The cool-down performance after soaking is very important in an automotive air-conditioning system and is considered as the key design variable. Therefore, understanding of the overall transient characteristics of the system is essential to the preliminary design as well as steady-state characteristics. The objective of this study is to develop a computer simulation model and estimate theoretical1y the transient performance of an automotive air-conditioning system. To accomplish this, a mathematical modelling of each component, such as compressor, condenser, expansion valve, and evaporator, is presented first of all. For a detailed calculation, condenser and evaporator are divided into many subsections. Each sub-section is an elemental volume for modelling. In models of expansion valve and compressor, dynamic behaviors are not considered in an attempt to simplify the ana1ysis, but the quasi-static ones are just considered, such as the relation between mass flow rate and pressure drop in expansion device, polytropic process in compressor, etc. The developed simulation model is validated with a comparison to laboratory test data of an automotive air-conditioning system. The overall time-tracing properties of each component agreed fairly well wish those of test data in this case.

In this study, the performance of mobile air conditioner(MAC) systems to which the refrigerants R134a and R1234yf were used was evaluated to compare the characteristic of automotive refrigeration cycles with refrigerant. The experimental setup of a MAC consists of an belt driven compressor, a condenser, an evaporator and a block type thermal expansion valve. The drop-in test on MAC were carried out under variable compressor speed from 800 to 2500 rpm. Performance test by using R1234yf and R134a in the same system revealed low the charge amount and mass flow rates for using R1234yf, that is, up to 10% and 17%, respectively. The compressor discharge temperature of R1234yf is $8^{\circ}C$ lower than that of R134a. The cooling capacity with R1234yf system decreased by 4~7% compared with R134a system. In addition, The COP of R1234yf system is lower 3~4% than that of R134a system.

MDO Optimization for a low pressure axial compressor rotor has been carried out to improve aerodynamic performance and structural stability. Global optimized solution was obtained from an artificial neural network model with genetic algorithm. Optimized rotor model has a high blade loading near hub and near zero incidence flow angle near tip region to reduce the incidence loss and flow separation at trailing edge region. Also the rotor shape is converged to a trapezoid shape to reduce the maximum stress occurred at the root of the blade. Numerical simulation results show that rotor has 87.6% rotor efficiency and safety factor over than 3.
An expansion device plays an important role in optimizing the heat pumps by controlling refrigerant flow and balancing the system pressures. Conventional expansion devices are being gradually replaced with electronic expansion valves due to increasing focus on comfort, energy conservation, and application of a variable speed compressor. In addition, the amount of refrigerant charge in a heat pump is another primary parameter influencing system performance. In this study, the flow characteristics of the expansion devices are analyzed, and the effects of refrigerant charge amount on the performance of the heat pump and the variation of compressor speed are investigated at various operating conditions. Mass flow rate through capillary tube, short tube orifice, and EEV was strongly dependent on the upstream pressure and subcooling. The heat pump system is very sensitive with a variation of refrigerant charge amount. The performance of it can be optimized by adjusting the flow rate through expansion device to maintain a constant superheat at all test conditions.
As the importance of low power design is emphasized, power consumption became one of the standards that represent the performance of the system. The purpose of this study is to decide design variable that minimize power consumption for the oxygen concentrator in two bed-one compressor 8 step PSA process that has above 90% purity at 3lpm by using given constants and selected parameters. Setting selected parameters as cycle time and equalization time, optimization for PSA process in the oxygen concentrator is progressed. For this, we need to know the features and basic principals of PSA process and to deduce objective function of performance analysis. Validations for objective function and lots of experiments are needed too. By using the characteristic curve of the compressor and the pressure curve of the process for 1 cycle, objective function was set. After theoretical 2 dimensional optimized paths was obtained. And then, by experiment, theoretical optimized path was verified.
Rarefied gas flows through two-dimensional micro channels are studied numerically for the performance optimization of a nanomembrane-based Knudsen compressor. The effects of the wall temperature distributions on the thermal transpiration flow patterns are examined. The flow has a pumping effect, and the mass flow rates through the channel are calculated. The results show that a steady one-way flow is induced for a wide range of the Knudsen number. The DSMC(direct simulation Monte Carlo) method with VHS(variable hard sphere) model and NTC(no time counter) techniques has been applied in this work to obtain numerical solutions.

In this work, a modified stage-stacking method for the performance prediction of multi-stage axial flow compressors is proposed. The method is based on a simultaneous calculation of all interstage variables (temperature, pressure, flow velocity) instead of the conventional sequential stage-by-stage scheme. The method is also very useful in simulating the effect of changing angles of the inlet guide vane and stator vanes on the compressor operating characteristics. Generalized stage performance curves are used in presenting the performance characteristics of each stage. General assumptions enable determination of flow path data and stage design performance. Performance of various real compressors is predicted and comparison between prediction and field data validates the usefulness of the present method.
This paper deals with an empirical model for decoupling control to control the refrigeration system effectively. The conventional control schemes of the system are mainly focused on representative two control methods, superheat control and capacity control. The capacity control is basically conducted to respond partial loading conditions on the purpose of energy saving. The superheat control is mainly carried out to maintain maximum coefficient of performance (COP). In the variable speed refrigeration system, the capacity and the superheat are controlled by inverters and electronic expansion valves respectively for saving energy and improving cost performance. The capacity and superheat can not be controlled independently because of interfering loop when the compressor speed and opening angle electronic expansion valve is varied. Therefore, we suggest decoupling model to eliminate the interfering loop at first. Next, each transfer function in decoupling control model is obtained from number of experiments.

Surge phenomenon can be occurred in a compressor when the performance of turbofan engine for an aircraft is changed considerably such as take-off phase. This study is aimed to avoid surge phenomenon. This paper propose the PID and Fuzzy control System for the turbofan engine with control inputs, the VIGV(Variable Inlet Guide Vane) in closed loop, and the fuel mass flow in open loop. We design the Dynamic modeling, NPSS S-function, which is connection block of simulink between NPSS(Engine analysis program) and Simulink. Finally, we certify the performance to prevent a serge phenomenon in the VIGV control system using the both methods, PID and fuzzy.
An inverter scroll compressor is used for the air conditioning in cars. Scrolls would be changed from the aluminum material to the magnesium material in order to satisfy the light weight trends of cars. The material changing influences on the scroll dimensions particularly the gap between two scrolls. Since the larger gap declines the performance of the compression, the gap between wraps of scrolls or the gap between wraps of scrolls to the plate of the opposite scroll is regarded as an important design variable. This paper is focused on the effects of the thermal stress due to the materials changing. The temperature difference between the inlet and the outlet is about 60 degrees and the highest operating temperature in the compressor is less than 110 degrees. The level of thermal stresses in the magnesium scroll is less than the result from aluminum one. The trend of the deformation is revealed that the normal directional deformation is 2 times lager than the in-plane directional deformation. Therefore the gap between the top of the wrap to the plate of the opposite scroll become more important than the other gaps. The orbiting scroll deforms larger than the fixed scroll by the thermal stresses. The deformation of the magnesium scroll is about 10% lager than that of the aluminum scroll. This value is similar to the ratio of the coefficients of thermal expansion of two materials. At the initial design stage, the results give many useful guides to engineers to propose gaps between parts.
