VOD(video on demand) is a video service by users' order, that is, a video service on demand. That means the users can select and watch the video content that has been saved on sewer, out of broadcasting in the usual process like TV. At present the client of VOD system bases on PC. As the PC-based client uses the software MPEG decoder, the main processor specification has an effect on the capacity. Also people, who don't know how to use their PC, cannot be provided the VOD service. The purpose of this paper is to show the process of the development the VOD client system Into the embedded type with hardware MPEG-4 decoder. The main processor is the SC1200 of x86 Family in National Semiconductor with a built-in video processor and the memory is 128Mbyte SDRAM. Also, in order that the VOD service can be provided using the Internet, the Ethernet controller is included. As the hardware MPEG-4 decoder is used in the embedded VOD client system, which is developed, it can make the low capacity of the main processor. Therefore it is able to be developed as a low-price system. The embedded VOD client system is easy for anyone to control easily with the remote control and can be played through TV.

The study aims to construct a system which can provide multimedia materials, specifically, digitalized video and audio materials on the internet. To accomplish this objective, it investigates technology on constructing a VOD/AOD system, current situations on video and audio data management in domestic and internatinal broadcasting institution and information centers. The study proposes a VOD/AOD system which can effectively manage and disseminate these materials on the internet.

In ubiquitous spaces, a user wants to be provided with a VOD service while moving one space to another freely. Since the traditional VOD system is dependent on user location, the VOD server transmits video data to a single client during a session. If the user moves to another space, he/she should close the old session and make a new request for the same video. However, the location-aware VOD system supports user mobility by closing and opening the session automatically. That is, the VOD system automatically perceives the movement of a user and allows the server to change the data flow so that a client near the user can receive the video data. This paper proposes a location-aware VOD service architecture and a session handoff scheme to provide a mobile user with continuous video delivery and implements a location-aware VOD prototype system based on Jini and Java. In experiment, we show that the proposed handoff scheme has a smaller handoff delay than the other handoff scheme.

기존의 VOD 서비스는 machine에 기반한 서비스를 제공해 왔다. 사용자의 이동을 고려하지 않았던 것이다. 사용자의 이동에 따른 VOD 서비스를 위해서는 Location-Awareness와 사용자수준의 hand-off를 지원하는 기법이 필요하다. 위치인식기술은 Hardware 센서를 포함하므로 본 논문에서는 application level에서 사용자의 이동성을 지원하는 기법을 제안하고 간단한 prototype 시스템을 구현한다. 이를 위해서 코드 자체가 이동하는 지니 기술의 Plug & Work 개념을 활용하였다. 구현된 시스템은 사용자의 이동에 따라서 서비스가 이동하여 지속적인 VOD서비스를 제공해 줄수 있다.

As the nonlinear viewing patterns are getting generalized, the needs for VOD service of consumers are increasing in TV, webTV. But today's VOD system is all automated, except the part for posting contents. This study proposes the method for automation of the content posting. For this we analyzed the broadcast program structures by genre in order to detect the transition point between the advertisement and the contents. It was found that regular black frames were set in the transition during fade in and out. We propose an efficient approach to automatically detect the black frames using RGB values of each frame that enable VOD content posting and replace an advertisement in VOD service.

본 논문은 VOD 시스템에서 QoS를 보장해 주기 위한 흐름 제어 기법을 제안하고 실제 구현된 VOD 시스템에서 제안된 알고리즘을 적용하고 성능을 측정하였다. 기존의 버퍼를 관리하는 Leaky Bucket 알고리즘과 패킷의 손실률에 기반한 네트워크의 상태를 동시에 고려해서 클라이언트와 서버간에 전송 속도를 제어한다. 즉, 시간에 따라 변화하는 네트워크의 상태를 클라이너트 버퍼 관리에 반영해줌으로써 클라이언트 버퍼의 오버플로우 및 언더 플로우를 방지하고 QoS를 보장한다.

Recently, VOD market is getting increased and most of public, educational organization, enterprises are providing service as content managing system of WMV standard subordinated to Window OS of Microsoft company. VOD CMS of WMV standard have problem that frequent cut-off, small-size of screen, and image quality which is also chronic problem. In order to solve this problem, technology solving the problem has developed through minimization of buffering time, screen size, high quality sound, and high quality image by image codec and streaming engine which is H. 264. But there are still a problem that systematic management of contents or distribution is difficult. This study expected that there would be a effect preoccupying significant stand of world wide H.264 high quality image mobile VOD managing market by securing domestic on-line VOD contents integrated managing technology by designing system for image VOD contents management having a limit in wmv market and combining H.264 which is new technology.

As compared with wired network environment, mobile VOD service in wireless network environment is difficult to guarantee the quality of VOD service due to the limitation of the system resources. Moreover, the wireless network has small bandwidth resources and short access range so that has limitations for providing the service to a large number of mobile clients. The limited battery capacity of a mobile device becomes an obstacle to mobile clients for enjoying VOD service for a long time. Therefore, these drawbacks should be considered in developing mobile VOD applications. This paper proposes a new technique for improving QoS of mobile VOD service by jointly use of broadcasting technique, which can provide VOD service to a large number of mobile clients simultaneously, and bursty communication technique, which can reduce the power consumption of a mobile device. With having these two techniques, streaming data are divided into segments, each of which is grouped into a particular packet and then transmitted at a time in the busty communication manner. In the performance evaluation, the power consumption on WNIC of a mobile device can be reduced by over 80%, and the initial service delay can be reduced in proportion to the number of channels compared with the existing staggered broadcasting technique.

VOD 시스템이 상업적으로 성공하기 위해서는 많은 사용자에게 우수한 질의 다양한 컨텐츠를 스트리밍 서비스하는 것이 중요하다. 최근 대규모의 사용자와 사용자들의 다양한 요구를 만족시키기 위하여 클러스터 서버 환경에서의 VOD 시스템이 연구되고 있다. 본 논문에서는 이질적인 클라이언트 플랫폼 사용자들의 모든 요청을 지원하기 위한 통합 VOD 시스템을 제안한다. 제안된 시스템은 고화질의 WMV 미디어와 표준 수준의 미디어들에 대한 스트리밍 서비스를 제공한다. 또한, 무선 네트워크 환경의 사용자들을 위한 네트워크 적응적 스트리밍 미디어 서비스를 제공하기위한 방안을 제시한다.

본 논문에서는 클러스터에 기반한 주문형 비디오 (VOD: Video On Demand) 시스템에서의 QoS (Quality of Service) 아키텍처를 제안한다. 제안하는 QoS 아키텍처는 IP 네트웍상에서 사용자에게 다양한 서비스 질의 선택과, 선택한 질의 보장을 제공하며, 클러스트 시스템의 자원관리를 통해 서버의 효율을 극대화 시킨다. 클러스터 VOD 시스템의 QoS 아키텍처는 사용자 요구의 협상을 위한 Weighted Price 함수와 요구분배 기법인 Max-min 함수를 이용하여 사용자에게 제공하는 QoS의 수준을 높여주고, 저장 서버들간의 부하균등을 통해 효율성을 높인다. QoS 아키텍처 내의 핵심 모듈인 QoS Mapper와 QoS Manager의 성능을 확인 하는 실험을 통하여 사용자에게 서비스되는 QoS 수준이 증가하였음을 확인할 수가 있었고, 저장서버들간의 부하를 효과적으로 분산시켜 VOD 시스템의 동시 사용자수를 증가 시키고, 안정적인 서비스를 할 수 있음을 확인하였다.
