  • The new geometric disturbance is proposed to control the flow around the bluff body. The new geometry is characterized by the variable pitch which is applied on the Helically Elliptic Twisted (HET) cylinder. The performance of the HTE geometry as a biomimetic passive flow control was confirmed by Jung and Yoon (2014). The Large Eddy Simulation (LES) is used for the evaluation of the flow control performance of the Variable Pitch HTE (VPHTE) cylinder at Reynolds number (Re) of 3000 corresponding to the subcritical regime. The circular and HTE cylinders are also considered to compare the performance of the VPHTE cylinder at the same Re. The VPHTE cylinder gives the smallest values of the force coefficients than the circular and HTE cylinders. The drag and lift coefficients of the VPHTE cylinder are about 15.2% and 94.0% lower than those of the circular cylinder, respectively. Especially, the VPHTE cylinder achieves about 2.3% and 30.0% reduction of the drag coefficient and the root mean square of the lift coefficient than the HTE cylinder, respectively. Furthermore, The VPHTE cylinder forms more elongated and stabilized separated shear layer than the circular cylinder, which supports the reduction of the force coefficients.

  • Even though the variable pitch control of a wind turbine blade is known as an effective component for power control over the rated wind speed, it has limited applicability to small wind turbines because of its relatively high cost on the price of small wind turbine. Instead, stall control is generally applied in the blade design without any additional cost. However, stall delay can frequently be caused by high turbulence around the turbine blade, and it can produce control failures through excessive rotational speed and overpowering the electrical generator. Therefore, a passive pitch control module should be considered, where the pitch moves with the aerodynamic forces of the blade and returns by the elastic restoring force. In this study, a method to calculate the pitch moment, torque, and thrust based on the lift and drag of the rotating blade wing was demonstrated, and several effective wing shapes were reviewed based on these forces. Their characteristics will be estimated with variable wind speed and be utilized as basic data for the design of the passive pitch control module.

  • This paper presents the efficiency of a floating vertical axis wind turbine with variable-pitch. A model was designed to use the lift force and drag force for blades with various pitch angles. The blade's pitch angle is controlled by the stopper. To validate the efficiency of the wind turbine discussed in this paper, a model test was carried out through a single model efficiency experiment and wave tank experiment. The parameters of the single model efficiency experiment were the wind speed, electronic load, and pitch angle. The wave tank experiment was performed using the most efficient pitch angle from the results of the single model efficiency experiment. According to the results of the wave tank experiment, the surge and pitch motion of a structure slightly affect the efficiency of a wind turbine, but the heave motion has a large effect because the heights of the wind turbine and wind generator are almost the same.

  • This study examined the aerodynamic functions (mean airflow rate MFR, subglottal pressure Psub) and closed quotients (CQs) in the fixed pitch (C3, E3, G3, C4) with the variable loudness (70 and 80 dB) as well as in the fixed loudness at 70 dB and 80 dB with the variable pitch (C3, E3, G3, C4) in five classic male singers (Baritone). Results showed that MFR significantly increased at C3, E3, and G3 and Psub significantly increased at C4 when the loudness increased from 70 to 80 dB. At 70 dB, MFR and Psub significantly increased and CQ significantly decreased when the pitch increased from C3 to C4. At 80 dB, MFR significantly decreased when the pitch increased from C3 to G3. However, Psub showed the significant decrease with the pitch increased at 80 dB. In conclusion, as the loudness increases, the aerodynamic loss is getting higher and vocal efficiency becomes lower at low pitch than at higher pitch. At a low loudness level, the main mechanism to control loudness is the amount of medial compression of the vocal folds rather than the aerodynamic function. In addition, the aerodynamic function and medial compression of the vocal folds have a significant role in increasing the loudness level.

  • This paper addresses linear quadratic regulation (LQR) for variable speed variable pitch wind turbines. Because of the inherent nonlinearity of wind turbines, a set of operating conditions is identified and then a LQR controller is designed for each of the operating points. The feedback controller gains are then interpolated linearly to get a control law for the entire operating region. In addition, the aerodynamic torque and effective wind speed are estimated online to get the gain-scheduling variable for implementing the controller. The potential of this method is verified through simulation with the help of MATLAB/Simulink and GH Bladed. The performance and mechanical load when using LQR are also compared with those obtained when using a PI controller.

  • 5MW wind turbine is regarded as a promising system for offshore wind farms in the western sea of Korean. And the wind turbine is developed in many companies but not much information is known about it. In this study, aerodynamics and control characteristics depending on several control methods is reviewed on 5MW wind turbine, in which configuration data of the turbine are used from the previous study of NREL. For the calculations, GH_Bladed, which is certificated software by GL, is used and compared with data from FAST code of NREL. This study shows that how much power production, and aerodynamic performances and loads can be obtained with different controls in the operation of 5MW wind turbine, which is expected to be useful in the design of the wind turbine system.

  • This paper introduces a methodology for NREL 5MW wind turbine, which is the variable speed and variable pitch(VSVP) control system. This control strategy maximizes the power extraction capability from the wind in the low wind speed region and regulates the wind turbine power as the rated one for the high wind speed region. Also, pitch control efficiency is raised by using pitch scheduling.Torque schedule is made of torque table depending on the rotor speed. Torque control is used for vertical region in a torque-rotor speed chart. In addition to these, mechanical loads reduction using a drive train damper and exclusion zone on a torque schedule is tried. The NREL 5MW wind turbine control strategy is comprised by the generator torque and blade pitch control. Finally, proposed control system is verified through GH Bladed simulation.
