  • Intensive studies have been made in the area of IPTV VOD server. The basic goal of the study is to find an efficient mechanism to allow maximum number of users under the limited resources such as Buffer utilization, disk performance and network bandwidth. The overlay multicast that has been recently presented as an alternative for the IP multicast has been getting much persuasion by the system resource and the network bandwidth and the advancement of the network cost. we propose a efficient overlay multi_casting network policy for multimedia services with multi media partition storage. Simulation results show that the rate of service number and service time of proposed scheme are about 23% performance improved than that of traditional methods. This implies that our method can allow much more users for given resources.

  • After starting digital terrestrial broadcasting, there have been a number oftrials to provide new services like data broadcasting on a spare bandwidth of a DTV channel. Recently, the Push-VOD service, which provides A/V contents on that bandwidth, gets more attention and is being standardized as NRT(Non-Real-Time) by ATSC. However, it is highly probable that the contents transmitted in this way contain many errors due to the DTV receiving environment. Thus, in order to improve the reliability of transmission, the contents should be transmitted repeatedly several times, considering the unidirectional property of DTV terrestrial network. In this paper, we propose a method to calculate the optimal number of repetitions to transmit each contents in a way that minimizes the number of errors occured, when trying to transmit several contents to the receiver in a restricted time, using Markov-chain modeling and dynamic programming approach.

  • Real time multimedia data services have been made possible by the rapid development of the computer and internet technology. Based on the technology, Many multimedia system developer try to use VOD(Video on Demand) and GVA technologies for distance education. However the system has mainly been developed to provide the video screen of good quality in real time and to compose contents efficiently. Not many researches and developments have been made for providing the users that is taking distance education with various types of service using VOD and GVA. Therefore In this paper we have designed and implemented an active on-demand multimedia service system to improve user-side service quality in distance education using VOD and GVA service. The on-demand multimedia service system can prominently help users to save the time and effort to search and select the studying data by this paper enables off-line search functions through E-mail and periodical current awareness service supported by PUSH technology, user oriented information booking supported by SDI service and feedback service.

  • Recently, although the requirement of quality of VOD content has been transferred upto the class of HD, conventional management systems characterized by OS dependency are truly limited in quality of video image, stability, and compatibility of network environments. In addition most of the content management systems realize very limited capabilities for the real affairs of content management and distribution services in such an OS dependent environment. In this paper, we propose a new scheme of HD-Class VOD Content Management System to solve these problems. We design and implement the proposed system based on open sources by using H.264 video compression method. The proposed system offers high quality content management method based on opened systems and independent on-line distribution method so that it can be realized as an integrated management scheme for VOD contents. Moreover, our system solves the problems of occasional cutting-down video, small screen, and poor image quality that exist in the conventional wmv-type CMS. According to the result of performance evaluation, our system maintains sufficient performance and tolerence for the case of large scale HD content operations or fabrications. We expect that the proposed integrated DB scheme will especially be effective when the content management applications are changed from Internet Web environments to mobile terminal environments.

  • Recent advances in communication and multimedia technologies make it possible to provide video-on-demand(VOD) services and people can access video servers over the Internet at any time using their electronic devices, such as PDA, mobile phone and digital TV. Each device has different processing capabilities, energy budgets, display sizes and network connectivities. To support such diverse devices, multiple versions of videos are needed to meet users' requests. In general cases, VOD servers cannot store all the versions of videos due to the storage limitation. When a device requests a stored version, the server can send the appropriate version immediately, but when the requested version is not stored, the server first converts some stored version to the requested version, and then sends it to the client. We call this conversion process transcoding. If transcoding occurs frequently in a VOD server, the CPU resource of the server becomes insufficient to response to clients. Thus, to admit as many requests as possible, we need to maximize the CPU availability. In this paper, we propose a new algorithm to select versions from those stored on disk using a branch and bound technique to maximize the CPU availability. We also explore the impact of these storage management policies on streaming to heterogeneous users.

  • In this paper, we provide a design of DAVIC VOD service system with proxy servers which perform caching of video streams. Proxy servers are placed between a service provider system and service consumer systems. They provide video services to consumers on behalf of the service provider, therefore they reduce the loads of service providers and network. The operation of a proxy server depends on whether the requested program is in its storage. If this is the case, the prosy servere takes all the controls, but if the proxy does not have the program, it forwards the service request the proxy server takes all the controls, but if the prosy does not have the program, it forwards the service request to a service provider. While the service provider system provides the program to the consumer, the proxy copies and caches the program. The proxy server executes cache replacement, if necessary. We show by simultion that the LFU is the most efficiency caching replacement algorithm among the typical algorithms such as LRU, LFU, FIFO.

  • In VOD systems the number of channels available to a video server is limited since the number of channels, the video server can support, is determined by the communication bandwidth of the video server. Multicast techniques such as batching, patching and batch-patching have been proposed to reduce I/O demand on the video server by sharing multicast data. In this paper, we propose a channel reservation batch-patching technique that first applies the batching technique to hot video requests and then applies the patching technique to the batches of the hot video requests. And the proposed technique reserves a part of the channel capacity of the video server for many hot video requests, so that the hot video requests can be served without defection. The performance of the proposed technique is compared with those of Patching and Batch-Patching techniques in terms of average service latency, defection rate, fairness and frame reduction rate by simulations.

  • In this paper, a von system which is based on current computer technologies is implemented. This von system organizes many personal computers in a local network into a configuration server, storage servers, and clients. To provide reliability, the data is stored using software RAID technology. Also, multimedia services are client-based for efficiency. The software components of this von system are the von configuration software, the von configuration service software, the von management software, and the von service software. Only the von service software runs in the client, while all the others run in the configuration server. The operating system on which the configuration server is run is the Windows NT such that the software executes like the UNIX-daemon process in the Windows NT service manager.
