  • Effect of various fractions from the roots of Patrinia scabiosaefolia (Valerianaceae) and whole plants of Melandryum firmum (Caryophyllaceae) on enzyme activities in mice was investigated. The butanol fractions from both plants caused a significant elevation of serum transaminase activities when administered intraperitoneally, but did not, orally. Prolonged exposure by oral administration of both plants elevated hepatic cytochrome p-450 content, indicating the induction of drug metabolizing enzymes in liver.

  • 'Pae Jang (敗醬)' is one of Chinese crude drugs used mainly as a edema, abdominal pain and hemoptysis, etc. With regard to the botanical origin of 'Pae Jang', it has been considered to be Patrinia scabiosaefolia of Valerianaceae, but there has never been studied pharmacognostically. To clarify the botanical origin of the 'Pae Jang', we studied on the anatomical characteristics of the roots of three species growing in Korea. Through our studies, the botanical origin of 'Pae Jang' from Korea was proved to be the under ground portions of Patrinia scabiosaefolia and Patrinia villosa.

  • During the biological screening of Chinese drugs, it was found that alcoholic extract of the roots of Patrinia scabiosaefolia (Valerianaceae) caused a significant prolongation of hexobarbital-induced sleeping time and elevation of serum transaminase activities accompanied by severe histopathological changes in the hepatic tissues in mice on three day pretreatments. The systematic fractionation of the methanol extract monitoring by bioassay led to isolation of toxic saponins such as $3-O-{\alpha}-{_L}-arabinopyranosyl$ hederagenin $28-O-{\beta}-{_D}-glucopyranosyl\;(1{\rightarrow}6)-{\beta}-{_D}-glucopyranoside$ and its 2'-acetate and $3-O-{\beta}-{_D}-glucopyranosyl\;(1{\rightarrow}3)-{\alpha}-{_L}-rhamnopyranosyl\;(1{\rightarrow}2)-{\alpha}-{_L}-arabinopyranosyl$ oleanolic acid and its $28-O-{\beta}-{_D}-glucopyranosyl\;(1{\rightarrow}6)-{\beta}-{_D}-glucopyranoside$.

  • The genus Patrinia, belonging to the Valerianaceae family, includes ca. 20 species of herbaceous plants with yellow or white flowers, distributed in Korea, China, Siberia, and Japan. Among them, P. scabiosaefolia (yellow Patrinia), P. saniculaefolia, P. villosa (white Patrinia), and P. rupestris are found in Korea. Several members of this genus have long been used in folk medicine for the treatment of inflammation, wound healing, ascetics, and abdominal pain after childbirth. Thus far, ca. 217 constituents, namely flavonoids, iridoids, triterpenes, saponins, and others have been identified in this genus. Crude extract and isolated compounds have been found to exhibit anticancer, anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, antifungal, antibacterial, cytotoxic activities, lending support to the rationale behind several of its traditional uses. The present review compiles information concerning the phytochemistry and biological activities of Patrinia, with particular emphasis on P. villosa, as studied by our research group.

  • The study was conducted to investigate the effect of cultivation area with different sea levels on essential oil in the root of Valeriana fauriei var. dasycarpa Hara (Valerianaceae). The total content of the essential oil was not different in various cultivation area, however, its composition varied. The major components were bornyl acetate and sesquiterpene alcohol in three cultivation areas. Among the valepotrate components known as major active components in Europe and Nepal valerian, valtrate was detected in a small amount, but the quantity was not changed.

  • Two oleanane-type triterpenes (1, 2) and their glycosides (4-6), and one ursane-type triterpene (3) have been isolated from a methanolic extract of Patrinia saniculaefolia Hemsley (Valerianaceae) through repeated silica gel and reversed-phase C-18 column chromatography. Their chemical structures were determined as oleanolic acid (1), oleanonic acid (2), 23-hydroxyursolic acid (3), 3-O-${\alpha}$-L-arabinopyranosyl-oleanolic acid (4), 3-O-${\beta}$-D-glucopyranosyl-oleanolic acid (5), and oleanolic acid 3-O-[${\alpha}$-D-xylopyranosyl-($1{\rightarrow}3$)-${\beta}$-D-glucuronopyranoside-6-O-butyl-ester] (6) on the basis of their MS, $^1H$-, and $^{13}C$-NMR spectral data. All compounds were isolated from the whole plant of the P. saniculaefolia for the first time. These compounds were examined for their anti-complement activity against the classical pathway of the complement system. Among them, compounds 1 - 3 exhibited anti-complement activity with $IC_{50}$ values of 470.1, 212.2, and 121.0 ${\mu}M$, respectively, whereas compounds 4 - 6 were inactive. These results suggest that the carbonyl or hydroxy group at C-3 in the oleananeand/or ursane-triterpenes are important for the anti-complement activity against the classical pathway.
