The suction nozzle of a vacuum cleaner was modified to enhance the power performance and to reduce the airflow-induced acoustic noise. The suction power efficiencies of the vacuum cleaner were measured for various nozzles; (1) original nozzle, (2) original nozzle with modified trench height, (3) original nozzle with modified connecting chamber, and (4) a combination of (2) and (3). In addition, the suction pressure and sound pressure level around the suction nozzle were measured to validate the reduction of acoustic noise. The power efficiency and mean suction pressure increased when the trench height of the suction nozzle was increased. This was attributed to the suppression of the flow separation in the suction channel. Modification of the connecting chamber in the original nozzle, which had an abrupt contraction from a rectangular chamber into a circular pipe, into a smooth converging contraction substantially improved the suction flow into the connecting pipe. When both modifications were applied simultaneously, the resulting suction nozzle was more effective from the viewpoints of aerodynamic power increase and sound pressure level reduction.
The flow structure inside the intake head greatly affects the working efficiency of a vacuum cleaner such as suction power and aero-acoustic noise. In this study, the flow inside intake heads of a vacuum cleaner was investigated using qualitative flow visualization and quantitative PIV (Particle Image Velocimetry) techniques. The aerodynamic power, suction efficiency and noise level of the intake heads were also measured. In order to improve the performance of the vacuum cleaner, inner structure of the flow paths of the intake head, such as trench height and shape of connection chamber were modified. The flow structures of modified intake heads were compared with that of the original intake head. The aero-acoustic noise caused by flow separation was reduced and the suction efficiency was also changed due to flow path modification of intake head. In this paper, the variations of flow fields for different intake heads are presented and discussed together with results of aerodynamic power, suction efficiency and noise level.
Vacuum suction is applied to the mold during pouring in the inclined gravity die casting to remove defects such as misrun and gas porosity in the brake master cylinder. Casting defects are observed after solidification and their cause is analyzed by using the calculated results with commercial solidification and flow analysis code(ZCAST). The optimum vacuum suction is -2 cmHg, and when the start time of vacuum suction is 3 seconds after pouring, better filled result is obtained by holding it for 15 seconds. Reproducibility test under the optimum conditions attained from the above pouring tests is performed, and it is confirmed that these pouring conditions can be applied to the mass production immediately.
A vacuum metering device for garlic seeds was developed, and its metering performance was tested according to the design factors. Three design factors were as follows: suction surface diameter (Edge), suction surface curvature (Type), and guide height (Guide). The suction surface curvature represents the distance between the center of the grooved suction plate and the bottom of suction plate. The metering rate and multiple metering rate were analyzed as the metering performance of the developed device with two varieties of garlic seeds: Namhae (warm region-adapted garlic) and Uiseong (cold region-adapted garlic). The best metering performance for the Namhae seeds were found with the following conditions: An Edge, Guide and Type of 40, 4, and 35 mm, respectively. In the case of the Uiseong seeds, the best conditions were as follows: An Edge, Guide and Type of 35, 4, and 30 mm, respectively. The guide height was found to be the most influential design factor on the metering performance of the metering rate and multiple rate for both Namhae seeds and Uiseong seeds. Additionally, the interaction between the area of the suction surface and the curvature of the suction surface had some effects on the multiple rate for the Uiseong seeds. It was concluded that the guide height should be 4 mm or higher so that more than 90% of the metering rate could be achieved for the tested garlic seeds with the developed metering device.
This study explored the fluid transfer characteristics of simultaneous pneumatic blasting, plasma blasting, and vacuum suction (the PPV method), and assessed their effect. Chemical oxidation-an established soil remediation method-was compared as a control. Electrical resistivity surveys found that PPV reduced resistivity by about 1.5-2.5 times compared with the control group, indicating that it increased the diffusion of fluid between the injection and suction wells. Injection and suction tests comparing the injection flow rate, initial suction flow rate time, and suction flow rate showed that the PPV method offered an improvement over the existing method. Slug tests revealed that PPV increased the permeability coefficient by a greater amount than that by the control method. This study qualitatively and quantitatively confirmed that the PPV method clearly improves injection and suction efficiency by accelerating cracks in the ground and improving water permeability compared with the established chemical oxidation method.

In this paper, an optical sensing system has been developed to detect the dust in vacuum cleaner. The system works well through self-tuning mechanism, even though there are systemic variance and characteristic change which is caused by the pollution on the surface of the optical elements. Using the developed sensing system, a novel suction power control system has been proposed, which is able to be used for a long time.

Suction Drain Method is soft ground improvement technique, in which a vacuum pressure can be directly applied to the Vertical Drain Board to promote consolidation and strengthening the soft ground. This method does not require a surcharge load, different to embankment or vertical drain method. In this study, Using Suction-CAIN program, which optimize th Suction Drain method, estimate validity Suction Drain method on deep soft ground
Suction transfer system with air suctioning is widely used and continuously developed in production automation. Air suctioning has some drawbacks in use. To generate vacuum in the suction cup with air suctioning, complex of mechanical component like as air compressor, air tube, air value is need, and it needs continuous air supply. And if the failure of the suction in a cup in the multi-suction cup system which is generally used occurs then the suctions of all of the cup will be fail. To overcome these drawbacks, new suction mechanism which uses permanent magnet for the movement of the suction cup is proposed. The proposed mechanism activates each suction cup separately, so the air leakage of a cup is not critical. The proposed suction system wasdesigned and fabricated in real world. With some experiments, the usability and performance of the suction mechanism was proved. The strong points of the proposed suction mechanism are simple structure, high energy efficiency, and discrete energy supply.

Pick-and-place systems using suction cups have been being widely used and continuously developed in production automation. There are, however, some drawbacks in constructing such systems. One of them is that it generates high level noise due to air compressors. And the system must have complex constitutions of mechanical component such as air compressors, air tubes, air valves, etc. Moreover, it needs continuous air supply to maintain vacuum in suction cups. If there is a failure in any suction cup, the total suction system may fail owing to air leakage. To overcome these drawbacks, we propose PMS (Permanent Magnet Suction) mechanism which has permanent magnets for vacuuming suction cups with no air compressor. The basic concept of PMS mechanism is to rotate permanent magnets with fixed angle. Simple rotation of permanent magnets changes the direction of the magnetic force applied at the suction cups. Since each suction cup has no direct connection with any of the others, the air leakage at one suction cup is not critical. The proposed suction mechanism was designed and fabricated. With some experiments, the feasibility and performance of the PMS mechanism was shown. The strong points of the PMS mechanism are in its simple structure, generating low noise, high energy efficiency, and no need of continuous energy supply.

Suction Drain Method is soft ground improvement technique, in which a vacuum pressure can be directly applied to the Vertical Drain Board to promote consolidation and strengthening the soft ground. This method does not require a surcharge load, different to embankment or Preloading Method. In this study, ground improvement efficiency of suction drain method was estimated when duplex loading pressure with vacuum and pressure. During suction drain method process, surface settlement and pore pressure were monitored, and cone resistance test as well as water content were also measured after the completion of Suction Drain Method treatment.
