Spinel LiNi0.5Mn1.5O4 (LNMO) has been considered as one of most promising cathode material, because of its low-cost and competitive energy density. However, 4.7V vs. Li/Li+ of high operating potential facilitates electrolyte degradation on cathode-electrolyte interface during charge-discharge process. In particular, commercial polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) is not sutaible for LNMO cathode binder because its weak van der waals force induces thick and non-uniform coverage on the cathode surface. In this review, we study high performance binders for LNMO cathode, which forms uniform coating layer to prevent direct contact between electrolyte and LNMO particle as well as modifying high quality cathode electrolyte interphase, improved cell performace.
The molecular dynamics simulation of nanoimprint lithography (NIL) using $SiO_2$ stamp and amorphous poly-(methylmethacrylate) (PNMA) film is performed to study pattern transfer in NIL. Force fields including bond, angle, torsion, van der Waals and electrostatic potential are used to describe the intermolecular and intramolecular force of PMMA molecules and $SiO_2$ stamp. Nose-Hoover thermostat is used to control the system temperature and cell multipole method is adopted to treat long range interactions. The deformation of PMMA film is observed during pattern transfer in the NIL process. For the detail analysis of deformation characteristics, the distributions of density and stress in PMHA film are calculated. The adhesion and friction forces are obtained by dividing the PMMA film into subregions and calculating the interacting force between subregion and stamp. Their effects on the pattern transfer are also discussed as varying the indentation depth and speed.

Dry adhesion caused by Nanoscale contact comes up to important scientific issue. Herein, we introduce bendable nanohairy locking fastener system with high shear strength and mechanically flexible backing. The polymeric patches like velcro are composed of an array of straight nanohairs with 100 nm diameter and $1{\mu}m$ height. To fabricate high aspect vertical nanohairs, we used UV molding method with appropriately flexible and rigid polyurethane acrylate material on PET substrate. Two identical nanohairy patches are easily merged and locked each other induced by van der Waals force. Because nanohairs can be arrayed with high density ${\sim}4{\times}10^8/cm^2$, we can obtain high shear adhesion force on flat surface (~22 N/$cm^2$). Furthermore, we can obtian nanohairy locking system with maximum shear adhesion ~48 N/$cm^2$ of curved surface due to flexibility of PET substrate. We confirm the tendency that shear adhesion force increases, as radius of curvature increases.

Physical adsorption on a silica gel(pore size of 80 nm, particle size of $10{\mu}m$)has been studied for binary mixture of acetone diluted in $CO_2$ by use of a FTIR transmission technique and we have compared the result of FTIR transmission technique with that of a chromatographic technique. Measurements were made at 313.2 K and under pressures up to 15MPa. As the pressure increases from 0.1MPa, the IA(Integral Absorbance) of the hydrogen-bonded OH groups interacting with acetone and adsorbed amount by use of a chromatographic technique increases at first, and reaches a maximum at a pressure below the critical pressure of $CO_2$, and then the intensities decrease gradually with increasing pressure. It is found that the pressure dependency of the chromatographic isotherm is a little larger than that of spectroscopic isotherm in the supercritical fluid region. This difference might be attributable to the weaker van der Waals force and relatively stronger hydrogen-bonding force influencing the adsorption of acetone on the sllica gel. The unique spectroscopic characteristics of amine group which vibrational frequencies of hydroxyl groups on the silica gel surface shift downward to about $1300cm^{-1}$ were measured from experimental result of triethylamine diluted in $CO_2$ or $N_2$.
This model is proposed to describe the buckling behavior of Carbon Nanotubes (CNTs) embedded in an elastic medium taking into account the combined effects of the magnetic field, the temperature, the nonlocal parameter, the number of walls. Using Eringen's nonlocal elasticity theory, thin cylindrical shell theory and Van der Waal force (VdW) interactions, we develop a system of partial differential equations governing the buckling response of CNTs embedded on Winkler, Pasternak, and Kerr foundations in a thermal-magnetic environment. The pre-buckling stresses are obtained by applying airy's stress function and an adjacent equilibrium criterion. To estimate the nonlocal critical buckling load of CNTs under the simultaneous effects of the magnetic field, the temperature change, and the number of walls, an optimization technique is proposed. Furthermore, analytical formulas are developed to obtain the buckling behavior of SWCNTs embedded in an elastic medium without taking into account the effects of the nonlocal parameter. These formulas take into account VdW interactions between adjacent tubes and the effect of terms involving differences in tube radii generally neglected in the derived expressions of the critical buckling load published in the literature. Most scientific research on modeling the effects of magnetic fields is based on beam theories, this motivation pushes me to develop a cylindrical shell model for studying the effect of the magnetic field on the static behavior of CNTs. The results show that the magnetic field has significant effects on the static behavior of CNTs and can lead to slow buckling. On the other hand, thermal effects reduce the critical buckling load. The findings in this work can help us design of CNTs for various applications (e.g. structural, electrical, mechanical and biological applications) in a thermal and magnetic environment.

The mechanisms of formation of transfer film under the condition of wear of Steel AISI1020 by natural rubber were investigated. The transfer film was observed and the formation mechanisms were clarified. The formation process of transfer film on the worn surface of the steel could be divided into two stages. Firstly, the adhesive layer emerged on the worn surface of the steel by adhesion of natural rubber. in which the macromolecular chains of natural rubber joined to the surface of the steel by Van der Waals' force. And then, the iron atom and metal oxide reacted with the macromolecular of natural rubber in the adhesive layer and produced Fe-polymer compound. As a result, the transfer film was formed on the worn surface of the steel. The transfer film was joined to the worn surface of the steel by the chemical bonds and electrostatic force.
In this paper mechanical behavior of the functional gradient materials (FGM) micro-gripper under thermal load and DC voltage is numerically investigated taking into account the effect of intermolecular forces. In contrary to the similar previous works, which have been conducted for homogenous material, here, the FGM material has been implemented. It is assumed that the FGM micro-gripper is made of metal and ceramic and that material properties are changed continuously along the beam thickness according to a given function. The nonlinear governing equations of the static and dynamic deflection of microbeams have been derived using the coupled stress theory. The equations have been solved using the Galerkin based step-by-step linearization method (SSLM). The solution procedure has been evaluated against available data of literature showing good agreement. A parametric study has been conducted, focusing on the combined effects of important parameters included DC voltage, temperature variation, geometrical dimensions and ceramic volume concentration on the dynamic response and stability of the FGM micro-gripper.

Charged micro-particles are widely used as the key components for many electrical applications such as an e-paper, a touch panel, a printer toner and an electronic ink. Among them, the e-paper is an emerging reflective type display using the charged particles that has the advantages of the extremely low power consumption and sunlight readability. To create images on the e-paper, we confine black positively-charged and white negatively-charged particles between bottom and top electrodes and selectively apply the electric field. When the Coulomb force by an applied electric field is greater than the adhesion force between the charged particle and the electrode, the particles' transition happens resulting in the change of color between black and white. Therefore, the adhesion force is a very important factor for designing and estimating e-paper's operation. In this study, we constructed a basic model for particle's transition and an adhesion force equation describing particle's transition with three different forces: electrostatic image force, Van der Waals force and gravitational force. The simulation results showed that the gravitational force is negligible for the interesting range for the charge and the radius, and the adhesion force can be strongly dependent on the particle's charge and radius.

In this study, two new types of micro-grippers in which micro-fingers are actuated by piezoelectric multi-layer benders and stacks are introduced for the manipulation of micrometer-sized objects. First, we constructed a 3-chopstick-mechanism tungsten gripper, which is composed of three chopsticks: two are designed to grip micro-objects, and tile third is used to help grasp and release the objects through overcoming especially electrostatic force among some surface effects including electrostatic, van der Waals forces and surface tension. Second, a 2-chopstick-mechanism silicon micro-gripper that uses an integrated force sensor to control the gripping force was developed. The micro-gripper is composed of a piezoelectric multilayer bender for actuating the gripper fingers, silicon fingertips fabricated by use of silicon-based micromachining, and supplementary supports. The micro-gripper is referred to as a hybrid-type micro-gripper because it is composed of two main components; micro-fingertips fabricated using micromachining technology to integrate a very sensitive force sensor for measuring the gripping force, and piezoelectric gripper finger actuators that are capable of large gripping forces and moving strokes. The gripping force signal was found to have a sensitivity of 667 N/V. To the design of each of components of both of the grippers. a systematic design approach was applied, which made it possible to establish the functional requirements and design parameters of the micro-grippers. The micro-grippers were installed on a manual manipulator to assess its performance in tasks such as moving micro-objects from one position to a desired position. The experiment showed that the micro-grippers function effectively.
