  • The results obtained from te field investigations of Chuja Island conducted for 5 days from July 18 to 22, 1980 and from August 12 to 16, 1981 are summarized as follows: Vascular plants of this island disclosed by the present study consisted of 86 families, 210 genera, 228 species, 38 varieties and 4 래금. Nineteen species of evergreen broad-leaved trees were discovered, including Litsea japonica Juss, Camellia japonica L. and Machilus thunbergii Sieb. et Zucc. These indeciduous latifoliate trees were preserved in poor condition. Ten-twenty years old Pinus thunbergii was confirmed to be the predominant species. Seaside plants encountered were 6 species, including Vitex rotundifolia L. Fil. and Asterspathullfoius Max., but they were poorly distributed. Naturalized plants comprised a total of 12 species. This varied number of species is considered attributable to the frequent access of men owing to convenient marine traffic. the destruction of vegetation of this island may be attributed to human interference (loggin for boat construction, building and charcoal materials) ever escalated by high population density. It is worthy of noting that Bochmeria penosa Nakai et Stake which forms a large community in this island can be used as textile resources.

  • This paper contains the results obtained by the ecological investigation in Bijin island. The investigation was conducted during 3 dyas from Aug. 3 to Aug. 5, 1981. The results are followings. The tracheophyta of this island was recoreded as 64 families, 128 genera, 142 species, 21 varieties and 2 forma. Twenty eight species of ever-green broad-leaved trees comprising Gardenia jasminoides for. grandiflora, Castanopsis cuspidata var. thunbergii, Camellia japonica, etc. wad distributed in the southern area of the island. And there was the wind-break forest mainly consisting of aged Machilus thunbergii, Celtis sinensis and Zelkova serrata in the northern area. The northern area dominated by the second forest of Pinus thunbergii, where the whole residents lead their lives, shows the high population density and pure farming rate, so the natural degree is low. The other hand, there was the well-preserved forest of broad-leaved trees containing Zelkoba serrata. Acer palmatum and Quercus serrata, etc. in southern area having a steep peak, Seonyudai, and no resident. So, the potential vegetation of this island is assumed as the forest of ever-green broad-leaved trees which belongs to the forest of subtropics.

  • Although many researches for heat island study have been developed, there is little attempt to link the findings to actual and hypothetical scenarios of urban developments which would help to mitigate the Urban Heat Island (UHI) in cities. The aim of this paper is to analyze the UHI at urban area with different geometries, land use, and environmental factors, and emphasis on the influence of different geometric and environmental parameters on ambient air temperature. In order to evaluate these effects, the parameters of (i) Air pollution (i.e. Aerosol Optical Thickness (AOT)), (ii) Green space Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI), (iii) Anthropogenic heat (AH) (iv) Building density (BD), (v) Building height (BH), and (vi) Air temperature (Ta) were mapped. The optimum operational scales between Heat Island Intensity (HII) and above parameters were evaluated by testing the strength of the correlations for every resolution. The best compromised scale for all parameters is 275m resolution. Thus, the measurements of these parameters contributing to heat island formation over the study areas of Hong Kong were established from mathematical relationships between them and in combination at 275m resolution. The mathematical models were then tabulated to show the impact of different percentages of parameters on HII. These tables are useful to predict the probable climatic implications of future planning decisions.

  • Twelve dictyostelids occurred in the southern coastal area and islands; nine species of genus Dictvostelium and three species of genus Polysphoslylium. In ten sites of evergreen-broadleaved forests, 12 species were identified and average prensent species was 6.0. D. mucoroiles, D. misutum, P. pallilum and P. violaceum were dominant species. The first dominant species was D. mucoroides. Its importance value was 55 and was much more than the others. Especially, for P. violaceum presence was 90%. It was much higher. But relative density was no more than 3%. D. minutum that was not common species had comparahly high im- portance value. In two sites of evergreen conifers, only four species occurred; D. mucoroiles, D. brefeldianum, D. capitatum and P. pallilum Average present species was 2.0. Dominant species was D. mucoroides. Average of total clones in evergreen-hroadleaved forests and evergreen conifers were irrespectively 8,608 and 9,541. As for the number of species, cellular slime molds distributed variably in evergreen-broadleaved forests than evergreen conifers.

  • Background: Organic carbon stored in coastal wetlands, which comprises the major part of oceanic "blue carbon," is a subject of growing interest and concern. In this study, organic carbon storage in coastal wetlands and its economic value were estimated using the raw data of 25 studies related to soil carbon storage. Data were collected from three tidal flats (one protected and two developed areas) and two estuarine salt marshes (one protected and one restored area). Bulk density, soil organic matter content, and standing biomass of vegetation were all considered, with Monte Carlo simulation applied to estimate the uncertainty. Results: Mean carbon storage in two salt marshes ranged between 14.6 and $25.5kg\;C\;m^{-2}$. Mean carbon storage in tidal flats ranged from 18.2 to $28.6kg\;C\;m^{-2}$, with variability possibly related to soil texture. The economic value of stored carbon was estimated by comparison with the price of carbon in the emission trading market. The value of US $ $6600\;ha^{-1}$ is ~ 45% of previously estimated ecosystem services from fishery production and water purification functions in coastal areas. Conclusions: Although our study sites do not cover all types of large marine ecosystem, this study highlights the substantial contribution of coastal wetlands as carbon sinks and the importance of conserving these habitats to maximize their ecosystem services.

  • We have estimated the vertical column density (VCD) of formaldehyde (HCHO) on a global scale using a multiple linear regression method (MRM) with Ozone Monitoring Instrument (OMI) and Moderate-Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) data. HCHO VCDs were estimated in regions of biogenic, pyrogenic, and anthropogenic emissions using independent variables, including $NO_2$ VCD, land surface temperature (LST), an enhanced vegetation index (EVI), and the mean fire radiative power (MFRP), which are strongly correlated with HCHO. To evaluate the HCHO estimates obtained using the MRM, we compared estimates of HCHO VCD data measured by OMI ($HCHO_{OMI}$) with those estimated by multiple linear regression equations (MRE) ($HCHO_{MRE}$). Good MRM performances were found, having the average statistical values (R = 0.91, slope = 1.03, mean bias = $-0.12{\times}10^{15}molecules\;cm^{-2}$, percent difference = 11.27%) between $HCHO_{MRE}$ and $HCHO_{OMI}$ in our study regions where high HCHO levels are present. Our results demonstrate that the MRM can be a useful tool for estimating atmospheric HCHO levels.

  • Background: Ambrosia trifida is a highly invasive annual plant, but effective control methods have not been proposed. Among various eradication methods, cutting is a simple measure to control invasive plants, and sowing seeds of native plants may effectively increase biotic resistance to invasion. In this study, we conducted a field experiment with two treatments: cutting and sowing seeds of six native or naturalized plants. Results: We found a significantly lower A. trifida abundance after cutting than in the control (77% decrease). Sowing seeds of native species did not provide any additional benefit for the control of A. trifida, but increased the importance values and diversity of other native vegetation. The abundance of A. trifida was negatively correlated with that of other plant taxa based on plant cover, biomass, and density. However, biotic resistance of sown plants was not effective to control invasion because A. trifida was so competitive. Conclusions: We concluded that cutting is an effective measure to control Ambrosia trifida while sowing seeds of native plants can increase native plant diversity.

  • This paper analyzes data on the plant species diversity and their contribution to the livelihoods of rural people in five villages of Domar upazila, Nilphamari district, Bangladesh. Assessment was done by means of multistage random sampling. Information collected from a total of 40 households ranging from small, medium and large categories. A total of 52 plant species belonging to 34 families were identified as being important to local livelihoods. Fruits (37%), timber (23%) and medicinal (17%) species were the most important plant use categories. Determination of the relative density of the different species revealed that Areca catechu constitutes 19.17% of homestead vegetation of the area followed by Artocarpus heterophyllus, which occupies 10.34%. Margalef index showed that there is no major difference (5.11 for large, 5.49 for medium, 4.73 for small) across the different size classes and Shannon-Weiner Index of the study area varies from 2.75 to 2.98. Results show that the average annual homestead income varied from US$108.69 to US$291.67 and contribute 6.63% of the household income.
