Flow rate is one of the important variables for precise motion control and detection of the faults and fluid loss in many hydraulic components and systems. But in many cases, it is not easy to measure it directly. The orifice area of a servo valve by which the fluid flows is one of key factors to monitor the flow rate. In this paper, we have constructed an estimation algorithm for the effective orifice area by using the model of a servo valve cylinder control system and Kalman filter algorithm. Without geometry information about the servo valve, it is shown that the effective orifice area can be estimated by using only displacement and pressure data corrupted with noise. And the effect of the biased sensor data and system parameter errors on the estimation results are discussed. The paper reveals that sensor calibration is important in accurate estimation and plausible parameter data such as oil bulk modulus and actuator volume are acceptable for the estimation without any error. The estimation algorithm can be used as an useful tool for detecting leakage, monitoring malfunction and/or degradation of the system performance.
A one-stage direction and flow control valve was studied theoretically and experimentally. A direction and flow control valve maintains a constant flow rate by changing the spool-orifice area under the variation of valve pressure drop, since the spool-orifice area is varied by the action of flowforces on the spool. A direction and flow control valve has the advantage of simple and low-cost structure compared to a conventional flow control valve utilizing a pressure regulating spool which regulates the pressure drop caused by flow through the metering orifice. The static and dynamic characteristics of a one-stage direction and flow control valve was analyzed. Experimental results on the flow control characteristics of the manufactured valve show satisfactory agreement with simulation results.
The spool displacement of directional control valve can be considered as the standard signal to measure the bandwidth frequency of a directional control valve. When the spool displacement is not available, the metering-orifice system is implemented in this research as an alternative way of measuring the 90 degrees phase bandwidth frequency of the hydraulic directional control valve. The inertia effect on the transmission line oil induces the phase lead of the valve load pressure when compared with the phase of spool displacement. The capacitance effect of the oil induces the phase lag of the valve load pressure. The phase of the load pressure can be adjusted to be the same as that of the spool displacement by controlling the opening area of the metering orifice. A series of experiments were conducted to verify the effectiveness of the metering orifice. The 90 degrees phase bandwidth frequency measured from the valve load pressure was significantly deviated in some cases from the frequency of the spool displacement. The metering orifice was hard to be applied to measure the -90 degrees phase bandwidth frequency of the high precision.
The constant flow control valve is used to control the flow rate of heating water in the large apartment complex and buildings. It is important to have similar heating flow rate in the apartments, even though the apartment is top or bottom floors. To achieve those purposes, the constant flow control valve was developed. The performance of this control valve is effected by hole area and discharge coefficients of the cartridge holes. The discharge coefficients of orifice hole in the cartridge were testes with various sizes of holes and various flow direction in the holes. The discharge coefficients decreased as the hole size increased due to the collision at the cartridge wall of water jet. The effects of the flow direction at the hole were not significant on the discharge coefficients.
The spool displacement of a directional control valve can be considered as the standard signal for the measurement of its bandwidth frequency. When the spool displacement is not available, the metering-orifice system is suggested in this study as an alternative way to measure the - 3 dB amplitude-ratio bandwidth frequency of the hydraulic directional-control valve. The amplitude ratio of the metering-orifice pressure can be adjusted to equal that of the spool displacement through the controlling of the metering-orifice opening area. A series of experiments were conducted to verify the effectiveness of the metering-orifice system. The metering orifice was confirmed as adequate for the measurement of the - 3 dB amplitude-ratio bandwidth frequency.
The poppet valve had used every field area due to high quality of leakage property and response characteristic. But this valve still has terrible disadvantage that is self-exited vibration. This problem affects stability of total system and raises noise. The researcher tries to reduce that self-exited vibration when valve was designed. The stability discriminant is the typical study to improve the performance of the poppet valve. This paper concerns about stability discriminant that uses poppet valve with a drain orifice. At the first, the mathematical model is computed from poppet valve. After that, the limitation of stability is calculated that based on Nyquist criterion. At the final, the stability discriminant is selected in each condition and the graph that shows stability in the system is drown by dimensionless quantity.
The present study investigated design parameters of shunt valves and anti-siphon device used to treat patients with hydrocephalus. The shunt valve controls drainage of cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) through passive deflection of a thin and small diaphragm. The anti-siphon device(ASD) is optionally connected to the valve to prevent overdrainage when the patients are in the standing position. The major design parameters influencing pressure-flow characteristics of the shunt valve were analyzed using ANSYS structural program. Experiments were performed on the commercially available valves and showed good agreements with the computer simulation. The results of the study indicated that predeflection of the shunt valve diaphragm is an important design parameter to determine the opening pressure of the valve. The predeflection was found to depend on the diaphragm tip height and could be adjusted by the diaphragm thickness and its elastic modulus. The major design parameters of the ASD were found to be the clearance (gap height) between the thin diaphragm and the flow orifice. Besides the gap height, the opening pressure of the ASD could be adjusted by the diaphragm thickness, its elastic modulus, area ratio of the diaphragm to the flow orifice. Based on the numerical simulation which considered the increased subcutaneous pressure introduced by the tissue capsule pressure on the implanted shunt valve system, optimum design parameters were proposed for the ASD.
Energy consumption of conventional hydraulic excavators controlled by MCV is considerable when negative load is applied because the meter orifice and meter-out orifice are machined in one spool. Therefore, IMV is introduced to save energy use of hydraulic excavators, but existing hydraulic excavators have various advantages so it is difficult to make a clear comparison. In this study, we compare the use of an existing MCV excavator that has many advantages such as negative control, and IMV for boom up and down operation, and if IMV is used to save energy, we will examine the cause. If possible, for comparability under the same conditions, both systems use pressure balance valves to minimize power consumption when not using power in the actuator. The orifice area at each notch of each valve is calculated, and energy saving is verified by comparing the two systems through simulation.
As environmental problems are important, automotive industries are developing various techniques to prevent air pollution. One of these is Positive Crankcase Ventilation (PCV) system. It removes blowby gas which includes about 30% hydrocarbon of total generated quantity. In this system, a PCV valve is attached in a manifold suction tube to control the flow rate of blowby gas which generates differently according to various operating conditions of an automotive engine. As this valve is very important, designers are feeling to design it because of both small size and high velocity. For this reason, we numerically investigated to understand both spool dynamic motion and internal fluid flow characteristics. As the results, spool dynamic characteristics, i.e. displacement, velocity, acting force, increase in direct proportion to the magnitude of differential pressure and indicate periodic oscillating motions. And, the velocity at the orifice region decreases according to the increase of differential pressure because of energy loss which is caused by the sudden decrease of flow area at the orifice region and the increase of flow volume in the front of spool head. Finally, the mass flow rate at the outlet decreases with the increase of spool displacement. We expect that PCV valve designers can easily understand fluid flow inside a PCV valve with our visual information for their help.
A heart supplies bloods of about 15, 000 liters to each human organ in a day. A normal function of heart valves is necessary to this act of heart. The disease of heart valve develops to a narrowness of a closure, resulting in an abnormal circulation of bloods. In an attempt to eliminate the affliction of heart valves, the operation method to repair with artificial heart valves has been developed and saved numerous patients over past 30 years. This replacement operation has been performed since early 1960`s in Korea, but all the artificial heart valves used are imported from abroad with very high costs until recent years. The artificial heart valve using pyrolytic carbon has been developed at KAIST, which was proved to be stable in the mechanical performance and durability. Therefore, the in viva performance of this valve was examined through animal tests. The artificial heart valves used in this study are tilting disc type valves, in which the disc were made of graphite coated with pyrolytic carbon and the cages were made of titanium. In viva testings of these valves were performed in 12 dogs, in which right ventriculo-pulmonary arterial [Croup I] or inter-aortic [Croup IV] valved conduit was implanted using polytetrafluoroethylene conduits containing KAIST valve and aortic valve [Group II] or pulmonary valve [Croup III] was replaced by a KAIST valve with a 21mm or 19mm tissue annulus diameter. In group I and II, pre-and post-operative transvalvular pressure gradient was measured and compared with other prosthetic valves. During post operative period laboratory examination was performed including hemoglobin, hematocrit, red cell count, white cell, lactic acid dehydrogenase and platelet. The eight surviving dogs were sacrificed and autopsy was performed at 2, 6, and 8 weeks. KAIST valve has low transvalvular gradient and relatively high orifice area. Average ventriculo-aortic peak systolic transvalvular gradient was 14 mmHg in 21 mm valve and 19 mmHg in 19 mm valve. The valve has slight intravascular hemolysis effect. Thrombogenic effect of low polishing quality and eddy currents around small orifice is high. The valve has vulnerability of disc movement. These animal tests suggest that the improvement of the heart valve design, surface polishing state and prescription methods.
