Utilizing vacuum bagging process to enhance bond strength between FRP sheets and concrete

  • This paper investigates the effect of utilizing vacuum bagging process to enhance the bond behavior between fiber reinforced polymer (FRP) composites and concrete substrate. Sixty specimens were prepared and tested using double-shear bond test. The effect of various parameters such as vacuum, fiber type, and FRP sheet length and width on the bond strength were investigated. The experimental results revealed that utilizing vacuum leads to improve the bond behavior between FRP composites and concrete. Both the ultimate bond forces and the maximum displacements were enhanced when applying the vacuum which leads to reduction in the amount of FRP materials needed to achieve the required bond strength compared with the un-vacuumed specimens. The efficiency of the enhancement in bond behavior due to vacuum highly depends on the fiber type; using carbon fiber showed higher enhancement in the bond strength compared to the glass fiber when vacuum was applied. On the contrary, specimens with glass fiber showed higher enhancement in the maximum slippage compared to specimens with carbon fibers. Utilizing vacuum does not affect the debonding failure modes but lead to increase in the amount of attached concrete on the surface of the debonded FRP sheet.

액상성형공정별 물리적/기계적 특성 비교 평가 (Evaluation of Physical and Mechanical Properties based on Liquid Composite Molding)

  • 오토클레이브 (Autoclave) 성형 공정은 항공산업분야의 복합재 부품 제작에 있어서 매우 안정적이고 중요한 제조방법으로서 자리매김 해왔었지만 오토클레이브가 가진 많은 장점과 함께 단점 또는 제약 사항들을 보여주고 있다. 최근에는 이러한 한계를 극복하기 위하여 다양한 탈 오토클레이브 (OoA, Out-of-Autoclave) 공정들이 연구 개발되고 있는데, 본 연구에서는 탈 오토클레이브 공정 중 하나로서 많은 관심을 받고 있는 액상성형공정 (Liquid Composite Molding)을 사용하여 시편들을 제작하고 이를 오토클레이브 공정으로 제작된 시편과 실험적으로 비교평가하였다. 액상성형공정 중 DB (Double Bagging), CAPRI (Controlled Atmospheric Pressure Resin Infusion) 및 VAP (Vacuum Assisted Process) 공정을 사용하여 시편 제작을 수행하고 내부 기공 함유량, 두께, 유리전이온도, 층간전단강도 및 굽힘강도 시험 평가를 통하여 각 제작 공정에 따른 차이를 확인할 수 있었다. 전체적으로 오토클레이브 성형 시편이 우수한 두께 균일도, 낮은 기공 함유량 및 양호한 기계적 강도 특성을 보였으며, 액상성형공정 중에서는 CAPRI 성형 시편이 DB 및 VAP 성형 시편에 비하여 상대적으로 우수한 특성을 가짐을 확인하였다.

항공기용 복합재 샌드위치부품의 수리시 열간노출에 따른 물성변화에 관한 연구 (A Study for the Characteristic Changes under the Repeated Thermal Exposure in the Process of Repairing Aircraft Sandwich Structures)

  • Autoclave curing using the vacuum bagging method is widely used for the manufacture of advanced composite prepreg airframe structures. Due to increasing use of advanced composites, specific techniques have been developed to repair damaged composite structures. In order to repair the damaged part, it is required that the damaged areas be removed, such as skin and/or honeycomb core, by utilizing the proper method and then repairing the area by laying up prepreg (and core) then curing under vacuum using the vacuum bagging materials. It shall be cured either in an oven or autoclave per the original specification requirements. Delamination can be observed in the sound areas during and/or after a couple times exposure to the elevated curing temperature due to the repeated repair condition. This study was conducted for checking the degree of degradation of properties of the cured parts and delamination between skin prepreg and honeycomb core. Specimens with glass honeycomb sandwich construction and glass/epoxy prepreg were prepared. The specimens were cured 1 to 5 times at $260^{circ}F$ in an autoclave and each additionally exposed 50, 100 and 150 hours in the $260^{circ}F$ oven. Each specimen was tested for tensile strength, compressive strength, flatwise tensile strength and interlaminar shear strength. To monitor the characteristics of the resin itself, the cured resin was tested using DMA and DSC. As a results, the decrease of Tg value were observed in the specific specimen which is exposed over 50 hrs at $260^{circ}F$. This means the change or degradative of resin properties is also related to the decrease of flatwise tensile properties. Accordingly, minimal exposure on the curing temperature is recommended for parts in order to prevent the delation and maintain the better condition.

적층 방법에 따른 복합재의 저온 영역 하에서 정적 강도 변화 (Effect of Fabrication Methods on Static Strength of Polymer Based Composites under the Low Temperature Range)

  • When the wind turbine is used in cold regions, the mechanical properties and dimension stability of the blade will be changed. The proposal of this paper is to test the durability of the blade for wind turbine. It is necessary to select the most comfortable materials and fabrication processes for more stable wind turbine blade in cold regions. To select the most comfortable materials and processes, the static strength has to know through the tensile static tests at the severe condition as cold regions. First, the tensile static specimens made by RIM (Resin injection molding) process & vacuum bagging process with reinforcement materials and resin. Tensile static tests were carried out on three laminate lay-ups (carbon prepreg, carbon fiber dry fabric and glass fiber dry fabric) at different test temperature($24^{\circ}$, $-30^{\circ}$), determining properties such as the mechanical strength, stiffness and strain to failure. At different test temperature, in order to test the tensile strengths of these specimens used the low temperature chamber. Next, the results of this test were compared with each other. Finally, the most comfortable materials and fabrication processes can select based on these results. The results show the changes in the static behavior of three laminate lay-ups at different test temperatures. At low temperatures, the static strengths are higher than the ones at room temperature.

  • Recently, composites have been widely applied in the sporting goods, automobile, aerospace industry. As the use of advanced composites increase, specific techniques have been developed to repair damaged composite structures. In order to repair the damaged part, it is required that the material in the damaged area be removed first by utilizing the proper method, and prepreg be laid up in the area and cured under vacuum using the vacuum bagging materials. In curing process, either in an oven or autoclave is to be delamination can be occurred in the sound areas during and/or after the exposure to the elevated curing temperature in case that the repair process is repeated. Therefore, this study was conducted to evaluate the degree of degradation of properties of the cured parts and how it affects to the delamination phenomenon between laminated skin and honeycomb core.

  • 테이프래핑 구조물은 유도무기의 노즐 구조에 많이 사용되고 있는데 주로 주자직 복합재료를 띠모양으로 이은 다음 이를 맨드럴에 경사각을 가지게 감는 방법으로 제작된다. 적층된 구조물은 고압의 오토클레이브나 하이드로 클레이브에서 성형된다. 테이프래핑 구조물은 적층 형태가 일방향 복합재료의 경우와는 다르며, 제작 시 주어진 경사각을 고려한 해석이 필요하다. 본 연구에서는 테이프래핑 구조물에 대한 해석 기법을 고찰하였다. 먼저 4점 굽힘 실험에 대한 유한요소 해석 결과와 실험 결과를 비교함으로써 테이프래핑 구조물의 모델링 기법의 타당성을 검증하였다. 4점 굽힘 실험의 파단 하중과 이방성 파단 판정식의 결과를 비교함으로써 최적의 이방성 파단 판정식을 확인하였다.

복합재료 부품 표면에 다양한 딤플을 형성하는 성형 방법 (A Study on the Processing Technique to form Various Dimples on the Surface of Composite Parts)

  • 본 연구에서는 공기역학적 또는 열 전달에 유리한 형상인 딤플을 복합재료 제품의 표면에 다수 형성하는 경제적이고도 효과적인 성형방법을 개발하였다. 금형을 이용하여 제품의 표면에 다수의 딤플을 형성시키려면 몰드의 표면에 볼록한 반구형상을 가공하여야 하는데 이렇게 하려면 높은 금형 제작비가 소요된다. 본 연구에서는 다수의 원형 구멍이 뚫린 판재를 이용하여, 이의 표면에 복합재료 스킨을 입히면서 외부에서 압력을 가하여 딤플 형상이 표면에 자연스럽게 형성되도록 하는 방법을 개발하였다. 표면에 다수의 딤플을 갖는 복합재료는 공기저항을 줄이거나 방열효과가 필요한 고속 경기용 자동차의 외장 등으로 널리 응용 될 수 있을 것으로 사료된다.
