Linux cluster Server makes a high performance PC cluster system, and provides scalablity and availability as compared with an expensive single server. In this paper, we design and implement a VOD streaming service system to serve video and audio streaming services on the Linux cluster server. Our Streaming server supports the MS Window Media Format based on the RTSP streaming protocol.

Real time multimedia data services have been made possible by the rapid development of the computer and internet technology. Based on the technology, Many multimedia system developer try to use VOD(Video on Demand) and GVA technologies for distance education. However the system has mainly been developed to provide the video screen of good quality in real time and to compose contents efficiently. Not many researches and developments have been made for providing the users that is taking distance education with various types of service using VOD and GVA. Therefore In this paper we have designed and implemented an active on-demand multimedia service system to improve user-side service quality in distance education using VOD and GVA service. The on-demand multimedia service system can prominently help users to save the time and effort to search and select the studying data by this paper enables off-line search functions through E-mail and periodical current awareness service supported by PUSH technology, user oriented information booking supported by SDI service and feedback service.

VOD service provides an additional revenue model for digital broadcasting companies in addition to the existing subscription fees and advertisement-based revenue models. Therefore, each digital broadcasting company develops its own VOD service and performs frequent improvement work. In this circumstance, the developer is seeking to improve the efficiency of the VOD service development. To address the needs of such developers, this study conducted a basic study to apply the feature-oriented analysis model to the development of VOD services. The feature-oriented analysis model is recognized (through a number of case studies) as an effective tool for analyzing the requirements of softwares with the functions that are interconnected organically. In this paper, we developed a feature model of VOD service and designed the primary functions of each feature and the test-cases that can test the these functions, laying the foundation for developing VOD services based on feature-oriented analysis model.

It is generally recognized that Video On Demand (VOD) service will become a promising interactive service in B-ISDN. We consider a hierarchical two level network architecture for VOD service. The first level consists of connected Local Video Servers(LVSs) in which a limited number of high vision programs are stored. The second level has one Central Video Server(CVS) containing all the programs served in the network. The purpose of this paper is to analyze the network traffic and to propose the storage policy for LVSs. For this purpose, we present an analysis of program storage amount in each LVS, transmission traffic volume between LVSs, and link traffic volume between CVS and LVSs, according to changing the related factors such as demand, the number of LVSs is also presented on the basis of the tradeoffs among program storage cost, link traffic cost, and transmission cost.

비디오 서버는 제한된 자원을 이용하여 보다 많은 사용자에게 안정적인 005(Quality of Service)를 제공하는 것이 중요하다. 본 논문에서는 안정적인 QoS를 지원하기 위한 서버 진입 제어에 관한 연구를 클러스터 형태의 VOD 서버에서 수행하였다. 리눅스 환경에서 구축된 VOD 서버의 성능을 분산 저장 노드의 수와 일반 재생 및 고속 재생의 비율을 변화시키며 측정하였다. 측정한 결과를 토대로 클러스터 VOD 서버의 성능 제한의 원인을 분석하고, 그에 따른 대책을 제안한다. 분석된 자료는 클러스터 VOD 서버에서 진입 제어의 기준을 결정하는 변수들로 사용되어 진다.

In a competitive media environment, Internet Protocol television (IPTV) has gained appeal because of its essential characteristics, 'Internet and Interactivity'. Our study aims to explore predictors that affect IPTV-VOD adoption within the context of competing media (i.e., existing multi-channel video programming services, such as cable television and digital broadcasting satellite services). In addition, this study examines if IPTV-VOD functions as a substitute for existing multi-channel services, such as cable television and direct broadcasting satellite services. A self-report survey through face-to-face interviews was conducted in Seoul metropolitan area and other six big cities. Our findings showed that primary factors for adopting an IPTV-VOD are: age of user, subjective importance of terrestial broadcasting services, real-time terrestrial broadcasting services, and other interactive service characteristics, such as time-shifting. Also, IPTV-VOD services were found to be a substitute for existing multi-channel video programming services.

In this paper, we designed and implemented a personal VOD server using multi-thread for the real-time services of video data to the users. The system consists of service manager, disk manager, and network manager. The service manager controls the user admission to the system using the VBR(Variable Bit Rate) characteristics of MPEG (Moving Picture Experts Group) video data. The disk manager provides the functions for VCR-like operations. The disk manager reads blocks from the disk by the size of GOP(Group of Pictures) and buffers the data to the user's thread. The network manager uses TCP/IP for the communication between the server and the client. The communication starts from the client and the VOD server must respond to this request. The implemented personal VOD system shows an acceptable performance.

In this paper, we provide a design of DAVIC VOD service system with proxy servers which perform caching of video streams. Proxy servers are placed between a service provider system and service consumer systems. They provide video services to consumers on behalf of the service provider, therefore they reduce the loads of service providers and network. The operation of a proxy server depends on whether the requested program is in its storage. If this is the case, the prosy servere takes all the controls, but if the proxy does not have the program, it forwards the service request the proxy server takes all the controls, but if the prosy does not have the program, it forwards the service request to a service provider. While the service provider system provides the program to the consumer, the proxy copies and caches the program. The proxy server executes cache replacement, if necessary. We show by simultion that the LFU is the most efficiency caching replacement algorithm among the typical algorithms such as LRU, LFU, FIFO.

초고속인터넷 접속서비스 시장이 성숙 단계에 접어듬으로써 성장세는 급격히 둔화되고 경쟁환경은 심화되는 과정에서 통신사업자들이 기존의 신규가입자 유치 위주의 정책에서 벗어나 초고속인터넷 가입자 인프라를 기반으로 새로운 부가 서비스 및 차별화 된 서비스의 개발을 통해 가입자 확대 및 ARPU(Average Revenue Per Unit)를 중대 시킬 수 있는 수익원 개발이 절실하다. 이러한 상황하에서 통신방송 융합 서비스는 통신사업자에게 기회와 위협이라는 상반된 현상으로 다가오고 있다. TV-based VOD 서비스는 보다 양질의 멀티미디어 서비스를 원하는 고객의 수요와 신규 고객을 유치하고 가입자를 Lock-in 시키며, 타 통신 사업자의 고객을 자사 고객으로 전환시키고자 하는 차별화 전략의 일환으로 도입되기 시작하였고, 또한 ARPU를 증대 시키고 다양한 수익원 개발의 일환으로 인터넷 접속서비스 외에 부가가치를 창출 할 수 있는 Killer Service로서 주목을 받고 있다. TV VOD 사업이 성공적으로 국내 시장에 정착될 경우, 통신사업자에게는 여러 형태의 수익원 발굴이 가능할 것으로 예상된다. 즉 가입비, 월 이용료, 부가 사용료 등과 같은 포괄적인 형태의 가입비가 주된 수익원이 될 것이이며, pay-per-view(PPV) 형태의 이용료 역시 주된 수익원이 될 것이다. 이 외에도 셋톱박스, 홈게이트웨이/서버 등과 같은 단말기의 임대와 판매를 통한 수익 창출방안과 다른 서비스들과 마찬가지로 광고도 중요한 수익원천으로 활용 할 수 있을 것이며 또한 미디어업체 또는 CP(contents provider)를 대상으로, 보안, 인증, 과금, 결제, 회원 관리, 이용정보 제공 서비스 등도 사업자의 수익원으로 활용할 이 있을 것이다. TV-based VOD 서비스는 망 진화에 따른 차세대 초고속인터넷 서비스 기술인 VDSL이나 Advanced 케이블모뎀을 이용 DVD 급 고화질의 TV-based VOD 서비스가 시작되면서 ARPU를 증대 시키고 다양한 수익원 개발의 일환으로 인터넷 접속서비스 외에 부가가치를 창출 할 수 있는 Killer Service로서 VOD서비스가 주목을 받고 있다. TV-based VOD 서비스는 가입자망의 진화 와 밀접하게 연관되어 전개되는 서비스로 Post-ADSL에 대한 예측과 VOD에 서비스에 대한 설문조사 결과를 토대로 하여 예측 한 바에 의하면 Post-ADSL 가입자는 2003년 153만명에서 2004년 444만으로 증가하고 2006년 987만 명에 이를 것으로 전망되고, VOD서비스 가입의향도 16%에서 2006년 34% 까지 증가하는 것으로 나타났다. 따라서 VOD서비스 가입자는 2003년 24만 명에서 2004년 98만으로 증가하고 2006년 335만 명으로 증가하는 것으로 예측되었다.
