An objective of this study is to give practical information that could be used for calculating pollutant emission factors and fuel economy from Korean Inspection & Maintenance program, which has been using steady state acceleration simulation mode. Concentration results from I/M test is adequately converted to mass emission factors and fuel efficiency data, which have unit of g/km and km/L, respectively. Exhaust volume flow(EVF), which is for converting emission result from concentration to mass, is measured by tracer method in various vehicle speed - power condition. It is found that there is an apparent second order relationship between EVF and vehicle inertia weight. EVF is expressed in function of vehicle inertia weight in order to estimate EVF in I/M site without measuring device. Converted mass emission results from measured EVF and raw emission analyzer show a satisfactory agreement with those from conventional CVS-bag type measurement system. Mass emission factors and fuel efficiency from measured EVF and estimated EVF also show good agreement to each other. Considering that an I/M program has great advantages to recruit-based emission test in terms of the number of test vehicle, the information in this study can be used for developing an alternative procedure to collect more various data to establish national database of mobile emission factors and fuel economy, even though the driving cycle in I/M program is steady state cycle rather than transient cycle.
As the concerns regarding global worming were increased, the pressure of greenhouse gas(GHG) emission reduction on mobile source was also increased. Carbon dioxides contribute over 90% of total GHG emission and the mobile source occupies about 20% of this $CO_2$ emission. Therefore automotive exhaust is suspected to be one of the major reasons of the rapid increase in greenhouse effect gases in ambient air. In this study, in order to investigate $CO_2$ emission characteristics from gasoline passenger cars(PC), which is the most dominant vehicle type in Korea, 106 vehicles were tested on the chassis dynamometer. $CO_2$ emissions and fuel efficiency were measured. The emission characteristics by displacement, gross vehicle weight, vehicle speed and CVS-75/vehicle speed mode were discussed. Test modes were vehicle speed modes and CVS-75 mode that have been used to develop emission factors and to regulate for light-duty vehicle in Korea. It was found that $CO_2$ emissions showed higher large displacement, heavy gross vehicle weight, low vehicle speed and CVS-75 mode than small displacement, light gross vehicle weight, high vehicle speed and vehicle speed mode, respectively. From these results, correlation between $CO_2$ emission and fuel efficiency was also determined. The results of this study will contribute to domestic greenhouse gas emissions calculation and making the national policy for climate change.
In Korea, the major source of serious air pollution is motor vehicles. Air pollution from vehicles has been annually increased. Then the government will try to control the vehicle emission by applying the effective emission management policy for the manufactured and in-used car. It is necessary to correctly calculate the emission factor for successful propulsion of the vehicle emission control policy. In this study, correlation analysis of exhaust emissions from vehicles between CVS-75 mode and Korea mode was conducted. A total of 25 light-duty buses were tested on the chassis dynamometer system in order to measure CO, HC, NOx PM and fuel efficiency (F.E.). For the test modes, 10 different Korea modes and CVS-75 mode were used. As the result of correlation analysis between those modes, most of the correlation coefficients were higher than 0.90. On the basis of high correlation between those modes, correction factors by driving conditions were estimated. Through the results of this study, we obtained essential basic data to correct difference from those modes.
Experiments have been conducted to investigate emission characteristics of compressed natural gas fueled vehicle(CNGV) by the FTP 75 mode test. Its purification technologies were also investigated. It was found that CNGV was operated on the rich A/F condition by comparison with gasoline vehicle. The Pd catalyst was higher in methane purification performance than Pt and Pd/Pt/Rh catalysts. Up to 60% portion of the accumulative HC emissions(that contains above 80% methane) form CNGV occurs during the first phase of the FTP 75 mode. CO that is exhausted at rich conditions of the air-fuel ratio more than lean conditions should be used for the catalytic reduction of NOX, because the methane is not the effective reduction for NOX in the CNGV with 3-way catalyst system.
In this study, the following conclusions could be obtained from the analysis of emissions contribution rates and features for contaminated emissions by 13,456 gasoline vehicles passed in the vehicle load test (ASM-idle) under the inspection year 2013 to 2017. It was confirmed that the contamination of the CO, HC, NOx by the displacement is reduced on over 3L engine. As a result of comparing the exhaust gas in the low speed idle mode and the AS2525 mode, the exhaust gas in the low speed idle mode was measured high. It is estimated that if ISG function is applied, emissions from idle condition will be reduced. NOx emissions were reduced when the engine power was above 200HP. It has been confirmed that the amount of exhaust emissions are significantly reduced for vehicles manufactured after 2004. As a result of analyzing the exhaust gas according to the season, it is judged that there is a correlation between HC and NOx according to the ambient temperature. The concentration of exhaust emission in vehicles with high accumulated distance increases, which is considered to be the result of aging of the vehicle.
For the correct estimation of air pollutant emission from automobiles which is the largest contributor of metropolitan area air pollution, the total pollutant emission from automobiles should be estimated accurately. Nationwide emissions from automobiles, such as CO, HC and NOx, are calculated by using emission factor and total VMT(vehicle miles traveled). The emission factors were derived from the emissions data on chassis dynamometer with test modes which represent the real driving patterns. In the present study, test modes to derive the emission factors for light duty vehicles are developed by using the real driving pattern data for the urban, suburban and express way.
As the interest on the air pollution is gradually risen up at home and abroad, their vehicle emission regulations have been reinforcing by steps. PM regulation was also reinforced 4times for the last 13years and has been applied to SI vehicles after EURO 5. Additionally, knowing that small particles of PM can easily penetrate deep into lungs PM number was added on the regulation from EURO5+ and is applied to CI vehicles. Also, PN regulation is going to be applied to SI vehicles. But, because the regulation is appled to only a general test mode of each countries that is performed at $25{\pm}5^{\circ}C$, it is unclear whether the regulation can work on the other ambient temperature conditions or not. In this paper, to know that exhaust emission characteristics at the special conditions CI vehicles(CRDi w, w/o DPF) were tested using 5-cycle mode, NEDC mode at 5-ambient temperatures (35, 25, 0, -7 and -15) and the exhaust emission test results were discussed. The results show that the vehicle with DPF emits much low PM(and PM number) on all of the test mode. However, NOx of the other mode was emitted higher than regulation mode. Also. NOx was sharply increased according to decreasing Ambient Temperature.
The purpose of this paper is to determine the fuel change and weight change impact on the fuel economy and emission characteristic of ICE (Internal Combustion Engine) vehicle. According to fuel type, fuel consumption and emission characteristics were measured and fuel used in this paper was gasoline, diesel, and LPG. Four vehicles with different weight were tested and the fuel economy were compared and analyzed by using scatter graph. Test was carried out using chassis dynamometer, CVS (Constant Volume Sampler), and emission measurement system. Diesel vehicle less emited $CO_2$ compared to gasoline and LPG. Even if same $CO_2$ between gasoline and LPG, there are difference fuel economy depending on carbon proportion of specific fuel. The heavier weight of vehicle, the worse of fuel economy and Better fuel economy performance on highway driving mode.
The method of emission inspection for Heavy-duty diesel vehicles has been engine speed type Lug-down 3mode. This method could bring damage to decrepit vehicles under high speed and high load condition and it could not apply the driving pattern on the road. For these reasons, this study has started to create new emission inspection which is appropriate for Korea's road infrastructure. KD 147 would be applied to light-duty diesel vehicles from july 2010 after model operations. Therefore, this study has investigated new emission inspection system for heavy-duty diesel vehicles, except for light-duty diesel vehicles. In consideration of domestic conditions to meet the new load test method in this study, the Lug-down3 mode vehicle speed method was developed for the first time in korea.
