To estimate fuel consumption of a vehicle, a car can be tested on chassis dynamometer. In this case, test causes a lot of time and money. To predict the fuel efficiency of vehicles in the design stage or early stage of development, the development of computer simulation model is necessary. Using simulation to predict the fuel consumption, the driving model which consists of time-velocity profile and time-grade profile is necessary In this study, vehicle model is developed in MatLab/simulink to estimate real driving fuel consumption rate with time-velocity profile, time-shift gear profile and time-grade profile. Vehicle model consists of driver model, engine model, power train model, and so on. On-road vehicle tests to verify the vehicle model are carried out for analyzing the result of simulation and comparing with those of the experiments.

The fatality of pedestrian accounts for about 21.2% of all fatality at 2007 year in Korea. In car to pedestrian accident it is very important to inspect the throw distance of pedestrian after collision for exact reconstructing of the accident. The variables that influence on the throw distance of pedestrian can be classified into the factors of vehicle and pedestrian, and road condition. It was simulated by PC-CRASH, a kinetic analysis program for a traffic accident in sedan type vehicle and SPSS program was used for regression analysis. From the results, the throw distance of pedestrian increased with the increasing of vehicle velocity, and decreased with the increasing of impact offset. Also it decreased with the increasing of velocity of pedestrian at accident, and throw distance at the road condition of wet was longer than that at dry condition. Finally, the regression model of sedan type vehicle on the throw distance of pedestrian was as follows; $$dist_i=2.39-0.11offset_i+0.59speed_i-545height_i-0.25walk_i+2.78wet_i+{\epsilon}_i$$.

Acceleration performance, maximum velocity, urban driving energy consumption, and high-way driving energy consumption are important characteristics of electric vehicle driving. This study analyzes the effect of a gear ratio on these characteristics for a front wheel drive electric vehicle. The normalized sensitivity metric is used to compare the sensitivity of these scaled characteristics to the changes in the gear ratio. The sensitivity analysis results show that the normalized values are 0.95 for maximum velocity, 0.91 for acceleration performance, 0.51 for urban driving energy consumption, and 0.24 for high-way driving energy consumption. Therefore, the maximum velocity was affected the most by the changes in the gear ratio. These results can be used to determine the gear ratio of a front wheel drive electric vehicle to optimize the driving characteristics simultaneously.

The effect of size and volume fraction of ceramic particles with sliding velocity on the wear properties were investigated for the metal matrix composites fabricated by pressureless infiltration process. The particulate metal matrix composites exhibited about 5.5 - 6 times of excellent wear resistance compared with AC8A alloy at high sliding velocity, and as increasing the particle size and decreasing the volume fraction the wear resistance was improved. The wear resistance of metal matrix composites and AC8A alloy exhibited different aspects. Wear loss of AC8A alloy increased with sliding velocity linearly. whereas metal matrix composites indicated more wear loss than AC8A alloy at slow velocity region, however a transition point of wear loss was found at middle velocity region which show the minimum wear loss, and wear loss at high velocity region exhibited nearly same value with slow velocity region. In terms of wear mechanism, the metal matrix composites exhibited the abrasive wear at slow to high sliding velocity generally, however AC8A alloy showed abrasive wear at low sliding velocity and adhesive and melt wear at high sliding velocity.

This paper investigates the estimation problem of vehicle velocity and propeller angular velocity on the underwater vehicle. Inspired by but different from a high-gain observer, the cascade observer features a cascade structure and adaptive observer gains. In doing so the cascade observer attempts to overcome some of the typical problems that may pose to a high-gain observer. As in the case of a high-gain observer, the cascade observer structure is simple and universal in the sense that it is independent of the system dynamics and parameters. A cascade observer is used for the estimation of velocity from measured position. In the 1st step of the observer, the output is estimated, and the 1st order derivative of measured output is estimated via the 2nd step of the observer. Also, nth order derivative of the output is estimated in the (n+1)th step of the observer. It is shown that the proposed observer guarantees globally asymptotical stability. By simulation results, the proposed observer scheme for the estimations of vehicle velocity and propeller angular velocity shows better performance than the scheme based on the existing observer.
Objective: The ride qualities of the six passenger cars were evaluated in 4 subjects on the highway and uneven road. The relation between vibration with driving velocity and driving posture were also investigated separately. Background: Ride comfort plays an important role in the vehicle design. Vibration is the one of the principal components associated with ride comfort. Method: The acceleration of the foot, hip and back were measured using B&K accelerometers in this study. The velocity of the passenger cars was maintained at a constant speed of 80km/h on the highway and 40km/h on the uneven road. For evaluating the effects of driving velocity and driving posture on vehicle's vibration level, separate experiments were performed on the highway with 5 different vehicle speeds and 5 different backrest angles, respectively. Results: The overall ride value of the luxury car showed the best result while the smaller car showed the worst value on the highway. On the uneven road the overall ride value level was increased 75~98%. All the vehicles had the SEAT value less than 1. Faster the velocity lowers the SEAT value. The ride quality in terms of vibration gets worst when the backrest angle increased. Conclusion: The smaller car had a first mode at the higher frequency and showed higher vibration level. SEAT value was mostly affected by the seat property not by vehicle. We ranked the luxury car seat had a best vibration reduction quality than others based on SEAT values. When the driving velocity increased, the overall ride values were increased proportionally and the SEAT values were somewhat decreased. Application: Evaluation of whole-body vibration in the passenger car.

This paper defines the design constraint in consideration of the dynamic characteristics and stability in the longitudinal direction of a supercavitating vehicle. Available range of the design variables is calculated by numerical simulation and the cavity modeling of vehicle dynamics is performed first. Configuration parameters of the supercavitating vehicle to determine the vehicle dynamics and characteristics of the cavity are defined as design variables. Design constraints are supercavitation, trim velocity, stability and vehicle dynamics in transition phase. Numerical results show that in accordance with the change of the design variables, the proposed design constraints reflect the physical characteristics of the supercavitating vehicle. This research finds the design region where the constraints of supercavity and the trim velocity are satisfied, and the stability analysis refines the design results by excluding the region where the stability is not guaranteed. The stability analysis is particularly important for a vehicle with the short fin span.

Collision warning systems have been an active research and development area as the interests and demands for ASV's (Advanced Safety Vehicles) have increased. This paper presents an experimental investigation of a collision warning system for automobiles. A collision warning HiLS(Hardware-in-the-Loop Simulation) system has been designed and used to test the collision warning algorithm, radar sensors, and warning displays under realistic operating conditions in the laboratory. the collision warning algorithm is operated by a warning index, which is a function of the warning distance and the braking distance. The computer calculates velocities of the preceding vehicle and following vehicle, relative distance and relative velocity of the vehicles using vehicle simulation models. The relative distance and the relative velocity are applied to the vehicle simulator controlled by a DC motor.

In this paper, we present an ultrasonic sensor based path planning method using fuzzy logic for obstacle avoidance of an intelligent vehicle in unknown environments. Generally, Robot navigation in unknown terrains is a very complex task difficult to control because of the great amount of imprecise and ambiguous sensor information that has to be considered. In this case, fuzzy logic can satisfactorily deal with such information in quite efficient manner. In this study, we propose two fuzzy logic controller which is composed of steering controller and velocity controller respectively. Our object is to develop a fuzzy controller that can enable a mobile robot to navigate from a start point to a goal point without collisions, in the least possible travel time. The ability and effectiveness for the proposed algorithm will be demonstrated by simulation and expeiment.
The problem of estimating the dynamic response of a distributed parameter system excited by a moving vehicle with random initial velocity and random vehicle body mass is investigated. By adopting the Galerkin's method and modal analysis, a set of approximate governing equations of motion possessing time-dependent uncertain coefficients and forcing function is obtained, and then the dynamic response of the coupled system can be calculated in deterministic sense. The statistical characteristics of the responses of the system are computed by using improved perturbation approach with respect to mean value. This method is simple and useful to gather the stochastic structural response due to the vehicle-passenger-bridge interaction. Furthermore, some of the statistical numerical results calculated from the perturbation technique are checked by Monte Carlo simulation.
