Macroscopic Characteristics of Evaporating Dimethyl Ether(DME) Spray (Dimethyl Ether(DME)의 증발과 거시적 분무 특성)

  • Dimethyl Ether(DME) has been considered as one of the most attractive alternative fuels for compression ignition engine. Its main advantage in diesel engine application is high efficiency of diesel cycle with soot free combustion though conventional fuel injection system has to be modified due to the physical properties of DME. Experimental study of DME and conventional diesel spray employing a common-rail type fuel injection system with a 5-hole sac type injector was performed in a constant volume vessel pressurized by nitrogen gas. Spray cone angles and penetrations of the DME spray were characterized and compared with those of diesel. For evaluation of the evaporating characteristics of the DME, shadowgraphy technique employing an Ar-ion laser and an ICCD camera was adopted. Tip of the DME spray was formed in mushroom-like shape at atmospheric chamber pressure, which disappeared in higher chamber pressure. Spray tip penetration and spray cone angle of the DME became similar to those of diesel under 3MPa of chamber pressure. Higher injection pressure provided wider vapor phase area while it decreased with higher chamber pressure condition.

Gas cooling heat transfer coefficient for $CO_2$-PEC9 mixture under supercritical condition (초임계조건에서 $CO_2$-PEC9 혼합물의 물성예측을 통한 냉각 열전달특성 연구)

  • Due to environmental concerns $CO_2$ has been reintroduced as a potential candidate to replace HFCs in refrigeration systems. Oils are always required in a vapor-compression cycle, and thus actual working fluid in the system is $CO_2$-oil mixtures even though the oil concentrations are low at the heat exchangers and the expansion device. The cooling heat transfer coefficients for $CO_2$-oil mixtures under supercritical condition are required to designing of the gas cooler in the $CO_2$ refrigeration system properly. In the present study, the gas cooling heat transfer coefficients for $CO_2$-PEC9 was estimated by using the Gnileinski correlation, and the Kim and Ghajar model through the previous prediction models for the thermo-physical properties of $CO_2$-oil mixture. The Gnileinski correlation was used when the oil wt.% in the mixture is less than 1.0, and for the higher oil concentration the Kim and Ghajar model was applied. The estimated results agree with the experimental results conducted by the Dang et al.

  • Experimental basic study was performed to understand the characteristics of sub-cooled refrigerant using a cold heat storage system. This system was made up general vapor-compression refrigeration cycle added sub-cooler and ice storage tank. The purpose of this study are to application use of cold-heat storage systems multiplicity of fields and to understand of sub-cooling system. At the condition using ice storage system, the ice making process was operated during night time by electric power. And then, the refrigerant was sub-cooled using stored cold-heat after being discharged from the air cooling condenser during the day time. Comparing the result at general operation with the operation using sub-cooling system. This study showed the effects of the sub-cooled degree. The cooling performance was increased owing to the sub-cooling of refrigerant during day time, and the compressor consume power was a little decreased. Thus the COP was also increased owing to the sub-cooling of refrigerant.

Performance Characteristics of Water-Chilling Heat Pump Using CO2 on the Variation of Secondary Fluid Conditions (2차 유체 조건 변화에 대한 CO2용 수냉식 열펌프의 성능 특성에 관한 연구)

  • The performance characteristics of water-chilling heat pump using $CO_2$ with respect to variation of inlet temperature and mass flow rate of secondary fluid was investigated experimentally. An experimental apparatus is consisted of a compressor, a gas cooler, an expansion valve, an evaporator and a liquid receiver. All heat exchangers used in the test rig are counter-flow-type heat exchangers with concentric dual tubes, which ate made of copper. The gas cooler and the evaporator consist of 6 and 4 straight sections respectively arranged in parallel, each has 2.4 m length. The experimental results were summarized as the followings : As inlet temperature of secondary fluid in the gas cooler increases from $10^{\circ}C$ to $40^{\circ}C$, the compressor work, heating capacity and heating COP were varied to 37.8%, -13%, -35.9%, respectively. The heating capacity, compressor work, heating COP were turned into 23.3%, 6.42%, 13.1%, respectively when ass flow rate of secondary fluid in the evaporator increases from 70 g/s to 150 g/s. The above tendency is similar with performance variation with respect to temperature variation of secondary fluid in the conventional vapor compression cycle.

  • Improvement in the energy efficiency has been studied of the desiccant cooling system by applying a vapor compression type heat pump to modify the system into a hybrid system. The cycle simulation was performed and the results were compared between a reference desiccant cooling system composed of a desiccant rotor, a sensible rotor and a regenerative evaporative cooler, and a hybrid desiccant cooling system with the sensible rotor being replaced by a heat pump. Though the electric consumption increases as much as the compressor power consumption, the total cooling capacity increases and the thermal energy input decreases by the addition of the heat pump. Therefore, the total energy efficiency can be improved if the increase in the electric consumption can be compensated with the increase in the cooling capacity and the decrease in the thermal energy input. The results showed that the total energy efficiency is optimized at a certain heat pump capacity. When the heat from the CHP plant is used for the thermal energy input, the energy consumption of the hybrid system is reduced by 20~30% compared with the reference system when the heat pump shares 30~40% of the total cooling capacity.

Prediction of Density and Viscosity for $CO_2$-PEC9 Mixture at Low Oil Concentration (낮은 오일 농도에서 $CO_2$-PEC9 혼합물의 밀도와 점성 예측)

  • Due to environmental concerns $CO_2$ has been reintroduced as a potential candidate to replace HFCs in refrigeration systems. Oils are always required in a vapor-compression cycle, and thus it is necessary to precisely estimate the thermodynamic mixture properties of $CO_2$-lubricant oil. In the present study, the density and the viscosity of the mixture was calculated by the Redlich and Kwong type EoS and the modified Peng and Robinson type viscosity EoS, respectively. The viscosity model was based on the similarity between P-v-T and T-$\mu$-P relationships. The predicted results were compared with the experimental data of Pens ado et al. whose test conditions were 100$\sim$650 bar of pressure and 303 K$\sim$353 K of temperature with the $CO_2$-POEs mixtures under 92.2 wt.% and 83.3 wt.% of $CO_2$ concentration. The mean deviations of the mixture density were 7.93% and 8.32% for 92.2 wt.% and 83.3 wt.% of $CO_2$ concentration, respectively. Concerning the viscosity, the mean deviations were 4% and 10% for 92.2 wt.% and 83.3 wt.% of $CO_2$ concentration under the Pensado et al.'s test conditions.

  • Hybrid heat pumps, which combine the vapor compression and absorption heat pump cycle, can efficiently produce hot water of $80^{\circ}-90^{\circ}C$ from the low temperature of ${\sim}50^{\circ}C$. In this study, the performance of a two-stage hybrid heat pump (HHP) was compared with a single-stage hybrid heat pump using EES (Engineering Equation Solver). For the same operating conditions, the two-stage HHP showed a slightly higher COP (Coefficient Of Performance) and more stable operating conditions than the single-stage HHP. Moreover, the maximum working fluid temperature of the two-stage HHP was found to be lower than that of the single-stage HHP by about 40 K, which makes the working conditions of the lubricating oil safer. The COPs of both systems decreased with increasing UA-values. However, the heat output of the HHP was increased at the same time.

A Study on the Experimental Measurements and Its Recovery for the Rate of Boil-Off Gas from the Storage Tank of the CO2 Transport Ship (CO2 수송선 저장탱크의 BOG 측정 실험 및 회수에 관한 연구)

  • $CO_2$ is generated by the combustion reaction, when getting the energy from fossil fuel. If the carbon dioxide emissions increases more, the global warming problem will become more serious. CCS (carbon capture storage) needs to be developed for the prevention of this. When liquefied $CO_2$ is transported, BOG (boil-off gas) is generated because of several problems. In the study, by injecting liquefied $CO_2$ in two tanks which contains $40m^3$each, the amount of BOG and its composition were measured during 30 days when generating pressure changes and external heat, loading, unloading. In result, 16,040 kg of BOG was generated and the composition has been found out to be 99.95% $CO_2$ and 0.05 % $N_2$. Also, we conducted simulation process for reliquefaction of generated BOG with vapor compression cycle using the PRO/II with PROVISION version 9.2. As a result, the refrigeration cycle of the total circulation flow rate was 42.07 kg/h and the condenser utility consumption was 48.85 kg/h.

  • When Liquified Natural Gas (LNG) is vaporized into NG for industrial and household usage, tremendous cold energy was transferred from LNG to seawater during phase-changing process. This heat exchanger loop is not only a waste of huge cold energy, but will cause thermal pollution to the coastal fishery area also when cold water was re-injected into the sea. In this study, an innovation design has been performed to reclaim the cold energy for -35 to $62^{\circ}C$ refrigerated warehouse. Conventionally, this was done by installing mechanical refrigeration systems, necessitating tremendous electrical power to drive temperature. A closed loop LNG heat exchangers in series was designed to replace the mechanical or vapor-compression refrigeration cycle by process simulator. The process simulation software of PRO II with provision has been used to simulate this process for various conditions, what to effect on cold energy and used energy for re-liquefaction and evaporation process. In addition, through analysis the effect of the change of LNG supply pressure on sensible and latent heat, optimum operational conditions was suggested for LNG cold energy warehouse.

  • In this paper, prediction and comparison on COP(coefficient of performance) of R744-R404A cascade refrigeration system are presented to offer the basic design data for the operating parameters of the system. The operating parameters considered in this study include subcooling and superheating degree, compressor efficiency, and condensing and evaporating temperature in the R404A high- and R744 low-temperature cycle, respectively. The main results were summarized as follows : The prediction for performance of R744-R404A cascade refrigeration system have been proposed through multiple regression analysis and compared with other researcher's correlations. As a result, prediction proposed in the study shows disagreement with existing equations. Therefore, it is necessary to propose the more accurate correlation predicting the COP of R744-R404A cascade refrigeration system through an addition experiments.
