Vegetative communities of created wetlands often display lower species richness, less cover, higher occurrence of non-native or invasive species, and fewer obligate wetlands species than those in natural wetlands, thus failing to meet basic success criteria for wetland mitigation. This study examined the effects of two design elements, disking-induced microtopography and hydrologic regime, on the first year vegetation development pattern of a mitigation wetland newly created in the Virginia piedmont. Elevation and species cover were measured along replicate multiscale circular transects in two adjacent wetland sites that are different in their hydrologic regime. Two microtopographic indices, tortuosity (T) and limiting elevation difference (LD), were calculated from the elevation measurements. Both indices were higher in disked plots than non-disked plots, showing the effect of disking on microtopography. Out of forty-one vegetation taxa observed in the wetland, 29 taxa were naturally colonized and 12 taxa were seeded. All plots except one non-disked plot were dominated by wetland vegetation. Species richness and diversity were higher in disked than in non-disked plots. Vegetation community development seemed also influenced significantly by hydrologic regime of the site. The effect of microtopography on species richness and diversity was more pronounced in a relatively dry site compared to a wet site. In addition, percent cover, species richness and diversity of vegetation were positively correlated with microtopographic indices such as T and LD. Two design elements, microtopography and hydrologic regime, should be considered and incorporated in wetland creation to enhance plant community development.

Unpaved forest roads are common accessways in mountain areas being used for forestry purposes. The presence of forest roads produces large volumes of surface runoff and sediment yield due to changes in soil properties and hillslope profile. Rainfall simulation experiments were conducted to estimate the impacts of above-ground vegetation and antecedent soil water condition on hydrology and sediment processes. A total of 9 small plots($1m{\times}0.5m$) were installed to represent different road surface conditions: no-vegetation(3 plots), vegetated surface(3 plots), and cleared vegetation surface(3 plots). Experiments were carried out on dry, wet, and very wet soil moisture conditions for each plot. Above ground parts of vegetation on road surface influenced significantly on surface runoff. Runoff from no-vegetation roads(39.24L) was greater than that from vegetated(25.05L), while cleared-vegetation condition is similar to no-vegetation roads(39.72L). Runoff rate responded in a similar way to runoff volume. Soil erosion was also controlled by land cover, but the magnitude is little than that of surface runoff. Even though slight differences among antecedent soil moisture conditions were found on both runoff and soil erosion, runoff rate and soil losses were increased in very wet condition, followed by wet condition. The experiments suggest that vegetation cover on forest road surface seems most effective way to reduce surface runoff and soil erosion during storm periods.

Natural Vegetation cover, which is very important earth resource, has been significantly altered by humans in some manner. Since this has currently resulted in a significant effect on global climate, various studies on vegetation environment including forest have been performed and the results are utilized in policy decision making. Remotely sensed data can detect, identify and map vegetation cover change based on the analysis of spectral characteristics and thus are vigorously utilized for monitoring vegetation resources. Among various vegetation indices extracted from spectral reponses of remotely sensed data, NDVI is the most popular index which provides a measure of how much photosynthetically active vegetation is present in the scene. In this study, for change detection in vegetation cover, a Multi-layer Perceptron Network (MLPN) as a nonparametric approach has been designed and applied to MODIS/Aqua vegetation indices 16-day L3 global 250m SIN Grid(v005) (MYD13Q1) data. The feature vector for change detection is constructed with the direct NDVI diffenrence at a pixel as well as the differences in some subset of NDVI series data. The research covered 5 years (2006-20110) over Korean peninsular.

Baton Peninsula, where Sejong station is located, mainly covered with snow and vegetation. Because this area is sensitive to climate change, monitoring of surface variation is important to understand climate change on the polar region. Due to the inaccessibility, the remote sensing is useful to continuously monitor the area. The objectives of this research are 1) map classification of land-cover types in the Barton Peninsular around King Sejong station and 2) grasp distribution of vegetation species in classified area. A KOMPSAT-2 multispectral satellite image was used to classify land-cover types and vegetation species. We performed classification with hierarchical procedure using KOMPSAT-2 satellite image and ground reference data, and the result is evaluated for accuracy as well. As the results, vegetation and non-vegetation were clearly classified although species shown lower accuracies within vegetation class.

In this study analysis the status of land cover change and land degradation of Tuul-Basin in Mongolia by using the Landsat satellite images that was taken in year of 1990, 2001 and 2011 respectively in the summer at the time of great growth of green plants. Analysis of the land cover change during time series data in Tuul-Basin, Mongolia and NDVI (Normalized Difference Vegetation Index), SAVI (Soil-Adjusted Vegetation Index) and LST (Land Surface Temperature) algorithm are used respectively. As a result shows, there was a decrease of forest and green area and increase of dry and fallow land in the study area. It was be considered as trends to be a land degradation. In addition, there was high correlation between LST and vegetation index. The land cover change or vitality of vegetation which is taken in study area can be closely related to the temperature of the surface.
This study attempts to analyze the difference among the variations of ecological distribution in Gobi desert and Manchuria through satellite based land cover classification. This was motivated by two well-known facts: 1) Gobi desert, which is an old source region, had been gradually expanded eastward; 2) Manchuria, which is located in east of Gobi desert, was observed as a new source region of yellow dust. An unsupervised classification called ISODATA clustering method was employed to detect the land cover change and to characterize the status of desertification and its expanding trends using NDVI (Normalized Difference Vegetation Index) derived from VEGETATION sensor onboard the SPOT satellite for 1999 and 2007. We analyzed NDVI annual variation pattern for every classes and divide into 5 level according to their vegetation's density level based on NDVI. As results, Gobi desert is showed positive variation: a decrease $78,066km^2$ in central Gobi desert and out skirts of Gobi desert (level-0) but Manchuria area is worse than previous time: an increase $25,744km^2$.
The present study analyses the effect of land use on the vegetation of some desert ecosystems in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates (UAE). Three sites were selected to represent different types of land use, inside Umm Al-Banadeq forest, outside the forest and along Abu Dhabi-Al Ain Trucks Road. In total, fifty-two stands were examined; including a matrix of 14 species ${\times}$ 52 stands. Based on species cover data, stands were classified using TWINSPAN and ordinated using DCA. Four vegetation groups were generated at level three of classification. Zygophyllum mandavillei was dominant in most vegetation groups; Heliotropium bacciferum dominated vegetation groups inhabited the forest. Species richness, species turnover, relative evenness and relative concentration of dominance of forest vegetation groups were 2.8, 5.7, 0.7, and 2.0, respectively. The differences were attributed to both natural variability and forestry-induced changes, including change in land use, drainage and ploughing and shading by trees. Vegetation group inhabited Abu Dhabi-Al Ain Trucks Road, that were dominated by Haloxylon salicornicum and Zygophyllum mandavillei have high total cover (8.8 m per $m^{-1}$). Most community and vegetation attributes were significantly higher inside the forest than outside. Human interventions and environmental factors affected species diversity and abundance of these communities.
In this paper the extraction method for the best suitable green vegetation area in urban area, Daegu, Korea, was developed using satellite images (1994, 1999, Landsat TM). For this, the GIS overlay analysis of GVI (Green Vegetation Index), SBI (Soil Brightness index), NWI (None-Such wetness Index) was performed to estimate the best suitable green vegetation area. Also, the statistical documents, algorithm and Tasseled-Cap index were used to recognize the change of land cover such as cultivation area, urban area, and damaged area. Through the result of this study, it is possible to monitor the large sized reclamation of land by drainage or damaged area by forest fires. Moreover, information with the change of green vegetation and the status of cultivation by GVI, but also moisture content by percentage by NWI and surface class by SBI can be obtained.

This study estimates possibility and limitation on production of DEM using aerial photo by comparison of DEMs using aerial photo and digital map. Mountain and urban areas show higher elevation in DEM using aerial photo than in DEM using digital map, due to height of vegetation cover and buildings, respectively. However, artificial affects due to bridge, embankment and road construction are responsible for areas with higher elevation in DEM using digital map than in DEM using aerial photo. This difference in elevation between DEMs seems to be caused by rapid change in real elevation that is not reflected in digital map. There is little difference in elevation between DEMs in plain and area with little or no vegetation cover. This study suggests that problems associated with vegetation cover and error by GCP should be fixed, although DEM using aerial photo can quantitatively and 3-dimensionally reconstruct topography with a high resolution.

A hydro-geomorphologic change in a sand bed channel reach and vegetation expansion by changes in the How regime is analyzed in this study. Field and aerial photo surveys, basic hydrological analysis about flow regime change due to two dams, Andong Dam and Imha Dam, on the upstream river and computer modeling are conducted. Two Dams in the study reach have obviously affected downstream channel in many ways including the bed particle coarsening, vegetation expansion on the sandbars and following river channel braiding. The phenomenon of no vegetation on the large point bar in front of Hahwe Village seems due to disturbance of the sandbar surface probably due to the cross flow in the meander reach during the flood. Another reason for no vegetation is that the sandbar on this reach has lower subsurface water lovels, as compared with the others in the up- and downstream of the reach where vegetation expanded, which would hinder vegetation from germinating and growing on the sandbar.
