Investigation of Internal Flow Fields of Evaporating of Binary Mixture Droplets (증발하는 이성분혼합물 액적의 유동장 해석)

  • If a liquid droplet evaporates on a solid substrate, when it completely dries, it leaves a peculiar pattern, which depends on the composition of the liquid. Not only a single component liquid but also complex liquids are studied for a different purpose. In particular, a binary mixture droplet has been widely studied and used for an ink-jet printing technology. In this study, we focus on investigating to visualize the internal flow field of an ethanol-water mixture by varying a concentration ratio between two liquids. We measure the in-plane velocity vector fields and vorticities. We believe that this fundamental study about the internal flow field provides a basic idea to understand the dried pattern of the binary mixture droplet.

Sequence driven features for prediction of subcellular localization of proteins

  • Predicting the cellular location of an unknown protein gives a valuable information for inferring the possible function of the protein. For more accurate prediction system, we need a good feature extraction method that transforms the raw sequence data into the numerical feature vector, minimizing information loss. In this paper, we propose new methods of extracting underlying features only from the sequence data by computing pairwise sequence alignment scores. In addition, we use composition based features to improve prediction accuracy. To construct an SVM ensemble from separately trained SVM classifiers, we propose specificity based weighted majority voting. The overall prediction accuracy evaluated by the 5-fold cross-validation reached 88.53% for the eukaryotic animal data set. By comparing the prediction accuracy of various feature extraction methods, we could get the biological insight on the location of targeting information. Our numerical experiments confirm that our new feature extraction methods are very useful for predicting subcellular localization of proteins.

  • The delta sleep-inducing peptides (DSIP, Trp-Ala-Gly-Gly-Asp-Ala-Ser-Gly-Glu) is an important regulatory hormone, controlling hypothalamus and pituitary functions. In the current study, an expression system was designed for the rapid and economic expression oi recombinant DSIP for biophysical studies. Artificially synthesized oligonucleotides encoding DSIP were cloned into a pGEX-KG vector and expressed in E. coli (BL21). The recombinant GST-DSIP was then readily purified using a GST affinity column. To obtain intact DSIP from the GST-DSIP, thrombin cleavage and a CNBr reaction were successively carried out. The DSIP in the CNBr reaction mixture was subjected to RP-HPLC purification to yield 1.2 mg DSIP from a 1 liter culture of E. coli. Identification of the DSIP was peformed using MALDI-MS and an amino acid composition analysis.

  • Tension members is a type of effective structural member, which is often used in large span structures. The structure systems composed with tension members are combined in various way and specific formations. So, there are need to research into the formations of tension structure and the type of adaptation in tension structure architectures. The structure systems with tension members were considered as tension main system, vector system and tension supported bending system, comprehensively. And tension structures were classified into the formation of tension structure with uniaxial or multiaxial line tension member, with surface member, with hybrid member of line and surface, concerning the flow of tension force. In each the formation of tension structure, the typical adaptations to architecture were also investigated through architecture examples. The type of the formation can be used to plan an architecture with respect to the flow of tension force and structural feature.

  • A new method is proposed for the design of the dichroic mirrors in 3-LCD projection systems for color separation/composition. Rather than simply basing the color performance cirterion on luminance or chromatic saturation only, the optimum design parameters can be found by maximizing the volume of the perceived color gamut in RLAB color space and related color appearance model and used the linearly approximated spectrum of dichroic mirrors for simplicity and vector space description. By this method, we found optimal half-power wavelengths in dichroic mirrors which maximized our performance criterion.

  • 비디오 트랜스코딩을 수행할 때 트랜스코더에서 움직임 벡터를 새로 추출하는 과정은 많은 계산 처리량이 요구된다. 그러므로 실시간으로 비디오스트림을 트랜스코딩하기에는 문제점이 발생한다. 비디오 트랜스코더는 계산복잡도를 감소시키기 위해서 트랜스코더의 인코더부분에서 추출된 움직임 벡터를 트랜스코더의 디로더 부분으로 바로 전송하는 기법을 이용하고 있다. 이러한 기법은 비디오 화질저하를 발생시키므로, 해결책으로 기존의 움직임 벡터를 트랜스코더에서 탐색영역을 작게 하여 정재하는 기법에 관한 연구가 있었다. 본 논문에서는 프레임을 감소시키기 위한 트랜스코딩을 수행할 때 움직임벡터를 구성하는 방법에 대해서 기존의 연구들과 비교하여 개선된 알고리즘을 제안한다. 제안한 알고리즘은 매크로블록이 차지하고 있는 각각의 블록에 대해서 가중치를 적용한다.

Analysis of Airflows in a Room with Panoramic PIV (파노라마-PIV를 이용한 실내기류 해석)

  • A panoramic-PIV system has been constructed for the analysis of the airflows in a room. Smoke is used as seeding particles and are visualized by a pulsed laser (Nd-Yag, 120 mJ). Panoramic images have been obtained by an image composition process using the two images obtained by the two cameras $(1k\times1k)$ that are viewing the wide measurement areas. Velocity vector fields have been obtained by the grey-level cross-correlation PIV method. Three room models $(L{\times}W{\times}H[mm^3],\;500\times500\times250,\;350\times350\times175,\;250\times250\times125)$ have been tested. The experimental results have proven that the constructed panoramic-PIV system can be used as a useful tool for analyzing the airflow characteristics in the room models.

  • 여러 응용 서비스를 유 무선을 포함한 다양한 네트웍을 통해 제공하기 위해서는 네트웍에 적응할 수 있는 서비스 형태가 요구된다. 그 가운데 멀티미디어 서비스의 경우 네트웍이 서로 다른 환경에 적응할 수 있는 해결책으로 트랜스코딩 기술이 제시되었다. 하지만, 트랜스코딩을 위해 필요한 복호 부호의 처리 과정은 실시간으로 제공되는 멀티미디어 스트리밍의 경우에 제약조건으로 작용하고, 이에 따른 처리 과정을 대폭 줄이는 일부 기술들은 사용자 측의 서비스 품질에 문제점을 안고 있다. 본 논문에서는 트랜스코딩을 통한 처리 과정과 사용자 측 서비스 품질의 두 가지 측면을 고려하는 frame dropping 시의 모션 벡터 합성 기법에 대해서 언급한다. 또한, 본 논문에서는 기존의 기법과는 달리 양방향 예측 프레임이 포함된 경우에도 적용할 수 있는 확장성을 제공한다.

Malaria Vector Surveillance in Ganghwa-do, a Malaria-Endemic Area in the Republic of Korea

  • We investigated the seasonality of Anopheles mosquitoes, including its species composition, density, parity, and population densities of mosquitoes infected with the parasite in Ganghwa-do (Island), a vivax malaria endemic area in the Republic of Korea. Mosquitoes were collected periodically with a dry-ice-tent trap and a blacklight trap during the mosquito season (April-October) in 2008. Anopheles sinensis (94.9%) was the most abundant species collected, followed by Anopheles belenrae (3.8%), Anopheles pullus (1.2%), and Anopheles lesteri (0.1%). Hibernating Anopheles mosquitoes were also collected from December 2007 to March 2008. An. pullus (72.1%) was the most frequently collected, followed by An. sinensis (18.4%) and An. belenrae (9.5%). The composition of Anopheles species differed between the mosquito season and hibernation seasons. The parous rate fluctuated from 0% to 92.9%, and the highest rate was recorded on 10 September 2008. Sporozoite infections were detected by PCR in the head and thorax of female Anopheles mosquitoes. The annual sporozoite rate of mosquitoes was 0.11% (2 of 1,845 mosquitoes). The 2 mosquitoes that tested positive for sporozoites were An. sinensis. Malarial infections in anopheline mosquitoes from a population pool were also tried irrespective of the mosquito species. Nine of 2,331 pools of Anopheles mosquitoes were positive. From our study, it can be concluded that An. sinensis, which was the predominant vector species and confirmed as sporozoite-infected, plays an important role in malaria transmission in Ganghwa-do.

Cloning and Characterization of a Bile Salt Hydrolase from Enterococcus faecalis Strain Isolated from Healthy Elderly Volunteers (사람 분변에서 분리한 Enterococcusfaecalis가 생성하는 BileSaltHydrolase의 특징)

  • Bile salt hydrolase (BSH, EC 3.5.1.24) activity, which cleaves amide bond between carboxyl group (bile acid) and amino group (glycine or taurine), is commonly detected in gut-associated species of human and animal. During the screening of BSH active strains from the fecal samples of elderly human volunteers, strain CU30-2 was isolated on the basis of the highly active BSH producing activity. A bsh gene of the isolate was cloned into the pET22b expression vector and overexpressed in Escherichia coli BL21 (DE3) Gold by induction with 1mM IPTG. The overexpressed BSH enzyme with 6x His-tag was purified with apparent homogeneity using a $Ni^+$-NTA agarose column and characterized. The BSH enzyme of E. faecalis CU30-2 exhibited approximately 50 times higher activity against glycol-conjugated bile salts than tauro-conjugated bile salts having the highest activity against glycocholic acid. Considering the prevalence of E. faecalis strains in the human GI tract and glycol-conjugates dominated bile acid composition of human bile, further study is needed to investigate the impact of the BSH activity exerted by E. faecalis strains to the host as well as to the BSH producing strains.
