Ceiling cooling and heating system that consider load arrangement and space in the ceiling needs to be developed. Therefore, experimental and economic changes were done to verify the performance of compact type VAV. The test results were as follow. 1) Noise test result, measuring approximately 50.4 dB~56.6 dB (before ceiling in landfill), had a better ceiling deadline than the current measure, about a 10 dB noise reduction, so that the office baseline (40~50 dB) noise was judged to be less than test. 2) For the static pressure test result, taking out an outside hydrostatic 25 mmAq, 24.8 mmAq was measured, respectively, at the point. 3) For the life-cycle cost analysis result, the initial investment cost, maintenance replacement costs, and maintenance costs increased 0.2%, but the energy savings ratio was 19.5% while the whole life cycle savings of 40 years LCC was reduced 11.9%.

Commercial buildings account for significant portions of the total building energy in Korea, and thus, a variety of research on chiller operation has been carried out. However, most of the studies were carried out on the chiller itself, i.e., the part load ratio characteristics and the corresponding electricity energy consumption patterns were not analyzed in existing studies. In this study, the part load ratio and the operating characteristics of the vapor compression chiller were analyzed within an office building equipped with the conventional variable air volume system. As a result, significant portions of total operating hours, cooling load, and energy consumption turned out to be in the part load ratio range of 0 through 50%. Thus, energy consumption was significantly affected by the chiller COP at low part load conditions, indicating that chiller operation at the part load is an important factor in commercial buildings.

One of the methods to increase the efficiency of an engine is to expand pressures obtained from combustions equal to the pressure of atmosphere as much as possible and then convert thermal energy into mechanical energy also as much as possible. In this research, the Diesel cycle was thermodynamically interpreted to evaluate the possibility of high efficiency by converting Diesel engines to the Atkinson cycle, and general cycle features were analyzed after comparing these two cycles. In the case of fuel air the Diesel-Atkinson cycle considering intake and exhaust similar to real cycles, the value of thermal efficiency and average effective pressure increased, though their values were smaller than those of standard air amount cycle, when expansion compression ratio increased. When normal Diesel engines of which compression stroke and expansion stroke are all the same, was converted to the Atkinson cycle by changing the time of intake value close, combustion pressure reduced due to reduced expansion compression ratio and intake air amount due to decreased effective cycle volume.

An experimental study of the absorption process of water vapor into a lithium bromide solution was performed. For the purpose of developing high performance absorption chiller/hater utilizing lithium bromide solution as working fluid, it is important to improve the performance of absorber with the larger heat transfer area of the four heat exchangers. The experimental apparatus was composed of a plate type absorber which could increase the heat exchange area per unit volume to investigate more detail characteristics instead of the conventional type, that is, horizontal tube bundle type. The size of plate absorbers were made for 0.4m$\times$0.6m and the design objective of a refrigeration capacity was 1RT. In this experiment, three kinds of plate absorbers namely flat plate, dimple plate and groove plate were used. The obtained results were less than the design objective values, that is, the refrigeration capacity was about 0.3 ~0.4RT and the overall heat transfer coefficient was 500~600 kcal/$m^2$h$^{\circ}C$ at the standard conditions.
Soil moisture regulates the fate of methane ($CH_4$) in forest soil via biological and chemical processes. The instant effect of variable precipitation on $CH_4$ uptake is, however, unclear in the forest ecosystems. Here, we measured $CH_4$ flux in a temperate forest soil immediately after variable volume of water applications equivalent to 10, 20 40, and $80mm\;m^{-2}day^{-1}$ precipitation. $CH_4$ uptake was significantly higher when the water was not applied. The $CH_4$ uptake decreased significantly with increasing water application. $CH_4$ uptake was linked with air filled porosity and water filled porosity. $CH_4$ uptake response to actual precipitation intensity was in agreement with $CH_4$ uptake results in this study. $CH_4$ uptake decreased 55% at highest precipitation intensity. Since annual $CH_4$ flux is calculated with interpolation of weekly or biweekly field observations, instant effect of precipitation can mislead the interpolated annual results.

CFC-12 used in mobile air conditioning(MAC) system has been replaced by R-134a, a type of HFC refrigerant, from 1991 to 1994. R-134a has since been widely used as a refrigerant of a mobile air conditioner. However, it is one of the six main green house gases listed in Kyoto Protocol, which makes it imperative to regulate its emission and develop alternative refrigerants. In this study, the concentration of leaked R-134a was measured using VT(Variable Temperature) shed and Running loss test shed to analyze the level of air conditioner refrigerant leaked in a vehicle. According to the analysis of the concentration of R-134a leaked from a vehicle parked, annual leakage amount of R-134a was in the range of 6.46~13.28 g/yr. The figure was similar with the leakage from the mobile air conditioning system currently used. In a study using the same vehicle model, a vehicle equipped with dual evaporation system had a higher leakage rate of refrigerant than a vehicle with a single evaporation system. It appears that the added fittings and joints of the dual evaporator system led to higher leakage rate. Besides, the analysis of the change in R-134a concentration under various car speed found that more refrigerant leaked under high speed(100km/hr) and but the volume of the wind did not affect to the variation of refrigerant leakage.

The present study composed a diesel-atkinson cycle of high expansion as a method of achieving high efficiency in diesel cycle engines. It also interpreted the cycle engine thermodynamically analysis to determine the possibility of the improvement of thermal efficiency and clarified the characteristics of several factors . According to the result of theoretical analysis, heat efficiency was highest when expansion-compression ratio Reど:1. In addition. diesel engines with high apparent compression ratio had higher expansion-compression ratio than otto engines and consequently their effect of high expansion was high. which in turn enhanced thermal efficiency. When the atkinson cycle was implemented in a real diesel engine by applying the miller cycle through the variation of the closing time of the intake valve, the effective compression ratio and the quantify of intake air decreased and as a result, the effect of high expansion was not observed. Accordingly. the atkinson cycle can be implemented when the quantity of intake air is compensated by supercharge and the effective compression ratio is maintained at its initial level through the reduction of the clearance volume. In this case. heat efficiency increased by $4.1\%$ at the same expansion-compression ratio when the apparent compression ratio was 20 and the fuel cut off ratio was 2. As explained above, when the atkinson cycle was used for diesel cycle. heat efficiency was improved. In order to realize high expansion through retarding the intake value closing time, the engine needs to be equipped with variable valve timing equipment, variable compression ratio equipment and supercharged Pressure equipment. Then a diesel-atkinson cycle engine is realized.
The first purpose of this study is to verify the application of computer modelling to a enclosed space fire. The second one is to determine temperature distribution for the three different ventilation types in case of a enclosed space fire. The third one is to find out the ventilation direction and ventilation quantity to remove effectively heat and combustion products generated by a fire in variable air volume(VAV) system. Firstly, compared with experimental results of Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory(LLNL), numerical results show good agreements. Secondly, among three different ventilation types, the numerical analyses show the highest temperature distribution in occupied zone(up to 1.8 m from bottom) from firing moment to 100 sec. when supply ducts are placed in ceiling and extract duct is placed close to the bottom on side walls. This is due to disadvantageous position of extract duct in ventilating high temperature air which rise because of buoyancy force. Thirdly, this study finds out effective ventilation direction and ventilation quantity to remove heat and combustion products generated by a fire by using VAV system. $CO_2$ concentration is used as a fire fume removal index. As soon as a fire happens, ventilation direction is changed in order to gather and drive out fire fumes. In case of three times ventilation quantity of ordinary one, $CO_2$ concentration and temperature have begun to decrease at 120 sec. after firing, i.e.fire fumes have begun to be removed.

Design optimization of the heat sink with 7${\times}$7 square pin-fins is performed numerically using the Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) and the Computer Aided Optimization (CAO). In the pin-fins heat sink, the optimum design variables for fin height (h), fin width (w), and fan-to-heat sink distance (c) can be achieved when the thermal resistance ($\theta$$_{j}$) at the junction and the overall pressure drop ($\Delta$p) are minimized simultaneously. To complete the optimization, the finite volume method for calculating the objective functions, the BFGS method for solving the unconstrained non-linear optimization problem, and the weighting method for predicting the multi-objective problem are used. The results show that the optimum design variable for the weighting coefficient of 0.5 are as follows: w=4.653 mm, h=59.215 mm, and c=2.667 mm. In this case, the objective functions are predicted as 0.56K/W of thermal resistance and 6.91 Pa of pressure drop. The Pareto optimal solutions are also presented.re also presented.d.

Turbulent flow and heat transfer characteristics around staggered tube banks were studied using the 3-D Navier-Stokes equations and energy equation governing a steady incompressible flow, which were reformulated in a non-orthogonal coordinate system with cartesian velocity components and discretized by the finite volume method with a non-staggered variable arrangement. The predicted turbulent kinetic energy using RNG $k-{\varepsilon}$ model was lower than that of standard $k-{\varepsilon}$ model but showed same result for mean flow field quantities. The prediction of the skin friction coefficient using RNG $k-{\varepsilon}$ model showed better trend with experimental data than standard $k-{\varepsilon}$ model result. The inclined flow showed higher velocity and skin friction coefficient than transverse flow because of extra strain rate ($\frac{{\partial}w}{{\partial}y}$). Also, this was why the inclined flow showed higher local heat transfer coefficient than the transverse flow.
