A new MR cylinder with built-in valves using Magneto - Rheological fluid (MR valve) is proposed for fluid power control systems. The MR fluid is a newly developed functional fluid whose obvious viscosity is controlled by the applied magnetic field intensity. This MR cylinder, which is composed of cylinder with small clearance and piston with electromagnet, has the characteristics of simple, compact and reliable structure. This paper presents a method to control the pressure of MR cylinder by using Generalized Predictive Control (GPC) algorithm. The differential pressure is controlled by applying magnetic field intensity to MR fluid. The use of GPC controller is to generate a control sequence by minimizing a cost function in such a way that the future system output is driven close to reference over finite prediction horizons. Experimental results from real time control using GPC method compared with conventional PID control method are also shown in this paper.
We investigated the energistics of the physiological heart model by comparing predictive indexes of the myocardial oxygen consumption (MOC), such as tension-time index (R), tension-time or force-time inteual (FTI), rate-pressure product (RPP), pressure-work index, and systolic pressure-volume area (PVA) when using the electro-hydraulic left ventricular device (LVAD). We developed the model of LVAD incorporated the closed-loop cardiovascular system with a baroreceptor which can control heart rate and time-varying elastance of left and right ventricles. On considering the benefit of the LVAD, the effects of various operation modes, especially timing of assistance, were evaluated using this coupled computer model. Overall results of the computer simulation shows that our LVAD can unload the ischemic (less contractile) heart by decreasing the MU and increasing coronary flow. Because the pump ejection at the end diastolic phase of the natural heart may increase the afterload of the left ventricle, the control scheme of our LVAD must prohibit ejecting at this time. Since the increment of coronary flow is proportional to the peak aortic pressure after ventricle contraction, the LVAD must eject immediately following the closure of the aortic valve to increase oxygen availability.
The wall shear stress in the vicinity of end-to end anastomoses under steady flow conditions was measured using a flush-mounted hot-film anemometer(FMHFA) probe. The experimental measurements were in good agreement with numerical results except in flow with low Reynolds numbers. The wall shear stress increased proximal to the anastomosis in flow from the Penrose tubing (simulating an artery) to the PTFE: graft. In flow from the PTFE graft to the Penrose tubing, low wall shear stress was observed distal to the anastomosis. Abnormal distributions of wall shear stress in the vicinity of the anastomosis, resulting from the compliance mismatch between the graft and the host artery, might be an important factor of ANFH formation and the graft failure. The present study suggests a correlation between regions of the low wall shear stress and the development of anastomotic neointimal fibrous hyperplasia(ANPH) in end-to-end anastomoses. 30523 T00401030523 ^x Air pressure decay(APD) rate and ultrafiltration rate(UFR) tests were performed on new and saline rinsed dialyzers as well as those roused in patients several times. C-DAK 4000 (Cordis Dow) and CF IS-11 (Baxter Travenol) reused dialyzers obtained from the dialysis clinic were used in the present study. The new dialyzers exhibited a relatively flat APD, whereas saline rinsed and reused dialyzers showed considerable amount of decay. C-DAH dialyzers had a larger APD(11.70

In order to design a diesel engine system and predict its performance, it is necessary to analyze the gas flow of the intake and exhaust system. A gas flow analysis in three-dimensional (3D) format needs a high-resolution workstation and enormous time for analysis. Therefore, the method of characteristics (MOC) was used for a gas flow analysis with a fast calculation time and a low-resolution workstation. An experiment was conducted on a single cylinder diesel engine to measure pressure in cylinder, intake pipe and exhaust pipe. The one-dimensional (1D) gas flow was analyzed under the same conditions as the experiment. The engine speed, valve timing and compression ratio were the same conditions and the intake pressure was inputted as the experimental results. Bent pipe such as an exhaust port that cannot be realized in 1D was omitted. As results of validation, the cylinder pressure showed accuracy, but the exhaust pipe pressure exhibited inaccuracy. This is considered as an error caused by the failure to implement a bent pipe such as an exhaust port. When analyzed in 3D, calculation time required 61 hours more based on a model of this study. In the future, we intend to implement a bent pipe that cannot be realized in 1D using 3D and prepare a method to supplement reliability by using 1D-3D coupling.
Recently, the importance of variable displacement piston pump is increasing in industrial world. Especially, most consumers require various range of pressures and flow rates. Pressure compensator is a system controlling flow rate in piston pump at low cost and, therefore, satisfies the need of consumers. However, the system has serious problems, such as response and leakage. The response and leakage are affected by clearance between actuator piston and cylinder, roughness of surface, and spool overlap. In this paper, these effects are investigated experimentally, and optimal clearance and chamfer is obtained. While diameter of cylinder is fixed and diameter of actuator piston is changed in this experiment, response and leakage are measured. Also parameters such as roughness and processing accuracy are changed for piston of fixed clearance. Experimental setup modelled into several parts of actuator piston, cylinder, spool, and swash plate. Input pressure is changed by function generator and proportional valve. The result of this experiment shows that leakage increases very much in proportion to the increase of clearance, and especially leakage occurs enormously when clearance is more than 0.002. The response is not good because as clearance increases leakage increases and as clearance decreases viscous damping effect increases. Accordingly, it is found out that optimal clearance range exists for tile response, within about 0.0012∼0.0014, at this time. Futhermore, the better roughness and geometrical accuracy of actuator piston are, the smaller are leakage and friction. The paper informs that response and leakage are influenced by and geometrical accuracy of actuator piston, roughness of surface, and the clearance between actuator piston and cylinder, and that optimal design of actuator piston in the pressure compensator is possible.
As in the other industrial processes, a nuclear power plant involves a steam relieving process through which condensable steam is discharged and condensed in a subcooled pool. An analysis of steam discharge transients was carried out using the method of characteristics to determine the flow characteristics and dynamic loads of piping that are used for structural design of the piping and its supports. The analysis included not only the steam flow rate but also the flow rates of the air and water which originally exist in the pipe. The analytical model was developed for a uniform pipe with friction through which the flow was discharged into a suppression pool. Including the combinations of system elements such as reservoir, valve and branching pipe lines. The piping flow characteristics and dynamic loads were calculated by varying system pressure, pipe length, and submergence depth. It was found that the dynamic load, water clearing time and water clearing velocity at the water/air interface were dependent not only on the system pressure and temperature but also on the pipe length and submergence depth.

For Safety Assisted Engineering works, real-time simulators have emerged as a mandatory tool among all the key actors involved in the nuclear industry (utilities, designers and safety authorities). EDF, Electricité de France, as the leading worldwide nuclear power plant operator, has a crucial need for efficient and updated simulation tools for training, operating and safety analysis support. This paper will present the work performed at EDF/DT to develop a new generation of engineering simulator to fulfil these tasks. The project is called SiRENE, which is the acronym of Re-hosted Engineering Simulator in French. The project has been economically challenging. Therefore, to benefit from existing tools and experience, the SiRENE project combines: - A part of the process issued from the operating fleet training full-scope simulator. - An improvement of the simulator prediction reliability with the integration of High-Fidelity models, used in Safety Analysis. These High-Fidelity models address Nuclear Steam Supply System code, with CATHARE thermal-hydraulics system code and neutronics, with COCCINELLE code. - And taking advantage of the last generation and improvements of instructor station. The intensive and challenging uses of the new SiRENE engineering simulator are also discussed. The SiRENE simulator has to address different topics such as verification and validation of operating procedures, identification of safety paths, tests of I&C developments or modifications, tests on hydraulics system components (pump, valve etc.), support studies for Probabilistic Safety Analysis (PSA). etc. It also emerges that SiRENE simulator is a valuable tool for self-training of the newcomers in EDF nuclear engineering centers. As a modifiable tool and thanks to a skillful team managing the SiRENE project, specific and adapted modifications can be taken into account very quickly, in order to provide the best answers for our users' specific issues. Finally, the SiRENE simulator, and the associated configurations, has been distributed among the different engineering centers at EDF (DT in Lyon, DIPDE in Marseille and CNEPE in Tours). This distribution highlights a strong synergy and complementarity of the different engineering institutes at EDF, working together for a safer and a more profitable operating fleet.
