Morphological and Anatomical Evaluation of Grafted Pinus merkusii

  • Morphological and anatomical evaluation of grafted P. merkusii have been undertaken to obtain the information about compatible and incompatible symptoms of 18 years old grafts based on morphological observation and microscopic analysis. Samples of compatible and incompatible grafts were obtained from previous research conducted by the Silviculture Departement Team in 1994. Result showed that compatible grafts have normal stem form and secondary growth (diameter growth), but some abnormality symptoms like undulated pattern of annual growth rings, phloem thickening and abnormality resin ducts in inner and middle parts of the union area occurred. Incompatible ones showed abnormality of the stem form, cortex-bark necrosis and swelling in the union area. Microscopic observation showed abnormality of all parts of the union, undulated pattern of annual growth rings, phloem thickening, abnormal resin ducts, low numbers and discontinuity of vascular elements in the union area.

Pharmacognostical Studies on Ginseng Folium (인삼잎의 생약학적 연구)

  • Ginseng Folium has been used to cure acute gastritis, alcoholism and anemia. The morphological and anatomical characteristics of the leaf and stem of Panax ginseng C.A. Meyer cultivated in Korea for 1 to 6 years are described. It is found that the vessels increase in number and diameter, and also the vascular bundles increase in number, as the plant becomes old. The result showed that the commercial &In Sam Ip& samples on the markets of Pusan, Kumsan, Taegu and Seoul have been derived from the leaf and stem of 4 to 6 years old P. ginseng plants, most of them being 5-6 years old.

Comprehensive understanding of atrial septal defects by imaging studies for successful transcatheter closure

  • Transcatheter closure of atrial septal defects has become a popular procedure. The availability of a preprocedural imaging study is crucial for a safe and successful closure. Both the anatomy and morphology of the defect should be precisely evaluated before the procedure. Three-dimensional (3D) echocardiography and cardiac computed tomography are helpful for understanding the morphology of a defect, which is important because different defect morphologies could variously impact the results. During the procedure, real-time 3D echocardiography can be used to guide an accurate closure. The safety and efficiency of transcatheter closures of atrial septal defects could be improved through the use of detailed imaging studies.

A Case of Cerebral Aneurysmal Subarachnoid Hemorrhage in Fabry's Disease

  • We report an unusual case of cerebral aneurysmal subarachnoid hemorrage (SAH) with Fabry's disease. A 42-year-old woman presented with aneurysmal SAH originated from a saccular aneurysm of the right posterior communicating artery. The patient was treated by an endovascular coil embolization of aneurysm. Postoperatively the patient recovered favorably without any neurological deficit. During her admission, the patient had a sign of proteinuria in urine analysis. The pathologic findings of kidney needle biopsy implied nephrosialidosis (mucolipidosis of lysosomal stroage disease), which is consistent with a Fabry's disease. It is uncommon that Fabry's disease is presented with aneurysmal SAH, especially in middle-aged patients, but could be a clinical concern. Further investigations are needed to reveal risk factors, vascular anatomy, and causative mechanisms of Fabry's disease with aneurysmal SAH.

Ontogeny of the Fascicular Cambium in the Hypocotyl of Ricinus communis L. (피마자의 하배축에 있어서 유관속내 형성층의 초기발생)

  • Developmental anatomy was conducted in order to elucidate the differentiating pattern of fascicular cambial initials in the hypocotyl of Ricinus communis. The homogeneous procambium with relatively short cells in early stage is transformed into a heterogeneous structure with long and short cells in late stage in tangential view. Fusiform and ray initials are gradually originated from the long and short cells of the procambium in hypocotyl in later stage respectively. Fusiform initials are not shorter than procambial cells because of the successive elongation of vascular meristematic cells. Therefore, the distinction between procambium and fascicular cambium is not made from comparison with their cell length. The characteristics of the fascicular cambium are gradully acquired at or just after completion of hypocotyl elongation.

  • The sternocleidomastoid (SCM) artery supplying blood to the SCM muscle has different origins according to its anatomical segment. The authors performed cadaveric neck dissection to review the surgical anatomy of neurovascular structures surrounding the carotid artery in the neck. During the dissection, an unusual finding was cited in which the SCM artery supplying the middle part of the SCM muscle originated from the lingual artery (LA); it was also noted that it crossed over the hypoglossal nerve (HN). There have been extremely rare reports citing the SCM artery originated from the LA. Though the elevation of the HN over the internal carotid artery was relatively high, the vascular loop crossing over the HN was very close to the carotid bifurcation. Special anatomical consideration is required to avoid the injury of the HN during carotid artery surgery.

  • The size variation of the cambial initials and their derivatives, in relation to the increase of girth, in the intact and decapitated stem of Populus euramericana was anatomically studied. In the typical nonstoried cambium of P. euramericana, the cell size of fusiform initials, vessel member, and sieve tube member were gradually increased and thus it reached a maximal state. In the intact plants, the size of the cambial initials and their derivatives was larger then in the decapitated ones. On the other hand, the frequency of anticlinal division of the cambial cells, the rate of the elongation and loss of the daughter initials in the intact plants was higher than in the decapitated ones. The cambium of the intact plants had higher ray compared with that of the decapitated ones. It was interpreted that these results were caused by the decapitation, which could block the supply of certain substances for cell growth such as hormones and metabolites.

  • For the successful guided bone regeneration(GBR) of maxillary bony defect, proper soft tissue coverage is one of the most important things. Soft tissue dehiscence can be most common reason of osseous reconstruction failure. If a vascular supply to the graft should not develop from the host tissue, then the graft may also foil. Both of these prerequisites can be aided by judicious use of the buccal fat pad(BFP). Many methods for adequate soft tissue coverage have been proposed and the use of the BFP is one of them. BFP is useful in posterior maxillary area, can cover larger area and have higher blood flow than other methods. so the use of the BFP may offer protection and early blood supply to maxillary bone graft. This report describes the history, anatomy, blood flow, and clinical usefulness with two clinical cases.

  • Anatomical characters of the secondary xylem in roots of Lauraceae, including 6 genera and 13 species grown in Korea, were studied systematically. Lauraceors members studied anatomically possess characters of the secondary xylem that are in the main more specialized than those found in the primitive angiosperm families. The specialized characters are as follows; (1) mostly solitary pores with some radially multiples, (2) mostly simple perforation plates and partially scalariform perforation plates in all species, (3) slightly oblique end wall of vessel element, (4) predominantly alternate intervascular pitting, (5) paratracheal axial parenchyma in all species, (6) heterogeneous II or III vascular rays.   • Tissue defect reconstruction using radial forearm free flap (RFFF) is a common surgical technique whose success or failure is mainly dependent on venous drainage. RFFF has two major venous outflow systems, superficial and deep vein. Drainage methods include combining both systems or using one alone. This review aims to recapitulate the vascular anatomy and network of RFFF as well as shed light on deep vein as a reliable venous drainage system. We also discuss basic evidence for and advantages of single microanastomosis with coalesced vein to overcome technical difficulties associated with the deep vein system.
