This talk presents the overview of the author's research and development activities on fuzzy inference hardware. We involved it with two distinct approaches. The first approach is to use application specific integrated circuits (ASIC) technology. The fuzzy inference method is directly implemented in silicon. The second approach, which is in its preliminary stage, is to use more conventional microprocessor architecture. Here, we use a quantitative technique used by designer of reduced instruction set computer (RISC) to modify an architecture of a microprocessor. In the ASIC approach, we implemented the most widely used fuzzy inference mechanism directly on silicon. The mechanism is beaded on a max-min compositional rule of inference, and Mandami's method of fuzzy implication. The two VLSI fuzzy inference chips are designed, fabricated, and fully tested. Both used a full-custom CMOS technology. The second and more claborate chip was designed at the University of North Carolina(U C) in cooperation with MCNC. Both VLSI chips had muliple datapaths for rule digital fuzzy inference chips had multiple datapaths for rule evaluation, and they executed multiple fuzzy if-then rules in parallel. The AT & T chip is the first digital fuzzy inference chip in the world. It ran with a 20 MHz clock cycle and achieved an approximately 80.000 Fuzzy Logical inferences Per Second (FLIPS). It stored and executed 16 fuzzy if-then rules. Since it was designed as a proof of concept prototype chip, it had minimal amount of peripheral logic for system integration. UNC/MCNC chip consists of 688,131 transistors of which 476,160 are used for RAM memory. It ran with a 10 MHz clock cycle. The chip has a 3-staged pipeline and initiates a computation of new inference every 64 cycle. This chip achieved an approximately 160,000 FLIPS. The new architecture have the following important improvements from the AT & T chip: Programmable rule set memory (RAM). On-chip fuzzification operation by a table lookup method. On-chip defuzzification operation by a centroid method. Reconfigurable architecture for processing two rule formats. RAM/datapath redundancy for higher yield It can store and execute 51 if-then rule of the following format: IF A and B and C and D Then Do E, and Then Do F. With this format, the chip takes four inputs and produces two outputs. By software reconfiguration, it can store and execute 102 if-then rules of the following simpler format using the same datapath: IF A and B Then Do E. With this format the chip takes two inputs and produces one outputs. We have built two VME-bus board systems based on this chip for Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL). The board is now installed in a robot at ORNL. Researchers uses this board for experiment in autonomous robot navigation. The Fuzzy Logic system board places the Fuzzy chip into a VMEbus environment. High level C language functions hide the operational details of the board from the applications programme . The programmer treats rule memories and fuzzification function memories as local structures passed as parameters to the C functions. ASIC fuzzy inference hardware is extremely fast, but they are limited in generality. Many aspects of the design are limited or fixed. We have proposed to designing a are limited or fixed. We have proposed to designing a fuzzy information processor as an application specific processor using a quantitative approach. The quantitative approach was developed by RISC designers. In effect, we are interested in evaluating the effectiveness of a specialized RISC processor for fuzzy information processing. As the first step, we measured the possible speed-up of a fuzzy inference program based on if-then rules by an introduction of specialized instructions, i.e., min and max instructions. The minimum and maximum operations are heavily used in fuzzy logic applications as fuzzy intersection and union. We performed measurements using a MIPS R3000 as a base micropro essor. The initial result is encouraging. We can achieve as high as a 2.5 increase in inference speed if the R3000 had min and max instructions. Also, they are useful for speeding up other fuzzy operations such as bounded product and bounded sum. The embedded processor's main task is to control some device or process. It usually runs a single or a embedded processer to create an embedded processor for fuzzy control is very effective. Table I shows the measured speed of the inference by a MIPS R3000 microprocessor, a fictitious MIPS R3000 microprocessor with min and max instructions, and a UNC/MCNC ASIC fuzzy inference chip. The software that used on microprocessors is a simulator of the ASIC chip. The first row is the computation time in seconds of 6000 inferences using 51 rules where each fuzzy set is represented by an array of 64 elements. The second row is the time required to perform a single inference. The last row is the fuzzy logical inferences per second (FLIPS) measured for ach device. There is a large gap in run time between the ASIC and software approaches even if we resort to a specialized fuzzy microprocessor. As for design time and cost, these two approaches represent two extremes. An ASIC approach is extremely expensive. It is, therefore, an important research topic to design a specialized computing architecture for fuzzy applications that falls between these two extremes both in run time and design time/cost. IEEE 802.15.4 is the one of the protocols for radio communication in a personal area network. Because of low cost and low power communication for IoT communication, it requires the highest optimization level in the implementation. Recently, the studies of location aware algorithm based on IEEE802.15.4 standard has been achieved. Location estimation is performed basically in equal consideration of reference node information and blind node information. However, an error is not calculated in this algorithm despite the fact that the coordinates of the estimated location of the blind node include an error. In this paper, we enhanced a conventual maximum likelihood estimation using weighted coefficient and implement the hardwired location aware engine for small code size and low power consumption. On the field test using test-beds, the suggested hardware based location awareness method results better accuracy by 10 percents and reduces both calculation and memory access by 30 percents, which improves the systems power consumption.

Ti film of lOnm thickness and Co film of 18nm thickness were sequentially e-heam evaporated onto Si (100) substrates. Metal deposited samples were rapidly thermal-annt.aled(KTA) in thr N1 en vironment a t $900^{\circ}C$ for 20 sec. to induce the reversal of metal bilayer, so that $CoSi_{2}$ thin films could be formed. The sheet resistance measured by the 4-point probe was 3.9 $\Omega /\square$This valur was maintained with increase in annealing time upto 150 seconds, showing high thermal stab~lity. Thc XRII spectra idrn tified the silicide film formed on the Si substrate as a $CoSi_{2}$ epitaxial layer. The SKM microgr;iphs showed smooth surface, and the cross-sectional TKM pictures revealed that the layer formed on the Si substrate were composed of two Co-Ti-Si alloy layers and 70nm thick $CoSi_{2}$ epl-layer. The AES analysis indicated that the native oxide on Si subs~rate was removed by TI ar the beginning of the RTA, and Ihcn that Co diffused to clean surface of Si substrate so that epitaxial $CoSi_{2}$ film could bt, formed. In thc rasp of KTA at $700^{\circ}C$. 20sec. followed by $900^{\circ}C$, 20sec., the thin film showed lower sheet resistance, but rough surface and interface owing to $CoSi_{2}$ crystal growth. The application scheme of this $CoSi_{2}$ epilayer to VLSI devices and the thermodynarnic/kinetic mechan~sms of the $CoSi_{2}$ epi-layer formation through the reversal of Co/Ti bdayer were discussed.

The primary goal for developing high performance ATM switching systems is to minimized the probability of cell loss, cell delay and deterioration of throughput. ATM switching element that is the most suitable for this purpose is the shared buffer memory switch executed by common random access memory and control logic. Since it is difficult to manufacture VLIS(Very Large Scale Integrated circuit) as the number of input ports increased, the used of switching module method the realizes 32$\times$32, 150 Mb/s switch utilizing 8$\times$8, 600Mb/s os 16$\times$16, 150Mb/s unit switch is latest ATM switching technology for small and large scale. In this paper, buffer capacity satisfying total-memory-reduction effect by buffer sharing in a shared buffer memory switch are analytically evalu ated and simulated by computer with cell loss level at traffic conditions, and also features of switching network utilizing the switching module methods in small and large-capacity ATM switching system is analized. Based on this results, the structure in outline of 32$\times$32(4.9Gb/s throughput), 150Mb/s switches under research in many countries is proposed, and eventually, switching-network structure for ATM switching system of small and large and capacity satisfying with above primary goals is suggested.

This paper studied the SET situation in VLSI because the electronic devices exposed to SET can indicate irregular operation and output errors. The SET environment was established using the exponential static wave (iexp) in the fold-cascode comparator. The comparator was experimented with how it affected it by the SET. In a folded comparator that did not enter the SET situation, the propagation delay was measured at 0.26㎲ and the gain was 0.649. The MOSFET close to the output stage was measured sensitively in the folded comparator that entered the SET situation. And propagation delay was calculated from 0.36 to 0.37㎲ and the gain was 0.649. The mid-position MOSFET was calculated from 0.28 to 0.30㎲ and the gain was 0.649. The MOSFET, which is farthest from the output stage from the folded comparator, was calculated with the propagation delay between 0.25 and 0.26㎲ and the gain of 0.649. In SET situations, the MOSFET close to the output portion of the folded comparator was sensitive. And at the MOSFET far from the output, the same results were obtained as a normal folded comparator without the SET input.

Wide-band sharp-transition filters are widely used in applications such as wireless CODEC design or medical systems. Since these filters suffer from large sensitivity and roundoff noise, large word-length is required for the VLSI implementation, which increases the hardware size and the power consumption of the chip. In this paper, a low-power implementation technique for digital filters with wide-band sharp-transition characteristics is proposed using CPL (Complementary Pass-Transistor Logic), LWDF (Lattice Wave Digital Filter) and a modified DIFIR (Decomposed & Interpolated FIR) algorithm. To reduce the short-circuit current component in CPL circuits due to threshold voltage reduction through the pass transistor, three different approaches can be used: cross-coupled PMOS latch, PMOS body biasing and weak PMOS latch. Of the three, the cross-coupled PMOS latch approach is the most realistic solution when the noise margin as well as the energy-delay product is considered. To optimize CPL transistor size with insight, the empirical formulas for the delay and energy consumption in the basic structure of CPL circuits were derived from the simulation results. In addition, the filter coefficients are encoded using CSD (Canonic Signed Digit) format and optimized by a coefficient quantization program. The hardware cost is minimized further by a modified DIFIR algorithm. Simulation result shows that the proposed method can achieve about 38% reductions in power consumption compared with the conventional method.
In this paper, we deal with the research about a S/PDIF (Sony Philips Digital Interface) receiver which can operate without PLL (Phase Locked Loop) circuits. Although a S/PDIF receiver is used in most audio devices and audio processors in these days. yet there are only few domestic researches about S/PDIF. Currently used commercial DACs (Digital-to-Analog Converters) which can decode S/PDIF signals, have a PLL circuit inside them. The PLL makes it possible to extract clock information from S/PDIF digital signal and to synchronize a clock signal with input signals. But the PLL circuit makes many diffculties in designing the SOC (System On Chips) of VLSIs (Vew Large Scale Integrated Ciruits) because it is an "analog circuit". We proposed a S/PDIF receiver which doesn't have PLL circuits and only has Pure digital circuits. The key idea of the proposed S/PDIF receiver. is to use the ratio between a 16 MHz basic input clock and S/PDIF signals. After having decoded hundreds thousands S/PDIF inputs, it went to prove that a S/PDIF receiver can be designed with pure digital circuits and without any analog circuits such as PLL circuits. We have confidence that the proposed S/PDIF receiver can be used as an IP (Intellectual Property) for the SOC design of the digital circuits.

The representative area among the ones whose cost increases as the integration ratio increases is the test area. As the relative cost of hardware decreases, the BIST method has been focued on as the future-oriented test method. The biggest drawback of it is the increasing test time to obtain the acceptable fault coverage. This paper proposed a BIST implementation method to reduce the test times. This method uses an input grouping and test point insertion method, in which the definition of test point is different from the previous one. That is, the test points are defined on the basis of the internal nodes which are the reference points of the input grouping and are merging points of the grouped signals. The main algorithms in the proposed method were implemented with C-language, and various circuits were used to apply the proposed method for experiment. The results showed that the test time could be reduced to at most $1/2^{40}$ of the pseudo-random pattern case and the fault coverage were also increased compared with the conventional BIST method. The relative hardware overhead of the proposed method to the circuit under test decreases as th e size of the circuit to be tested increases, and the delay overhead by the BIST utility is negligible compared to that of the original circuit. That means, the proposed method can be applied efficiently to large VLSI circuits.
In this paper, the multiple-valued adders and multipliers are implemented by current-mode CMOS. First, we implement the 3-valued T-gate and the 4-valued T-gate using current-mode CMOS which have an effective availability of integrated circuit design. Second we implement the circuits to be realized 2-variable 3-valued addition table and multiplication table over finite fields $GF(3^2)$, and 2-variable 4-valued addition table and multiplication table over finite fields $GF(4^2)$ with the multiple-valued T-gates. Finally, these operation circuits are simulated under $1.5\mutextrm{m}$ CMOS standard technology, $15\mutextrm{A}$ unit current, and 3.3V VDD voltage Spice. The simulation results have shown the satisfying current characteristics. The 3-valued adder and multiplier, and the 4-valued adder and multiplier implemented by current-mode CMOS is simple and regular for wire routing and possesses the property of modularity with cell array. Also, since it is expansible for the addition and multiplication of two polynomials in the finite field with very large m, it is suitable for VLSI implementation.
