This paper presents investigation of damping characteristics of squeeze mode type MR mount experimently. The MR mount proposed in the study has variable damping characteristics according to the applied magnetic field strength. Impact and force excitation tests were performed. The dynamic property of the mount using MR fluid was compared with that of the mount using conventional oil. (omitted)

This paper proposes an optimal control algorithm which determines active damping resistor values considering load variation and grid side current THD. Proposed optimal control algorithm improves grid side current THD of the interlinking converter without passive damping resistor and is verified by simulation under variable load conditions.
In this paper, the numerical finite element formulations were derived for the linearized Navier-Stokes' equations with assumptions of two-dimensional incompressible, homogeneous viscous fluid field, and small oscillation and the FAMD (Fluid Added Mass and Damping) code was developed for practical applications calculating the fluid added mass and damping. In formulations, a fluid domain is discretized with C$\^$0/-type quadratic quadrilateral elements containing eight nodes using a mixed interpolation method, i.e., the interpolation function for the velocity variable is approximated by a quadratic function based on all eight nodal points and the interpolation function for the pressure variable is approximated by a linear function based on the four nodal points at vertices. Using the developed code, the various characteristics of the fluid added mass and damping are investigated for the concentric cylindrical shell and the actual hexagon arrays of the liquid metal reactor cores.

Semi-active suspension systems are greatly expected to be in the mainstream of future controlled suspensions for passenger cars. In this study, a continuous variable damper for a passenger car suspension is developed, which is controlled actively and exhibits high performance with light weight, low cost, and low energy consumption. To get fast response of the damper, reverse damping mechanism is adapted, and to get small pressure change rate after blow-off, a pilot controlled proportional valve is designed and analyzed. The reverse continuous variable damper is designed as a HS-SH damper that offers good body control with reduced transferred input force from tire, compared with any other type of suspension system. The damper structure is designed, so that rebound and compression damping force can be tuned independently, of which variable valve is placed externally. The rate of pressure change with respect to the flow rate after blow-off becomes smooth when the fixed orifice size increases, which means that the blow-off slope is controllable using the fixed orifice size. The damping force variance is wide and continuous, and is controlled by the spool opening, of which scheme is usually adapted in proportional valves. The reverse continuous variable damper developed in this study is expected to be utilized in the semi-active suspension systems in passenger cars after its performance and simplicity of the design is confirmed through real car test.
In order to protect a structure over its full life cycle, a novel tuned mass damper (TMD), the so-called semi-active eddy current pendulum tuned mass damper (SAEC-PTMD), which can retune its frequency and damping ratio in real-time, is proposed in this study. The structural instantaneous frequency is identified through a Hilbert-Huang transformation (HHT), and the SAEC-PTMD pendulum is adjusted through an HHT-based control algorithm. The eddy current damping parameters are discussed, and the relationship between effective damping coefficients and air gaps is fitted through a polynomial function. The semi-active eddy current damping can be adjusted in real-time by adjusting the air gap based on the linear-quadratic-Gaussian (LQG)-based control algorithm. To verify the vibration control effect of the SAEC-PTMD, an idealized linear primary structure equipped with an SAEC-PTMD excited by harmonic excitations and near-fault pulse-like earthquake excitations is proposed as one of the two case studies. Under strong earthquakes, structures may go into the nonlinear state, while the Bouc-Wen model has a wild application in simulating the hysteretic characteristic. Therefore, in the other case study, a nonlinear primary structure based on the Bouc-Wen model is proposed. An optimal passive TMD is used for comparison and the detuning effect, which results from the cumulative damage to primary structures, is considered. The maximum and root-mean-square (RMS) values of structural acceleration and displacement time history response, structural acceleration, and displacement response spectra are used as evaluation indices. Power analyses for one earthquake excitation are presented as an example to further study the energy dissipation effect of an SAECPTMD. The results indicate that an SAEC-PTMD performs better than an optimized passive TMD, both before and after damage occurs to the primary structure.

The feasibility of using fluidic components for improving certain performance characteristics of the suspension systems for tracked vehicle is investigated. This study describes three variable damping systems for which the damping coefficients are function of relative velocity and absolute a of the vehicle body. Through the comparison analysis between constant damping coefficient damper and each of variable dampers. the followings were found: (1)Fluidic Diode Damper gave less accelerations, (2)Both Fluidic Diode Damper and Relative Velocity Damper gave the less time for which the wheel is off the ground, (3) At low vehicle velocity Fluidic Diode Damper gave low energy dissipation rate, while at high vehicle velocity Turbulence Accelerometer Damper gave low energy dissipation rate.
Launch vehicles cause several shock events during their lift-off. The excessive shock loads in the several thousands of g's level can results in permanent damage to electronics, optics and other sensitive payload components. The shock can be attenuated by mounting a shock absorber. In this paper, we proposed a semi-active control logic to attenuate the shock so that the input acceleration to main instruments does not exceed the allowable maximum acceleration value. For the performance investigation, two elements model of variable damping and spring stiffness has been used and the analysis results indicate that the proposed semi-active control logic attenuates shock level better than an optimal passive and conventional semi-active on-off control system.

This paper presents investigation of damping characteristics of squeeze mode type MR (magneto-Rheological) mount experimentally. Since damping property of the MR fluid is changed by variation of the applied magnetic field strength, squeeze mode type MR mount proposed in the study has variable damping characteristics according to the applied magnetic field strength. Impact and excitation tests were performed to investigate the dynamic properties of squeeze mode type MR mount. Responses of the mount were compared in proportion to the applied magnetic field strength. The experimental results show that the mount can effectively reduce vibration amplitude in a wide frequency range by changing the applied magnetic field strength.

A semi-passive vibration isolation control method for enhancing pointing performance of on-board payload has been derived, and its effectiveness has been evaluated through numerical simulation. The semi-passive control law proposed in this study was derived so as to obtain the same performance as a high passive damping at low frequencies and obtain the same performance as a passive low damping at high frequencies. In the numerical simulation, the intended vibration isolation performance of the semi-passive control law has been obtained.

Continuously controlled semi-active suspension system may improve ride and handling properties. Here, as a mechanism to control the fluid flow solenoid valve mechanism is introduced and added to the basic passive damper to create damping forces of the shock absorbers. The system may produce continuously controlled damping forces in both solenoid valve only and combination with passive shock absorber including fluid flow is studied, and then the combined model is added to the full vehicle model to evaluate its ride and handling performance. Finally, the simulation results are compared to the vehicle models having similar suspension system.
