This paper describes a volume of fluid(VOF) method, mRHRIC for the simulation of free surface flows around ship hulls and provides its validation against benchmark test cases. The VOF method is developed on the basis of RHRIC method developed by Park et al. that uses high resolution differencing schemes to algebraically preserve both the sharpness of interface and the boundedness of volume fraction. A finite volume method is used to solve the governing equations, while the realizable ${\kappa}-{\varepsilon}$ model is used for turbulence closure. The present numerical results of the resistance performance tests for DTMB5415 and KCS hull forms show a good agreement with available experimental data and those of other free surface methods.

A new numerical scheme for two-phase flows, the Hybrid VOF method has been developed for improved free surface capturing. The present new method is a volume capturing based VOF method coupled with a reinitialization procedure of a Level-set method. For validation, the proposed method is applied to two test cases: spherical bubble rising and dam breaking. The calculated results by using the Hybrid VOF method with the two previously applied VOF formulations are compared with available numerical and experimental data. It is found that the new method provides more accurate results than the two previous ones.
The present paper proposes a coupled volume-of-fluid (VOF) and level-set (LS) method for simulating incompressible two-phase flows that include surface tension effects. The interface of two fluids and its motion are represented by a VOF method designed using high-resolution differencing schemes. This hybrid method couples the VOF method with an LS distancing algorithm in an explicit way to improve the calculation of the normal and curvature of the interface. It is developed based on a rather simple algorithm to be efficient for various practical applications. The accuracy and convergence properties of the method are verified in a simulation of a single gas bubble rising in a three-dimensional flow with a large density ratio.

A new numerical scheme solving two-phase flow, the Hybrid VOF method for improved free surface capturing has been developed by combining a volume capturing VOF method with the Level-Set reinitialization procedure. For validation, the proposed method is applied to 3-D bubble rising problem, dam breaking and the free surface flow around a commercial container ship. The calculated results by using the Hybrid VOF method with the two previously applied VOF formulations are compared with available numerical and experimental data. It is found that the new method provides more reasonable results than the two previous ones.
In this study, the green water phenomena on rectangular shaped structure is numerically simulated by STAR-CCM+ to investigate the flow pattern including the velocity profiles in bubbly water flow. 5 phases of the formation of green water in front of and over the rectangular shaped structure is simulated at the design condition which is scaled down by 1:125 from FPSO operating in GOM. All numerical results are compared with the experimental results performed in a two dimensional wave flume. The water deformation due to the green water are obtained by the high speed CCD camera with employing the shadow graphy technique, which is allowed to take the bubbly water flow into images. A series of image taken by shadow graphy technique is analyzed with MQD method to calculate the velocity in bubbly water flow.

In this study, the turbulent free surface around KVLCC1 employed in the circular motion test simulation is numerically calculated using a commercial CFD(Computational Fluid Dynamics) code, FLUENT. Also, hydrodynamic forces and yaw moments around a ship model are calculated during the steady turning. Numerical simulations of the turbulent flows with free surface around KVLCC1 have been carried out by use of RANS equation based on calculation of hydrodynamic forces and yaw moments exerted upon the ship hull. Wave elevation is simulated by using the VOF method. VOF method is known as one of the most effective numerical techniques handling two-fluid domains of different density simultaneously. Boundary layer thickness and wake field are changed various yaw velocities of ship model during the steady turning. The calculated hydrodynamic forces are compared with those obtained by model tests.

In this paper, a VOF method called RHRIC (refined high resolution intertace capturing) is introduced for solving the motion of the free surface and applied to the simulation of the advection of rigid interiaces of different shapes and a 20 dam-break problem, which are typical benchmark test cases. The numerical results for the interface advection cases are compared to the analytic solutions, while the available experimental data and other numerical results of various free surface methods for the dam-break problem are provided for the validation of the proposed VOF method. The same simulations were also carried out using the original HRIC scheme and a modified HRIC scheme called MHRIC for comparison. Although the RHRIC uses a simple order scheme, a basis of the original HRIC scheme, lower than the third-order ULTIMATE-QUICKEST used by the MHRIC, it provides an improved accuracy over the two previous HRIC methods.

This study is to numerically investigate the characteristics of wave energy variations propagating over impermeable submerged breakwaters with irregular waves. Two-dimensional numerical wave flume based on the VOF method was used. VOF method is the most efficient capable of simulating free surfaces including wave breaking. From the computed frequency spectrum results, wave breaking play important role in ability of the submerged breakwaters to dissipate incident wave energy. In case of occurring wave breaking, our analysis shows that wave energy moves to short wave period on one-row impermeable submerged breakwater's lee side and is widely distributed not having peak period on two- row impermeable submerged breakwater's lee side.
This study presents a combined experimental and numerical effort to investigate experimentally and numerically the Bragg reflection of sinusoidal waves due to trapezoidal submerged porous breakwaters. Numerical predictions of the study are verified by comparing to laboratory measurements. In the numerical model, the flow in porous structures is described by the spatially averaged Navier-Stokes equations and the volume of fluid method is employed to track the free surface displacements. Numerical solutions are agree well with laboratory measurements. The reflection coefficients of porous structures are smaller than those of non-porous structures and become stronger in proportion to the increase of number of submerged breakwaters.
