In the ship structural design, the material cost of hull weight and the overall cost of construction processes should be minimized considering safety and reliability. In the past, minimum weight design has been mainly focused on reducing material cost and increasing dead weight reflect the interests of a ship's owner. But, in the past experience, the minimum weight design has been inevitably lead to increasing the construction cost. Therefore, it is necessary that the designer of ship structure should consider both structural weight and construction cost. In this point of view, multi-objective optimization technique is proposed to design the ship structure in this study. According to the proposed algorithm, the results of optimization were compared to the structural design of actual VLCC(Very Large Crude Oil Carrier). Objective functions were weight cost and construction cost of VLCC, and ES(Evolution Strategies), one of the stochastic search methods, was used as an optimization solver. For the scantlings of members and the estimations of objectives, classification rule was adopted for the longitudinal members, and the direct calculation method, GSDM(Generalized Slope Deflection Method), lot the transverse members. To choose the most economical design point among the results of Pareto optimal set, RFR(Required Freight Rate) was evaluated for each Pareto point, and compared to actual ship.
SEEMP (Ship Energy Efficiency Management Plan) guidelines for a ship's GHG reduction include a machinery modification of hull, an installation of energy efficiency enhanced attachment in hardware methods. It is also possible to bring a ship energy efficiency improvement by fuel-efficient operations or in other software methods. Hardware modification or installation on ship can bring financial burdens to a ship company compared to its improvement expectation. On the other hand, Software based energy-saving technology can be applicable on various ship types, and it is also expected high efficiency of ship energy use compared to hardware based technology in perspective of the investment costs and efficiency. In this paper, it is described that the ship handling simulator based evaluation was carried out using representative ship model of bulk, container and VLCC. Simulation environments were separated into 6 conditions according to the sea-state and weather condition, and the operation results were compared with those before and after energy saving system applied The container ship showed the largest FOC save rate after energy saving system applied although the others also showed energy save rate after using the system.
One practical method has already been proposed for predicting the characteristics of ship manoeuvring motions at relatively high advance speed [19]. Howeverf, this method can hardly be applied to motions of ships in starting, stopping, backing and slow steaming conditions, even though such extensive motions are of vital importance from a safety point of view particularly in harbour areas. The method presented here aims at predicting the characteristics of ship manoeuvring at low advance speed, which covers starting, stopping, backing and slow steaming conditions. The force mathematical models at large angles of incidence to the hull as well as under the wide range of propeller operations are formulated. Simulations of various manoeuvres at low advance speed are carried out for two types of merchant ship, I.e. a LNGC and a VLCC. Comparisons between simulations and corresponding full-scale measurements [10], [15] or free-running model tests [6],[10] provide a first verification of the proposed mathematical models.

In this paper, the Flow Control Fin(FCF) optimization has been carried out using computational fluid dynamics(CFD) techniques. This study focused on evaluation for the performance of the FCF attached in the stern part of the ship. The main advantage of FCF is to enhance the resistance performance through the lift generation with a forward force component on the foil section, and the propulsive performance by the uniformity of velocity distribution on the propeller plane. This study intended to evaluate these functions and to find optimized FCF form for minimizing viscous resistance and equalizing wake distribution. Four parameters of FCF are used in the study, which were angle and position of FCF, longitudinal location, transverse location, and span length in the optimization process. KRISO 300K VLCC2(KVLCC2) was chosen for an example ship to demonstrate FCF for optimization. The optimization procedure utilized genetic algorithms (GAs), a gradient-based optimizer for the refinement of the solution, and Non-dominated Sorting GA-II(NSGA-II) for Multiobjective Optimization. The results showed that the optimized FCF could enhance the uniformity of wake distribution at the expense of viscous resistance.

For risk or reliability assessment of ship structures against particular hazardous situations such as total loss or sinking due to hull girder collapse, the short-term based response analysis rather than the long-term response analysis is required to determine wave-induced bending moments when the ship encounters a storm of specific duration and with a specified small encounter probability. In the present study, the effects of operational condition and sea states on wave-induced bending moments of large merchant vessels are investigated. A series of the short-term response analyses for a hypothetical VLCC and a Capesize bulk carrier (CSBC) are carried out with varying operational condition and sea states which include ship speed, significant wave height and wave persistence time, using the linear-strip theory based program ABS/SHIPMOTION and the MIT sea-keeping tables. The computed results are also compared with the IACS design formula predictions. The results and insights developed from the present study are summarized.

A design-oriented method for analysis of the structural damage due to ship collisions is developed by using the idealized structural unit method(ISUM). The method takes into account yielding, crushing, rupture, the coupling effects between local and global failure of the structure, the influence of strain-rate sensitivity and the gap/contact conditions. The method is verified by a comparison of experimetal and numerical results obtained from test models of double-skin plated structures in collision/grounding situations with the present solutions. As an illustrative example, the method has been used for analyses of a side collision of a double-hull tanker. Several factors affecting ship collision response. namely the collision speed and the scantlings/arrangements of strength members, are discussed.
This paper presents the design concept and operation results of float-off for FSO (340,000 DWT Class, ELF AMENAM KPONO Project) built on the ground, without dry dock facilities. It was the first attempt to build FSO, completely, on the ground and launch it using DBU (Double Barge Unit, which was connected by rigid frame structure.) The major characteristics of FSO, which are similar to general VLCC type hull, including topside structure, weigh 51,000 metric ton. In order to have sufficient stability during the deck immersion of DBU, while passing through a minimum water plane area zone, proper trim control was completed with LMC (Load Master Computer). The major features of the monitoring system include calculation for transverse bending moment, shear force, local strength check of each connector, based on component stress, and deformation check during the load-out and float-off. Another major concern during the operation was to avoid damages at the bottom and sides of FSO, due to motion & movement after free-floating; therefore, adequate clearances between DBU and FSO were to be provided, and guide posts were installed to prevent side damage of the DBU casings. This paper also presents various measures that indecate the connector bending moment, damage stability analysis, and mooring of DBU during float off.
In this paper, wake equalizing duct (WED) form optimization was carried out using computational fluid dynamics (CFD) techniques. A WED is a ring-shaped flow vane with a foil-type cross-section fitted to a hull in front of the upper propeller area. The main advantage of a WED is the power savings resulting from the uniformity of the velocity distribution on the propeller plane, a reduction in the flow separation at the aft-body, and lift generation with a forward force component on the foil section. This paper intends to evaluate these functions and find an optimized WED form for minimizing the viscous resistance and equalizing the wake distribution. In the optimization process, the study uses four WED parameters: the angle of the section, longitudinal location, and angles of the axes for the half rings against the longitudinal and transverse planes of the ship. KRISO 300K VLCC2 (KVLCC2) is chosen as an example ship to demonstrate the WED optimization. The optimization procedure uses genetic algorithms (GAs), a gradient-based optimizer for the refinement of the solution, and Non-dominated Sorting GA-II(NSGA-II) for Multiobjective Optimization. The results show that the optimized WED can reduce the viscous resistance at the expense of the uniformity of the wake distribution.

To predict the viscous boundary layers and wakes around a ship, the CFD techniques are commonly used. For the efficient application of CFD tools to practical hull farms, a 3-D field grid generating system is developed. The present grid generating system utilizes the solution of Poisson equation. Sorenson's method developed for 2-D is extended into 3-D to provide the forcing functions controling grid interval and orthogonality on hull surface, etc. The weighting function scheme is used for the discretization of the Poisson equation and the linear equations are solved by using MSIP salver. The trans-finite interpolation is also employed to assure the smooth transition into boundary surface grids. To rove the applicability, the field grid systems around a container ship and a VLCC with bow and stem bulb are illustrated, and the procedures for generating 3-D field grid system are explained.

Today's engineering design is carried out in a distributed fashion geographically or physically. This places new requirements on the computational environments such as efficient integration and collaboration. With the advances of the Internet and Network environment recently, many researches have been proposed and at the same time, Web-based distributed design gives to a new paradigm in design and manufacturing fields. That is, Web-based technologies lead to reduce the product development times and to ensure a competitive product in order to exchange and interact of real-time design information that integrates the distributed design environment between departments as well as companies via Internet and Web. So, an efficient data communication for design information sharing is the foundation for collaborative systems in the distributed environment. Design data communication techniques such as CORBA, DCOM and RMI have been considered in the existing research but they have some problems that are limitations of interoperability and firewall problems in the Web. Therefore, this paper presents a Web-based distributed design application where distributed design information resources are integrated and exchanged using Web Services for supporting XML and HTTP without the interoperability and firewall problems through the 330K VLCC case.
