This paper presents control performances of a seat suspension system equipped with magnetorheological (MR) dampers using a new adaptive fuzzy sliding mode controller (FSMC). Adaptive fuzzy controller is formulated by considering the acceleration of the seat. It has been demonstrated that the proposed seat suspension system realized by the adaptive fuzzy sliding mode controller can provide effective performances such as reduced vibration.
This paper presents an active suspension control algorithm to improve the suspension performance trade-offs between riding comfort and handling stability. In this paper, a hybrid control scheme is proposed, the idea of which is that sliding mode control is used for nonlinear hydraulic system and the skyhook control is applied to control the vehicle behavior. The parameter variations in hydraulic system are considered for the robust controller design. The performance of the proposed control method is evaluated by simulation and experiments based on a half car roll model which can reveal both heave and roll behavior.

Through experimental works, the damping force vibration problem was investigated, which results from valve and surge pressure in the oil return line of the hydraulic circuit of an active suspension system in a passenger cu. Experiments were carried out under passive system, where an orifice valve was closed and non-active system, where an orifice valve was opened, using a pressure control valve controlled by solenoid. The effects of parameters of the valve overlap and accumulator on smoothing surge pressure was elucidated. It was proved that the apparent variation of damping force due to the overlap amount of pressure control valve is the most important factor to control the damping force variation. The procedure of the experimental works shows the development process of a proportional pressure control valve in the hydraulics system of an active suspension system of passenger car.

The tilting train express (TTX) is able to tilt its body toward to the center of the turning radius on curved railways. TTX can travel at higher speed than the existing normal railway vehicles due to the tilting mechanism decreasing centrifugal force. Also, a new suspension system is required for TTX which has proper stiffness constants and damping ratios because it has different suspension characteristics with the others. Therefore, the suspension systems need to be optimized to maximize dynamic characteristic of the railway vehicle. To optimize the dynamic characteristics of TTX, sensitivity analysis should be onde to identify design variables. In this paper, Design of Experiments(DOE) is used for the sensitivity analysis of TTX.
Nowadays, the more speedy and functional railway vehicles are required by customers, the more broad boundary conitions of train's running are present. At this condtion, it is difficult for the traditional concept of suspension system which has the constant characteristics dependant on the running condition to meet the advenced requirements such as high ride quality. So, the active suspension should be designed to supplied the optimized suspensnion condition actively and to perform the optimal ride quality on the irregula running condition such as on the enterance or exitance of the tunnel or on the crossing the high speed train each others. On this study, the train dynamic model, integration of active suspension system, and the control logic would be proposed, and the advanced performace of train would be shown though the simulation tests.
Air springs are now widely used in bus or truck suspensions due to their advantages over conventional metal spring as coil or leaf springs. Air springs have soft spring rates, which give better ride quality, and additional leveling system provides constant ride height and maintains almost same vertical natural frequencies. A mathematical model of an air spring suspension system with height control system is constructed and dynamic responses of the suspension system are investigated in the light of leveling valve motion characteristic, vertical motion natural frequency. Also, using a full vehicle model, handling characteristics of an air spring suspension is studied and the results are compared with real test results, which shows good agreements.

Compliance elements such as bushings of a suspension system play a crucial role in determining the ride and handling characteristics of the vehicle. In this paper, a general procedure is proposed for the optimum design of compliance elements to meet various design targets. Based on the assumption that the displacements of elastokinematic behavior of a suspension system under external forces are very small, linearized elastokinematic equations in terms of infinitesimal displacements and joint reaction forces are derived. Directly differentiating the linear elastokinematic equations with respect to design variables associated with bushing stiffness, sensitivity equations are obtained. The design process for determining the bushing stiffness using sensitivity analysis and optimization technique is demonstrated.

In this study, running stability and ride quality analyses, applying the 'ISO 3888 (double lane change)' and 'ISO 2631-1' (mechanical vibration and shock) tests, were performed for the suspension optimization of the Korean personal rapid transit (PRT) vehicle. The suspension optimization results for running stability and ride quality were derived by applying the multiresponse surface method. From the comparisons of the optimization results for different ratios of the objective functions of running stability and ride quality, we derived the best objective function ratio of 3.9-to-6.1 to improve both the running stability and the ride quality. With the optimized results, the suspension stiffness became 30.68 N/mm, between the value of the $S_2$ and $S_3$ models, and the damping coefficient equaled that of the $D_1$ model. When compared with the suspension of the current PRT vehicle, the roll angle, yaw rate, sideslip angle, and ride comfort were improved by 0.37, 0.37, 2.8, and 5, respectively.

In the design of a combat vehicle, various performances such as firepower, mobility and survivability, etc., should be considered. Furthermore, since these performances relate to each other, design framework which can treat an integrated system should be employed to design the combat vehicle. In this paper, we use empirical interior ballistic and 3D combat vehicle analyses for predicting firepower and mobility performances which are developed in previous study (1) integrated performance modeling. In firepower performance, pitch and roll angle by sequential firing are considered. In mobility performance, vertical acceleration after passing through a bump is regarded. However, since there are many design variables such as mass of vehicle, mass of suspension, spring and damping coefficient of suspension and tire, geometric variables of vehicle, etc., for firepower and mobility performance, we utilize analysis of variance and quality function deployment to reduce the number of design variables. Finally, integrated design optimization is carried out for integrated performance such as firepower and mobility.

In this paper, causes of wear on high pressure seals for suspension are analyzed, and the result of reproduction test and verification on improved design are described. First, by performing the observation of worn surfaces and its failure analysis, the primary cause of wear on the seals are analyzed. The result of analysis shows that the main failure mechanism of wear is a fatigue wear, and test criteria for failure reproduction are set up with consideration for frequency condition, surface roughness and pressure. Durability comparison test on the condition of low amplitude and high frequency is carried out. And, it is found that the durability of wear on seals by increasing hardness of cylinder and managing for surface roughness is enhanced.
