  • In this paper, we suggest the high efficient control method based on general PI control law for a variable speed refrigeration system. In the variable speed refrigeration system, the capacity and the superheat are mainly controlled by an inverter and an electronic expansion valve, respectively, for saving energy and improving coefficient of performance. Thus, we proposed a decoupling model to eliminate the interfering loop between the capacity and superheat at first. Next, we designed PI controller to control the capacity and superheat independently and simultaneously. Finally, the control performance was investigated through some experiments. The experimental results showed that the proposed PI controller based on the decoupling model can obtain good control performance under the various control references and thermal load.

  • This paper deals with fuzzy control with a feedforward compensator to progress both energy saving and coefficient of performance (COP) in a variable speed refrigeration system. Both the capacity and superheat are controlled simultaneously and independently in the system. By adopting the fuzzy theory, the controller design for the capacity and superheat is possible without depending on a dynamic model of the system. Moreover, the feedforward compensator of the superheat can reduce influence of the interfering loop between the capacity and superheat. Some experiments are conducted to design appropriate fuzzy controller by an iteration manner. The results show that the proposed fuzzy controller with the compensator can establish good control performances for the complicated refrigeration system in spite of its inherent strong non-linearity. Also, the fuzzy control performances were investigated by comparing to the model based PI control experimental results to evaluate transient behavior under the control.

  • This paper deals with an empirical model for decoupling control to control the refrigeration system effectively. The conventional control schemes of the system are mainly focused on representative two control methods, superheat control and capacity control. The capacity control is basically conducted to respond partial loading conditions on the purpose of energy saving. The superheat control is mainly carried out to maintain maximum coefficient of performance (COP). In the variable speed refrigeration system, the capacity and the superheat are controlled by inverters and electronic expansion valves respectively for saving energy and improving cost performance. The capacity and superheat can not be controlled independently because of interfering loop when the compressor speed and opening angle electronic expansion valve is varied. Therefore, we suggest decoupling model to eliminate the interfering loop at first. Next, each transfer function in decoupling control model is obtained from number of experiments.

  • In this paper, we suggest PI control with a predictive controller to progress both energy saving and coefficient of performance(COP) in a variable speed refrigeration system. The capacity and superheat are controlled simultaneously and independently by an inverter and an electronic expansion valve respectively for saving energy and improving COP in the system. The refrigeration system has long dead time in superheat inherently. The dead time makes the system difficult to achieve the satisfactory quick control response, especially superheat control response. In order to solve this problem, we designed a predictive controller based on PI control to progress superheat control performance. The control performance was investigated through some experiments to verify the effectiveness of the predictive controller.

  • In this paper, we suggest PI control with the Smith predictive controller to improve transient response of a variable speed refrigeration system (VSRS). As the refrigeration system has long dead time inherently, it is difficult to get fast responses of super-heat and reference temperature. We incorporated the Smith predictive controller into PI to compensate the effect of the long dead time of the system. At first, we introduced the decoupling model of the system to control capacity and superheat simultaneously and independently. Next, we designed the predictive controller of the superheat based on PI control law. Finally, the control performance by the proposed method was investigated through some numerical simulations and experiments. The results of the simulations and experiments showed that the proposed PI control with the predictive controller could obtain acceptable transient behaviour for the system.

  • An experimental study has been peformed to develop a scheme for fault detection and diagnosis(FDD) in a vapor compression refrigeration system. This study is to analyze fault effect on the system performance and to find efficient diagnosis rules for easy determination of abnormal system operation. The refrigeration system was operated with a variable speed compressor to modulate cooling capacity. The FDD system was designed to consider transient load conditions. Four major faults were considered, and each fault was detected over wide operating load range by separating the system response to the load change. Rule-based method was used to diagnose and classify the system faults. From the experimental results, COP degradation due to the faults in a variable speed system is severer than that in a constant speed system. The method developed in this study can be used in the fault detection of refrigeration systems with a variable speed compressor.

  • Experiments on the performance of refrigeration system using alternatives to R12 are carried out. The condenser and the evaporator are concentric-tube heat exchangers of counter-flow type and the compressor is driven by a variable speed motor. In this study, R134a, R152a, R22/142b(50 : 50 by mass) are adopted as alternatives to R12. Tests are performed by varying the inlet and outlet temperatures of secondary fluids of evaporator and condenser under the condition of constant compressor speed, degree of superheating and degree of subcooling. Results show that R134a has refrigeration capacity close to that of R12 and requires the greatest compressor power compared with that of others. And the system using R152a shows the best performance from the viewpoint of refrigeration capacity, compressor power and coefficient of performance. R22/142b is superior to R12 in the above points.
