  • In VLBI(Very Long Baseline Interferometry), the observed data created in many observatories which are far away from each other should be collected in correlation center for data analysis. Traditionally, observed data is moved by transportation such as car or airplane. But it is replaced with data transfer over the network rapidly as the advancement of information technology, and therefore, international cooperative research is also now more widely expanding. e-KVN(electronic Korean VLBI Network) has been upgraded two times so the network interface of KVN has been evolved to the highest specification of 100GbE. During this time period, the portion of network usage for VLBI observations and experiments in KVN has been increased exponentially. In this paper, we describe KVN VLBI system and network technology for the performance upgrade and advanced status monitoring between three radio astronomy observatories and Daejeon correlation center with KREONET(Korea Research Environment Open NETwork). Furthermore, future plan of e-KVN for the implementation of wide band VLBI observation will be also briefly discussed.

  • We present the results of image simulations of 43.1 GHz SiO maser emission toward a Mira variable using the KVN (Korean VLBI Network) and other facilities which can make joint VLBI experiments with the KVN. To test the imaging capability of the KVN we used the image of SiO masers in the simulation obtained by the VLBA, which is considered to be the optimum VLBI facility at present to study SiO masers toward evolved stars. The simulated images of SiO maser emission confirm that coordinate VLBI expriments of KVN with several more stations in Japan or in the neighborhood of Korean Peninsula are necessary to exert the functional benefit of the KVN as the first mm VLBI facility which can perform simultaneous observations at four different frequency bands.

  • We have carried out 43-GHz VLBI test observations of the Korean VLBI Network (KVN), which has obtained the first fringes at 22/43-GHz in 2009 (a talk by Sohn, Bong Won). In collaboration with VERA (VLBI Exploration of Radio Astrometry) in Japan, we have observed Active Galactic Nuclei (AGNs) and Orion-KL at 43GHz on 22nd and 23rd December, 2009, in order to evaluate the baseline- and image-sensitivity of KVN and KVN+VERA. In this talk we report the preliminary results of the VLBI test observations of the Korean VLBI Network at 43GHz.

  • We present the results of the first simultaneous dual-frequency VLBI observation with KVN (Korean VLBI Network). The KVN has a unique multi-frequency receiving system performing simultaneous observations at four frequencies, such as 22, 43, 86, and 129 GHz, in order to calibrate the atmospheric phase fluctuations, which cause a severe degradation of an interferometric coherence in mm-VLBI regime. In order to test the multi-frequency phase referencing capability of KVN, we observe the bright continuum VLBI source, NRAO 150 at two different frequencies of 21.7 (K band) and 43.4 (Q band) GHz simultaneously. The VLBI fringe phases at K and Q bands show a tight correlation of phase behaviors and the results of phase referencing (residual phase, coherence etc) are promising for achieving excellent phase referencing observations with KVN. The KVN will be able to open new perspectives in the multi-frequency study of VLBI.

  • KVN simulation, which is focused on evaluating the impacts of KVN to geodetic VLBI network, was performed. The KVN is under construction with three radio telescopes VLBI system for radio astronomy and space geodesy. To distinguish the impacts of KVN on global and local scale networks, we designed two different sizes of VLBI networks, namely, KVN-Asia and KVN-Pacific. While the former consisted of Far East Asia region VLBI stations, the latter consisted of pacific region VLBT stations. The primary purpose of our simulation is quantitative evaluation of KVN impacts before and after the participation of KVN in the previous two virtual networks. We selected two different sets of parameters to be estimated in the simulation as indices of evaluating estimation precision: station coordinates and EOPs. The station coordinates are evaluating index for KVN-Asia and the EOPs are another evaluating index for KVN-Pacific. From the simulation results of comparisons between evaluating indexes, 50% and 20% of maximum improvements for KVN-Asia and KVN-Pacific were anticipated respectively. We expect that the space geodetic use of KVN will be focused on the several promising research fields which are proposed through the simulation results.

  • We have carried out VLBI test observations of the Korean VLBI Network (KVN) at 22/43-GHz in collaboration with Japanese VLBI Exploration of Radio Astrometry (VERA). In order to evaluate the VLBI system of KVN, we have observed several sources using KVN+VERA. They consist of Active Galactic Nuclei (AGNs), which are expected to be compact and to have very well-known structures at spatial resolutions of 50-250 Mega-wavelengths, and Galactic star-forming regions and late-type stars, which have bright H2O and SiO maser emission regions. We have investigated baseline and imaging sensitivities of KVN+VERA. In this talk we report the preliminary results.

  • We report results of image simulations of the KVN and VLBI experiments of the KVN with several other East Asia VLBI facilities. To investigate their imaging capability a model-generated image of 7 mm SiO maser emission in Mira variables is used. The resulting simulations show that the joint VLBI experiments of the KVN with East Asia VLBI facilities can produce reasonably good images at 7 mm spectral line experiments. However, there are no apparent differences in peak flux densities and images themselves in the simulations among different combinations of these facilities. In addition, the simulated images of observations which include bigger antennas do not show any expected improvement to the image sensitivity. The small variations in the peak flux density and similar image sensitivity, irrespective of different antenna sizes or numbers of baselines used in the simulations, turn out due to a specific characteristic of the adopted model image. Test simulations using another SiO maser image from R Cas observations prove that the participation of bigger antennas in the VLBI experiments does improve image sensitivity. We confirm the need of additional longer baselines in the experiments of the East Asia VLBI facilities to study very compact maser clumps on sub-milliarcsecond scales.

  • The Korean VLBI Network (KVN) as a world-first multi-frequency VLBI system is operated at four bands of 22, 43, 86, and 129 GHz simultaneously. The performances of both single dish and VLBI network were already confirmed through single dish researches and VLBI evaluation test observations. The VLBI common use of the KVN at 22/43 GHz bands has been started from this autumn. The combined network of KVN and Japanese VERA (KaVA) will start the common use from the first half of next year. Here we present several observational results in the fields of star forming regions, late-type stars, and active galactic nuclei using the KVN and KaVA. The fringes of 44 GHz $CH_3OH$ (Class I) masers were detected from 26 sources for the first time using the KVN and imaging observations are under performing. Simultaneous observations of SiO and $H_2O$ masers toward about 1000 evolved stars showed the different maser properties between SiO and $H_2O$ masers according to the evolutionary stages of AGB and post-AGB stars. The catalog of correlated flux densities were established from a 43 GHz (Q-band) survey of 637 extragalactic sources. At 22 GHz (K-band), flux density measurement and fringe survey for new sources were performed toward a large number of sources. In addition, the large program of KVN and/or KaVA under planning is introduced.
