The weldability of high purity aluminum-lithium binary alloys has been investigated using the Varestraint test. Autogenous GTAW (gas-tungsten-arc-welds) were run along specimens of different lithium concentration using three sets of welding parameters. Welding voltage was held constant at 10 volts. Welding current (70∼100 amps) and travel speed (23∼33 cm/min) were the parameter varied. Hot-tearing susceptibility varied with lithium content and exhibited a steep peak at 2.6 weight percent lithium. Depth of penetration increased with increasing heat input and lithium concentration. The susceptibility is influenced by the wettability of dendrites by the interdendritic eutectic liquid as well as the time available for back-Siting by eutectic liquid. The welding condition of welding current 70A and travel speed 23 cm/min was showed good resistance to cracking in aluminum-lithium alloys. Suggestions for improving weld cracking resistance are also provided.
The interest of austenitic heat resistant stainless steels containing high Si has increased because they have higher resistance of oxidation and higher strength at high temperature than STS 310. This study carried out Varestraint test for evaluation of solidification cracking sensitivity of 14 different stainless steels. As a result of Varestraint test, all specimens solidified as primary ferrite, and solidification crack sensitivity increased with adding $N_2$ to shielding gas. Nb and W had beneficial effect on solidification crack resistance in case of less than FN 2 containing, but crack sensitivity increased with Nb and W in case of more than FN 2. Ce had beneficial effect on solidification crack resistance but impaired weld bead appearance.
In order to quantitatively evaluate the solidification cracking susceptibility in laser welds of three types of austenitic stainless steels (type 310: A mode, type 316-A: AF mode, type 316-B: FA mode solidifications), the laser beam welding (LBW) transverse-Varestraint tests consisted of multi-mode fiber laser, welding robot and hydraulic pressure system were performed. As the welding speed increased from 1.67 to 40.0 mm/s, the solidification brittle temperature range (BTR) of laser welds for type 316 stainless steels enlarged (316-A: from 37 to 46 K, 316-B: from 14 to 40 K), while the BTR for type 310 stainless steel reduced from 146 to 120 K. In other words, it founds that solidification cracking susceptibility could not be simply mitigated through application of LBW process, and the BTR variation behavior is quite different upon solidification mode of austenitic stainless steels.
A study was carried out to determine the solidification cracking susceptibility of Ni-base superalloy as a function of Fe content in base metal. Three kinds of Ni-base superalloys with three different levels of Fe content were used. The solidification cracking susceptibility was evaluated by the Trans-Varestraint test at four different strain levels. Quantitative analysis of crack revealed that the solidification crack length and the temperature range in which hot cracking occurred in fusion zone (Brittle Temperature Range, BTR) decreased with a decrease in Fe content. Further, the thermo-calc data indicated that the solidification temperature range also decreased with decreasing Fe content. From these results, it was deduced that the improvement of the solidification cracking susceptibility with decreasing Fe content was attributed to the decrease of the solidification temperature range.
The ferritic stainless steels are generally considered to have poor weldability compared with that of the austenitic stainless steels. However the primary advantages of ferritic stainless steels include lower material cost than the more commonly used austenitic stainless steels and a greater resistance to stress corrosion cracking. Thus, the weldability of ferritic stainless steels was investigated in this study. In concerning the weldability, Grain size measurement test, Erichsen test and Varestraint test were involved. full penetration welds were produced by autogeneous direct current straight polarity (DCSP) and pulsed currents gas tungsten arc welding (GIAW) and the effect of pulsed currents welding on the welds was compared to that of DCSP welding. The results showed that pulsed current was effective to refine grain size in the weld metal and the finest grain size was obtained at the frequency of 150Hz. In addition, the ductility of welds was lower than that of base metal. Finally, autogeneous type 444 welds were less susceptible to macro solidification cracks, but more sensitive to micro cracks; SEM/EDS analysis indicated that all the inclusions in the crack showed enrichment of Mn, Si, O and S.
The tendency and degree of hot cracking of high strength 5083, 6N01 and 7N01 Al alloy welds by using DCSP-GTAW through modified Varestraint test and autogenous butt welding were investigated. In hot cracking test, 6N01 alloy showed the highest susceptibility to hot cracking in the weld metal and HAZ. Cracking susceptibilities generally increased with increase of solidification temperature range of the base metal and bead penetration-to-width ratio of the weld metal. The cracks in welds of the alloys vertically formed to solid-liquid interface and propagated along with columnar grain boundaries. The fracture facets of cracks showed the typical morphology of solidification crack observed as dendritic structures. Especially, in 6N01 alloy, liquation cracks which were due to elements of Si, Fe and Mg also observed in HAZ near fusion boundary. In butt welding of different Al alloys, the bead crack was mainly occurred in the welds of 6N01, 7N01 and other Al alloys together with 6N01 or 7N01. In the butt welds of 7N01, it was found that the component of Cu had an effect on the higher susceptibility to the hot cracking.
Weldability of DS100 and HY type high strength-toughness steel plates, tentatively produced as domestic production, was investigated. DS100 and DS130A had nearly same hardenability in HAZ in spite of its difference in Ceq. Based upon the y-groove test results, cold cracking susceptibility of DS130 was superior to that of DS100 because of its lower hydrogen level in weld metal. Solidification cracking tested by the Trans-Varestraint test was occured in all of the weld metals, and its susceptibility was high in the row of DS100, DS130A and DS130B. However, no liquation cracking and ductility-dip cracking tested by the Longi-Varestraint test with 6.0% augmented strain were detected in base metal and reheated weld metal. Toughness in the GMA welding joint was satisfied with the relative Mill Spec, even though welded joint of DS100 had relatively low impact energy especially at the weld metal.
The effect of residual metallic sodium on the solidification cracking susceptibility of type 316FR stainless steel was investigated via transverse-Varestraint tests. And a solidification brittle temperature range (BTR) of type 316FR stainless steel was 37 K. However, the BTR expanded from 37 to 67 K, as the amount of metallic sodium at the specimen surface increased from 0 to $7.99mg/cm^2$. Microstructural observation of the weld metal suggested that metallic sodium existed in the weld metal, including in the cell boundaries, during welding solidification. Thermodynamic calculations suggested that sodium expanded the temperature range of solidliquid coexistence during welding solidification of the steel weld metal. Therefore, the increased solidification cracking susceptibility (i.e., expansion of the BTR) in the residual sodium environment was attributed to enhanced segregation of sodium during the welding solidification; this segregation, in turn, resulted in an expanded temperature range of solid-liquid coexistence.
It is important to evaluate austenitic heat resistant stainless steel because of low weldability of austenitic heat resistant stainless steel containing high Si. This study took varestraint test for evaluation of solidification cracking sensitivity and Erichsen test for evaluation of weld metal ductility. As a result of tests, solidification crack sensitivity increased with adding $N_2$ to shielding gas, and W had detrimental effect on crack resistance, but Ce had beneficial effect on crack resistance. Under same heat input, ductility of weld metal increased with welding speed.
In order to investigate the hot cracking phenomena of the Inconel 690 overlay welds, the hot cracking test(modified Varestraint test) was performed by varying augmented strain and welding speed in GTAW. A total of five kinds of specimens was used in the hot cracking test. The specimens used were two kinds of one layer specimens that were composed of just Inconel 690 deposited metal and three kinds of double layer specimens that were composed with as upper part of Inconel 690 weld metal and lower part of SA508 cl.3 or STS 309L. The main results are as fo11ows: In the welds composed of just Inconel 690, as the augmented strain was more increased and the welding speed was more decreased, the extent of cracking was more increased. And these cracks were mainly solidification cracks, and liquation cracks were also observed partially in HAZ. And hot cracking susceptibily of Inconel 690 welds by using filler metals containing Nb were higher than that of the welds with Nb free. The hot cracking susceptibility of Inconel 690 weld metal was increased with dilution of SA 508 cl.3 and STS 309L, and the influence of SA 508 cl.3 was higher than that of 575 309L. The results of calculation of $TSC\Delta$ and $TLC\Delta$ in Inconel 690 weld metal changed by dilution with base metal or neighboring welds were agreed well with the results of hot cracking test in this study. Therefore, it was expected that the hot cracking was considerably decreased or prevented by using proper welding conditions such as lower heat input, filler metals, base metal and neighboring welds.
