  • A numerical solution using finite difference method to evaluate the thermal buckling of simply supported FGM plate with variable thickness is presented in this research. First, the governing differential equation of thermal stability under uniform temperature through the plate thickness is derived. Then, the governing equation has been solved using finite difference method. After validating the presented numerical method with the analytical solution, the finite difference formulation has been extended in order to include variable thickness. The accuracy of the finite difference method for variable thickness plate has been also compared with the literature where a good agreement has been found. Furthermore, a parametric study has been conducted to analyze the effect of material and geometric parameters on the thermal buckling resistance of the FGM plates. It was found that the thickness variation affects isotropic plates a bit more than FGM plates.

  • These studies were made to assess the present stage of resistance to antibiotics, incidence and transferability of R-factors against E. coli. From March to July 1987, 59 strains of E. coli were isolated from specimens of patients collected at university hospitals in Seoul, 64 strains from stools of domestic animals and 66 strains from drainages in Seoul. These specimens were tested for resistance to 12 kinds of antimicrobial agents by means of agar dilution method. Using Muller-Hinton agar for the assay of drug resistance and tryptic soy broth as propagating medium for conjugation. The strains of E. coli were found to be resistant to one or more antibiotics and were considered to be potential donors of R-plasmid. The resistant strains of E. coli isolated from patients, domestic animals and drainages were found to be 55(93%), 33(52%) and 31(47%), respectively. Resistance to Tc, Ap and Cb was the highest in those isolated from patients and drainages, and resistance to Tc, Cm and Sm was the highest in those isolated from domestic animals. In the transfer test of drug resistance by conjugation method, 17 strains (47%) isolated from patients, 15(54%) isolated from domestic animals and 15(56%) isolated from drainages showed positive results, transperable resistant plasmid molecules with variable range in each strain.

  • Selection for increased milk production in dairy cows has often resulted in a higher incidence of disease and thus incurred a greater health costs. Considerable interests have been shown in breeding dairy cattle for disease resistance in recent years. This paper discusses the limitations of breeding dairy cattle for genetic resistance in six parts: 1) complexity of disease resistance, 2) difficulty in estimating genetic parameters for planning breeding programs against disease, 3) undesirable relationship between production traits and disease, 4) disease as affected by recessive genes, 5) new mutation of the pathogens, and 6) variable environmental factors. The hidden problems of estimating genetic and phenotypic parameters involving disease incidence were examined in terms of categorical nature, non-independence, heterogeneity of error variance, non-randomness, and automatic relationship between disease and production traits. In light of these limitations, the prospect for increasing genetic resistance by conventional breeding methods would not be so bright as we like. Since the phenomenon of disease is the result of a joint interaction among host genotype, pathogen genotype and environment, it becomes essential to adopt an integrated approach of increasing genetic resistance of the host animals, manipulating the pathogen genotypes, developing effective vaccines and drugs, and improving the environmental conditions. The advances in DNA-based technology show considerable promise in directly manipulating host and pathogen genomes for genetic resistance and producing vaccines and drugs for prevention and medication to promote the wellbeing of the animals.

  • Fatigue crack propagation behavior for variable load in high strength aluminum alloys was investigated in this study. The materials used in this study are aluminum 7075-T651 and 5052-H32 alloys. Crack length was measured from calibration curve, which was plotted by known crack length and resistance of standard specimens. Load was obtained from linear regression formula. Unloading elastic compliance method was ap;ied to check the crack closure and cracked area.

  • The aim of this paper is to evaluate the connection resistance for the rigid connection, semi-rigid connection and simple connection by LRFD and ASD codes. This paper found the resistable stress for various connections with eccentricity. The paper suggested a amended connection pattern to get rid of deficits caused from the eccentricity.

  • As a new concept of resistive exercise, isokinetic exercise was developed during the late 1960's. In isokinetic exercise, the subject works at a fixed speed aganist variable and totally accommodating resistance. During isokinetic exercise the resistance accommodates the external maintains maximum output throughout the full range of motion. The maximum torque during isokinetic movements is a measure of the muscular force applied in dynamic conditions.

  • The thermomechanical coupling phenomena in the resistance welding process is complicated due to interactions of mechanical, thermal and electrical factors. Although experimental investigations of resistance spot welding have been carried out, but there are a few by computer simulation. so the purpose of this research is to decrease the time and cost much required in experimental investigation by carrying out the analysis of the resistance spot welding process through computer simulation based on the finite element method. The tool used in the computer simulation is the commercial ANSYS program package. A two dimensional axisymetric model is used to simulate the resistance spot welding for two stainless steel sheets of equal thickness and parametric study is carried out for variable welding current, workpieces of unequal thickness and dissimilar materials. The results from the computer simulation are in good agreement with the experimental one. Through these results, such items as stress distribution, temperature profiles, thermal expansion and weld nugget formation are predicted. Reliability and applicability of finite element models have been demonstrated to simulate and to analyze the resistance spot welding process.

  • Etiological components of the rice cultivars possessing durable resistance to rice blast were evaluated. In the greenhouse test by artificial inoculation, number of leaf blast lesion in Dongjinbyeo was not increased by any race of the pathogen, while the lesion number on the resistant cultivar Palgongbyeo and susceptible cultivar Jinmibyeo was increased rapidly. Size of the lesion in Dongjinbyeo was smaller and progressed more slowly than the resistant cultivar Palgongbyeo until 11 days after inoculation. Latent period in Dongjinbyeo was intermediate. However, the period was significantly variable depending upon the races. Least amount of conidia was produced in Dongjinbyeo by race KJ-107 and the number of conidia was decreased rapidly from 11 days after inoculation.

  • It was examined that the relationship between microstructures, electrical properties and crystal structure of (1-x)CaMnO$_3$-xCaTiO$_3$solid solution system which was made by mixing a semiconducting material CaMnO$_3$of low resistance and a dielectric material CaTiO$_3$of high resistance with variable ratios (x=0, 0.1, 0.3, 0.5, 0.7, 0.9, 1.0). As the CaTiO$_3$increased, the resistance, B constant and lattice constant were increased, but the grain size was decreased. On particular, above 50wt% of CaTiO$_3$, the resistance at 2 5$^{\circ}C$ was rapidly increased due to the correlation in connectivity of the lattices between the conductive Mn$^{+4}$ octahedron and the insulative Ti$^{+4}$ octahedron.ron.

  • 3phase induction motor consumes 40% of national electric power. so It is one of the most important electric device for the national power policy. The efficiency measurement is carried out by IEC standards. After the temperature rise test, It's difficult to measure the winding resistance immediately. because of inertia and power cut-off time. Therefore, IEC standards suggest the measurement time. But during the measurement time, the winding temperature cools down. It causes the value of winding resistance is variable. Several conditions which possibly occurred by the measurement time of IEC 60034-1 are suggested. and The efficiency evaluation of 3phase induction motors is carried out by IEC 60034-2-1 with the several conditions. As the results, we find out the winding resistance rapidly goes down within 15 sec. so It proves that the winding resistance should be measured within 15 sec. for the efficiency evaluating of 3phase induction motor.
