good contact behavior between a pantograph and a contact wire by tilting a pantograph on the opposite direction of the vehicle tilting direction. In this study, we analyzed the aerodynamic characteristic of a developing pantograph on the tilting train and obtained the contact force with catenary by aerodynamic lift force by the aerodynamic analysis. We also performed the numerical analysis for design the device controlling lift force on a pantograph. From the aerodynamic simulation and parameter study for a device to control the lift force, we will suggest the various shape and the optimal shape of it corresponding to a developing tilting pantograph. The Fluent software is used for the calculation of flow profile in this study.

비대칭 대수나선 스크롤 팽창기 설계에 관한 연구 (A Study on the Design of an Asymmetric Algebraic Scroll Expander)

  • In order to extract shaft power from thermal energy in a R134a Rankine cycle as waste heat recovery system of a passenger car, a scroll expander has been designed. Algebraic spiral is adopted as the base curve for scroll wrap profile in the compact scroll design. About 19% reduction in scroll diameter is accomplished when compared to the conventional involute scroll. Performance analysis on the designed scroll expander shows that the expander efficiency is 85.5% at the vehicle speed of 120 km/hr and it decreases to 67.2% at 60 km/hr, provided that the scroll clearance is kept at 10 ${\mu}m$. The expander can produce shaft power equivalent to about 13~14% of the driving power within the speed range of 60~120 km/hr.

장기체공무인기를 위한 제주도 모슬포 지역의 기상환경 분석 (The Analysis of Meterological Environment over Jeju Moseulpo Region for HALE UAV)

  • In this study, the characteristics of main wind direction, vertical temperature and wind speed profile near the Moseulpo airfield for HALE UAV(High Altitude Long Endurance Unmaned Aerial Vehicle) is investigated. The results are summarized as follows, main wind direction is governed by air mass according to season and local wind such as land-sea breeze. The directions of landing and take-off of HALE UAV will be selected as the south-east direction in June ~ August, north-west direction in October ~ March, and south-east direction at daytime in April ~ May, September. Annual variation of temperature at 100 hPa showed that temperature in summer season is lower than winter season. On the other hands, wind speed at 250 hPa in winter season is higher than summer season. The threshold values of temperature and wind speed for HALE UAV flight are $-75^{\circ}C$ and $90ms^{-1}$, which were determined by 5 % frequency value($1.96{\sigma}$), respectively.

  • Plug-in Hybrid electric vehicles (PHEV) show great potential to reduce gas emission, improve fuel efficiency and offer more driving range flexibility. Moreover, PHEV help to preserve the eco-system, climate changes and reduce the high demand for fossil fuels. To address this; some basic components and energy resources have been used, such as batteries and proton exchange membrane (PEM) fuel cells (FCs). However, the FC remains unsatisfactory in terms of power density and response. In light of the above, an electric storage system (ESS) seems to be a promising solution to resolve this issue, especially when it comes to the transient phase. In addition to the FC, a storage system made-up of an ultra-battery UB is proposed within this paper. The association of the FC and the UB lead to the so-called Fuel Cell Battery Electric Vehicle (FCBEV). The energy consumption model of a FCBEV has been built considering the power losses of the fuel cell, electric motor, the state of charge (SOC) of the battery, and brakes. To do so, the implementing a reinforcement-learning energy management strategy (EMS) has been carried out and the fuel cell efficiency has been optimized while minimizing the hydrogen fuel consummation per 100km. Within this paper the adopted approach over numerous driving cycles of the FCBEV has shown promising results.

  • 고속 비행체에 연료를 공급하고, 내/외부의 열부하를 처리하기 위한 연료공급 및 냉각계통의 예비 열설계를 수행하였다. 이를 위해 임의의 임무형상에 대한 해석모델을 구성하고 성능해석을 진행하였다. 산출된 연료소모율과 내부의 유동 상태량을 이용하여 시스템의 각부 경계조건에 대한 열부하량을 계산하고 검증하였다. 이를 연료의 흡열반응을 이용한 시스템의 냉각성능과 비교하여 설계 요구조건을 충족시키는 것을 확인하였다.

An image-based deep learning network technique for structural health monitoring

  • When monitoring the structural integrity of a bridge using data collected through accelerometers, identifying the profile of the load exerted on the bridge from the vehicles passing over it becomes a crucial task. In this study, the speed and location of vehicles on the deck of a bridge is reconfigured using real-time video to implicitly associate the load applied to the bridge with the response from the bridge sensors to develop an image-based deep learning network model. Instead of directly measuring the load that a moving vehicle exerts on the bridge, the intention in the proposed method is to replace the correlation between the movement of vehicles from CCTV images and the corresponding response by the bridge with a neural network model. Given the framework of an input-output-based system identification, CCTV images secured from the bridge and the acceleration measurements from a cantilevered beam are combined during the process of training the neural network model. Since in reality, structural damage cannot be induced in a bridge, the focus of the study is on identifying local changes in parameters by adding mass to a cantilevered beam in the laboratory. The study successfully identified the change in the material parameters in the beam by using the deep-learning neural network model. Also, the method correctly predicted the acceleration response of the beam. The proposed approach can be extended to the structural health monitoring of actual bridges, and its sensitivity to damage can also be improved through optimization of the network training.

Modal and Stress Analysis of Spur Gear in DC Motor Gearhead using Finite Element Model

  • In electric agricultural machine the gearhead is needed to convert the high speed low torque rotation motion generated by DC motor to lower speed high torque motion used by the vehicle. The gearhead consist of several spur gears works as reduction gears. Spur gear have straight tooth and are parallel to the axis of the wheel. Spur gears are the most easily visualized gears that transmit motion between two parallel shafts and easy to produce. The modeling and simulation of spur gears in DC motor gearhead is important to predict the actual motion behavior. A pair of spur gear tooth in action is generally subjected to two types of cyclic stress: contact stress and bending stress including bending fatigue. The stress may not attain their maximum values at the same point of contact fatigue. These types of failure can be minimized by analysis of the problem during the design stage and creating proper tooth surface profile with proper manufacturing methods. To improve its life expectation in this study modal and stress analysis of gearhead is simulated using ansys work bench software based on finite element method (FEM). The modal analysis was done to understand gearhead deformation behaviour when vibration occurs. FEM static stress analysis is also simulated on gearhead to simulate the gear teeth bending stress and contact stress behavior. This methodology serves as an approach for gearhead design evaluation, and the study of gear stress behavior in DC motor gearhead which is needed in the small workshop scale industries.

가속도를 고려한 도로의 설계일관성 평가기법에 관한 연구 (Development of Highway Safety Evaluation Considering Design Consistency using Acceleration)

  • 본 연구는 3차원의 실제 도로형상을 고려하여 일관성을 평가하는 방법으로 가속도 개념을 사용하였다. 차량의 운행과 운전자가 받는 느낌을 근거로 가속도는 안전에 커다란 영향을 미친다. 특히. 운전자를 중심으로 가속도의 크기는 상당한 영향 요소로서 작용되어진다. 이를 근거로 3차원 도로상에서의 각 지점의 가속도를 계산하고 일관성 평가 방법을 제시하였다. 가속도의 계산은 3차원의 변위를 각각 계산하여 변위에 대한 벡터의 합으로 정의하였고 곡선부 내에 속도 예측모형(정준화, 2001)을 사용하여 속도 프로파일을 작성하고 이 프로파일을 근거로 각 지점의 속도를 정하여 가속도를 구하였다. 일관성 평가는 기존의 연구에서 3차원 가속도의 범위를 정하고 g-g-g diagram을 작성하여 해당 범위에 벗어나는 것을 일관성에 어긋나는 것으로 간주하고 평가의 방법을 제시하였다. 본 연구에서는 최소 설계 기준을 바탕으로 가상의 도로를 예시로 들어 가속도의 변화를 계산함으로서 일관성 평가 방법을 적용하였으나 해당 방법이 한계가 드러나 있는 기존의 속도 예측모형을 사용하고 있어 기타의 차량 상태(서스펜션, 타이어, 차종 등)를 고려하지 못하기에 정확한 가속도의 값을 제시하지는 못한 실정이다. 그러나 속도 프로파일만 정의되어지면 복합곡선, 완화곡선 등의 모든 도로형상에 대하여 가속도를 계산함으로서 이를 도로의 일관성 평가에 사용이 가능할 것이나 현재는 3차원 형상이 고려된 속도예측모형과 복합선형 등이 고려된 속도예측모형을 제시할 수 있을 것이다. 향후에는 이러한 속도예측모형이나 속도프로파일모형에 관한 연구가 계속 이루어져야 하고 실험차량을 통한 일관성 평가의 정확한 기준의 개발과 검증이 요구된다.
