  • To evaluate structural safety factor of the jet vane for the thrust deflection system under the dynamic pressure and very high temperature($2700^{\circ}C$) of the combustion gas flow, the high temperature tension tests of refractory metals and 3-D nonlinear numerical simulations are performed. Through the analysis of high temperature structural behavior for jet vane, the structural safety of jet vane is evaluated, and numerical results are compared with static pound tests of jet vanes. It has been found that most of structural and thermal loading is concentrated on the vane shaft which worked as safe under $1400^{\circ}C$. From the comparison of static ground tests and numerical results, the evaluation criterion using the vane load and shaft displacement is more useful to estimate the structural safety than using the equivalent stress.

  • Performance characteristics in pump mode of pump-turbines are vital for the safe and effective operation of pumped storage power plants. However, the head characteristics are different under different guide vane openings. In this paper, 3-D steady simulations were performed under 13mm, 19mm and 25mm guide vane openings. Three groups of operating points under the three GVOs were chosen based on experimental validation to investigate the influence of guide vane setting on flow patterns upstream and downstream. The results reveal that, the guide vane setting will obviously change the flow pattern downstream, which in turn influences the flow upstream. It shows a strong effect on hydraulic loss (power dissipation) in the guide and stay vanes. It is also found that the hydraulic loss mainly comes from the flow separation and vortices. In addition, in some operating conditions, the change of guide vane opening will change the flow angle at the runner inlet and outlet, which will change the Euler momentum (power input). The joint action of Euler momentum and hydraulic loss results in the change of the head characteristics.

  • In this study, a guide vane with varying positions and incidence angles was adopted to a pin-fin channel to analyze the change in thermal performance and pressure loss characteristics. A numerical analysis was conducted to investigate the effect of incidence angles and positions on heat transfer and flow characteristics at Re =1400. The results of it were compared those of a pin-fin channel without a guide vane. In case 1 when the incidence angle is $0^{\circ}$, the heat transfer performance is maximized and improved by approximately 5% when compared to the pin-fin channel without the guide vane. In case 2 when the incidence angle is $10^{\circ}$, the pressure loss is minimized and decreased by approximately 1.9% when compared to the pin-fin channel without the guide vane.

  • Siliceous and calcareous deep-sea core sediments were collected by a multiple corer from the KODOS (Korea Deep Ocean Study) area, northeast equatorial Pacific, to compare vane shear strengths measured by two different apparatuses and in different places of on-board and on-land laboratories. The apparatuses were 1) a hand-held vane with four blades of $2.0{\times}2.0$ cm, and 2) a motorized shear vane system with four blades of $1.0{\times}0.88$ attached on a rotational viscometer. Depth profiles of shear strengths of core samples determined by the apparatuses do not show any consistent difference. Also, there is no consistent difference between shear strength values measured on-board and on-land laboratories after storing the core samples for three months in a cold room by a motorized shear vane system. However, there are considerable differences between depth profiles of shear strengths measured at four different points (holes) of a core sample. Moreover, significant differences among the profiles of different tube samples from a multiple corer within a sampling station were observed. Heterogeneity in physical properties of each depth and sediment column, possibly due to bioturbation and bottom current flows, is likely responsible for the differences in the geotechnical properties.

  • Thrust vector control system is a control device which is mounted on the exit of the nozzle to generate pitch, yaw and roll directional force by deflecting flow direction of the supersonic jet from the nozzle. Thermal and aerodynamic loads are acting on the surface of jet vane when it is exposed to the jet flow. Axial thrust loss and side thrust loss are affected by shock patterns and interactions between jet-vanes which varies with jet-vane geometry and turning angle. In this research, the performance estimation using the numerical simulation analysis of the nozzle is given and the investigation of the flow visualization and aerodynamic performance with the enforced power to the vane is taken.

  • In this paper, the performance characteristics of the impeller and volute in the 2 vane pump were investigated using response surface method (RSM) with commercial computation fluid dynamics (CFD) code. Design variables were defined with the impeller blade angle and volute area distribution. The objective functions were defined as the total head, total efficiency and solid material size of the 2 vane pump. The design optimization of the design variables was determined using the RSM. The numerical results for the reference and optimum models were compared and discussed in this work.

  • The heat transfer and pressure loss characteristics of a rotating two-pass channel with a guide vane in the turning region have been studied using three-dimensional Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes (RANS) analysis, and the shape of the guide vane has been optimized using surrogate modeling optimization technique. For the optimization, thickness, location and angle of the guide vanes have been selected as design variables. The objective function has been defined as a linear combination of the heat transfer and the friction loss related terms with a weighting factor. Latin hypercube sampling has been applied to determine the design points as design of experiments. A weighted-average surrogate model, PBA has been used as the surrogate model. The guide vane in the turning region does not influence the heat transfer in the first passage upstream of the turning region, but enhances largely the heat transfer in the turning region and the second passage. In an example of the optimization, the objective function has been increased by 13.6%.
