The Effect of Economic Growth and Urbanization on Poverty Reduction in Vietnam

  • This article aims to measure the impact of economic growth and urbanization on poverty reduction in Vietnam, and verify whether economic growth and urbanization will help reduce poverty rates. Data for this study are tabular data related to growth, urbanization and poverty at the provincial level for the period of nine years, from 2006 to 2014 provided by the Vietnam General Statistics Office and the Vietnam General Department of Customs. The level of economic growth and urbanization mentioned in the study is reflected in such indicators as GDP value, exports value, imports value, urbanization rate and employment rate. The authors used logistic regression models with fixed-effects and logistic regression models with random effects. With 5% confidence level tested by the Chi-Square test of Hausman trial with the fixed-effect model, research results show that: (1) factors with significant negative impact on the poverty rate include imports value, urbanization rate and, employment rate; (2) factors that do not affect the poverty rate include exports value and GDP value. Based on the research results, this study proposes a number of policy recommendations to help promote economic growth, to sustain the urbanization process, and to contribute directly and positively to poverty reduction in Vietnam.

배기량과 차량중량에 따른 LPG 연료를 사용하는 승용 및 승합형 자동차 온실가스 배출 특성에 관한 연구 (A Study on Greenhouse Gas Emission Characteristics of Passenger Car and Van with LPG Fuel According to Displacement and Vehicle Weight)

  • In Korea, passenger car and van using LPG fuel including taxi constantly increased due to the high cost of fuel. Recently, the emission standard has continuously tightened in the world. In this investigation was conducted the greenhouse gas emission characteristics of LPG vehicles according to the displacement and weight. Exhaust emission characteristics of 13 test LPG vehicles from about 1.0 L to 3.0 L displacements were measured and analyzed by using chassis dynamometer and emission analyzer. It is revealed that the greenhouse gas emission was showed the increasing tendency as the displacement and curb weight increased. Also, greenhouse gas emission of SC03 driving cycle has highest value and that of HWFET driving cycle shows the lowest value.

Optimal Placement of Phasor Measurement Unit for Observation Reliability Enhancement

  • Phasor Measurement Unit (PMU) placement is a crucial problem for State Estimation (SE) of the power system, which can ensure that the power network is fully observed. Further, the observation reliability problem of the system has been concerned in the operation conditions. In this paper, based on modified weighted adjacent matrix ($A_w$), an optimal placement method is proposed to solve simultaneously two problems involving the optimal PMU placement problem and the observation reliability enhancement problem of the system. The purpose of the proposed method is to achieve both the minimum total cost and the maximum observation reliability, with a focus on increasing the security of observability, strengthening the observation reliability of buses as well as enhancing the effectiveness of redundancy. Simulations on IEEE 14, 24, 30 and 57 bus test systems are presented to justify the methodology. The results of this study show that the proposed method is not only ensuring the power network having the observability effectively but also enhancing significantly the observation reliability. Therefore, it can be a useful tool for SE of the power system.

Factors Influencing Consumer Behavior Towards Green Consumption: An Empirical Study in Vietnam

  • This study aims to investigate factors influencing customer behavior towards nylon bags and single-use plastics. These factors are environmental protection awareness, health protection awareness, sense of responsibility, expectations, and green marketing. A quantitative method with the use of surveys is deployed to collect data of young people under 30, generating 1650 valid responses. The collected data is then analyzed with SPSS 22, using Cronbach's Alpha and Exploratory Factor Analysis to test the reliability of the model before validating the hypotheses by regression analysis. The study found that the majority of respondents are inclined to use plastic bags, despite their environmental awareness. The results also demonstrate that health consciousness, environmental concerns, self-driven responsibility for the sustainability of young people have a significant impact on their behaviors in using nylon bags and plastic products, whereas expectation and green marketing are confirmed not to be the factors. The study suggests that if green marketing is to gain higher influence, an increase in research and development to support other environmentally friendly packaging would be the right path. Finally, this research proposes some feasible recommendations for the government, which include imposing bolder and more targeted environmental policies on consumers and introducing educational campaigns to raise awareness about minimizing plastic consumption.

Experimental Testing and Finite Element Modelling of Steel Columns Weakened to Facilitate Building Demolition

  • Negligible research has been conducted to date on how to analyse weakened columns, thus safety risks are still involved when structures are weakened prior to demolition. There are various methods available for demolishing steel structures. One of the most effective methods that has been developed involves pre-cutting steel columns at a certain height, so that the least effort can be used to collapse the structure by means of pulling out some of the columns. This paper presents (a) an experimental setup developed to test the capacity of axially loaded weakened columns, which is used to (b) validate a finite element (FE) model. The two pre-cuts that are presented in this paper are (1) the double window cut and (2) the triangular window cut, which are both commonly used in industry. A column weakened with a double window cut or triangular window cut reduces the axial load capacity by up to 50 and 40%, respectively. The FE models developed predict the axial failure load of weakened columns for a double window cut and triangular window cut are generally within an accuracy of less than 8 and 10%, respectively. It is shown at higher slendernesses the influence of column cuts is less than would be intuitively expected because global buckling becomes dominant.

The Distribution of Information through Online Meeting after COVID-19: Examining the Effect of Past Behavior

  • Purpose: Online meeting is chosen instead of face-to-face conferences as a solution that ensures both effectiveness and legality during times of strong epidemic outbreaks. In the current period, managers can have different types of meeting options for information distribution. This study has examined the effect of past behavior on the managers' intention of organizing online meetings. Research design, data and methodology: Data were collected from a survey with 475 managers and put into SmartPLS 4.0 for analysis. Partial least squares structural equation modeling (PLS-SEM) was employed to test relationships in the research model. Results: The findings indicated that past behavior plays the most critical role in explaining the organizing online meeting intention of managers, followed by attitude and subjective norms. Meanwhile, the perceived behavioral control factor has absolutely no effect on intention in the context of this study. Notably, attitude and subjective norms also remarkably mediated the impact of past behavior on managers' intention. Conclusions: This study has added to the understanding of the meeting organization behavior of managers. Even if the epidemic is under control, the administrators should still organize some meetings in the form of online because it will affect the social perceptions of future behavior and behavioral intention.

Thermal and Mechanical Properties of Electro-Slag Cast Steel for Hot Working Tools

  • The thermal and mechanical properties of an electro-slag cast steel of a similar chemical composition with an AISI-6F2 steel are investigated and compared with a forged AISI-6F2 steel. AISI-6F2 is a hot-working tool steel. Electro-slag casting (ESC) is a method of producing ingots in a water-cooled metal mold by the heat generated in an electrically conductive slag when current passes through a consumable electrode. The ESC method provides the possibility of producing material for the high quality hot-working tools and ingots directly into a desirable shape. In the present study, the thermal and mechanical properties of yield strength, tensile strength, hardness, impact toughness, wear resistance, thermal fatigue resistance, and thermal shock resistance for electro-slag cast and forged steel are experimentally measured for both annealed and quenched and tempered heat treatment conditions. It has been found that the electro-slag cast steel has comparable thermal and mechanical properties to the forged steel.

테트라포드로 피복된 사석경사제에서 월파 성능 및 예측모형의 비교 (Comparision of Overtopping Performance and Prediction Models for Rubble Mound Breakwaters Armoured Tetrapod)

  • 테트라포드로 피복된 사석경사제를 대상으로 하여 설계파 조건, 피복층 마루폭 그리고 마루 여유고를 변화시켜 수리실험을 수행한 후, 대상 구조물의 월파 성능을 검토하며 그리고 널리 사용되고 있는 월파량 예측모형을 적용하여 수리실험 결과와 비교를 통해 예측모형들의 특성을 파악하였다. 사면경사와 주기는 월파량에 상당히 영향을 미치나, 피복층 마루폭의 변화에 따른 월파량의 차이는 미미한 편이다. Owen(1980)의 예측모형은 계측월파량과 비교하여 과대 예측하는 반면에, Van der Meer et al.(1998)의 예측모형은 비교적 급한 사면($cot{\alpha}$=1.5)에서만 과소 예측하는 경향이 있다. Besley(1999)와 Pedersen(1996)의 예측모형은 보다 폭이 넓은 피복층 마루폭을 가진 사면에서 계측월파량에 비교적 좋은 일치를 보여주나, 모든 실험조건에 대해서는 일반적으로 수정 Pedersen의 예측모형이 계측월파량에 가장 일치하는 결과를 나타낸다.

마이크로 멤브레인을 이용한 풍화토의 함수특성곡선 분석 (An Interpretation of Soil Water Retention Curves of Weathered Soils Using Micro-Membrane)

  • 불포화토의 함수특성시험은 오랜 기간이 소요된다. 이를 줄이기 위하여 고압 공기합입치 디스크를 마이크로 멤브레인으로 대체하였다. 마이크로 멤브레인을 적용한 함수특성시험을 수행하여 그 결과를 세라믹 디스크를 이용한 시험결과와 비교하였다. 5개 지역에 대하여 많은 시료를 분석한 결과 마이크로 멤브레인을 적용한 함수특성곡선은 세라믹 디스크를 이용한 시험결과와 유사한 것으로 검증되었다. 이로 인하여 마이크로 멤브레인을 이용하여 신속한 절차기법을 개발하여 많은 양의 함수특성 성과를 획득할 수 있게 되었다. 그리고 마이크로 멤브레인을 이용한 시험을 포함하여 총 5개지역 29개 시료에 대한 함수특성곡선 데이터베이스를 구축하였다. 국내 풍화토에 대하여 불포화 수리특성은 세 그룹으로 분류할 수 있었다. 각 그룹은 van Genuchten 모델 물성치 n값에 따라서 분류되며 n값은 간극비의 함수로 상관관계를 찾을 수 있었다.

주문진 표준사의 상대밀도에 따른 불포화 투수계수함수 산정 (Estimation on Unsaturated Hydraulic Conductivity Function of Jumoonjin Sand for Various Relative Densities)

  • 불포화 조건에서 흙의 초기 밀도에 따라 흙-함수특성곡선이 변화시키게 되며, 이로 인하여 불포화 조건에서 투수특성도 변화하게 된다. 이에 대한 영향을 고찰하기 위하여 상대밀도 40%, 60% 및 75%의 주문진 표준사에 대한 건조 및 습윤과정에서의 흙-함수특성곡선(SWCC)과 불포화 투수계수함수를 산정하였다. van Genuchten (1980)의 방법을 이용하여 흙-함수특성곡선(SWCC)을 산정한 결과 공기유입값과 관계된 계수 ${\alpha}$는 습윤과정에서 더 큰 값을 가지며, 변곡점의 경사에 관계된 계수 n과 잔류함수비에 관계된 계수 m은 건조과정에서 더 큰 값을 갖는다. 그리고 상대밀도가 증가할수록 공기함입치는 증가하지만 수분함입치는 감소하며, 동일한 상대밀도에서 공기함입치는 수분함입치보다 크게 발생된다. 한편, 계수추정방법 가운데 하나인 van Genuchten (1980)의 방법을 적용하여 불포화 투수계수함수를 산정한 결과 불포화 투수계수는 포화시 투수계수로 일정하게 유지되다가 공기함입치 혹은 수분함입치 직전에 급격하게 감소하는 것으로 나타났다. 건조과정에서의 포화투수계수는 습윤과정에서의 포화투수계수보다 크게 나타나며, 상대밀도가 증가함에 따라 건조 및 습윤과정에서의 포화투수계수는 감소한다. 실험결과에 의하면 주문진 표준사의 초기 간극비에 따라 흙-함수특성곡선(SWCC)에서의 공기함입치(AEV)는 감소하고 포화투수계수는 증가하므로, 흙-함수특성곡선(SWCC)과 불포화 투수계수함수(HCF)는 초기 간극비에 영향을 받는 것으로 나타났다.
