  • This research is the palynotaxonomic revision to clarify palynological descriptions and relationships of taxa in Korean Verbenaceae. To do this, morphology, size, sculpture and aperture of pollen grain were investigated with scanning electron microscope. As a result, palynological key as to 5 genera 10 species drawn up. Palynological descriptions of Callicarpa dichotoma, Callicarpa mollis, Callicarpa chejuensis, Vitex chinensis and Caryopteris incana are near completion at first. Vervena officinalis are newly described and descriptions of Callicarpa japonica, Clerodendrum trichotomum, Vitex rotundifolia and Caryopteris divaricata are corrected. Palynological data of Korean Verbenaceae is useful to intrageneric relationships. Namely, as to genus Callicarpa, C. dichotoma and C. japonica are considered to be more advanced than C. mollis and C. chejuensis. As to genus Caryopteris, C. divaricata is more advanced than C. incana.

  • This study was conducted to evaluate the vegetation structure of community by the phytosociology method, floristic composition table on coast of South Korea. Form 2007 June until November, $2m{\times}2m$ quadrat was established in native Glehnia littoralis in order to record a dominants and coverage, and it drew the profile. It was found out that the mean temperature in the distributed areas for Glehnia littoralis population was $11^{\circ}C$ or more. The flora of the studied area in Glehnia lottoralis community of coastal dune was listed as 100 species. Glehnia lottoralis community of appearance species of Yeonggwanggun Duwori was many most by 44 species. Carex pumila, Carex Kobomugi, Imperata cylindrica var. koenigii, Ischaemum anthephehoroides and Vitex rotundifolia range all over the studied areas. And the vegetation of Glehnia littoralis community was classified into Vitex rotundifolia subcommunity, Ischaemun anthephephoroides subcommunity and Imperata cylindrica var. koenigii subcommunity. Native Glehnia littoralis was classified into preserve area, natural selection area and artificial destruction area. It must preserve native Glehnia littoralis of Goseong, Yeongdeok, Haenam it was ecological important area.

  • We conducted the study on the relationship between the distribution of coastal sand dune plants and edaphic factors from the shoreline to inland in sand dune ecosystem. The application of TWINSPAN classification based on 10 species, led to the recognition of three vegetative groups (A-C), which associated with their habitats (foredune, hummuck in semistable zone and stable zone). The associations were separated along soil gradient far from the seashore. The relationships between species composition and environmental gradients were explained by canonical correspondence analysis (CCA). Distance from the shoreline was an important indicator to determine soil properties (pH, total ion contents, sand particle sizes, organic matters and nitrogen contents) from the seaward area to inland area and distribution pattern of coastal sand dune plants. Group A is foredune zone, characterized by Calystegia soldanella; group included typical foredune species such as Elymus mollis, Carex kobomugi, Ixeris repens, C. soldanella and Glehnia littoralis. Group B on semi-stabilized zone was characterized by Vitex rotundifolia, a perennial woody shrub. This group was associated the proportion of fine sand size (100 to 250 μm). The results on the proportion of soil particle size showed a transition in sand composition, particularly with respect to the proportion of fine sand size that occurred from the foredune ridge at 32.5 m to the Vitex rotundifolia community at 57.5 m from the shoreline. Group C on stabilized zone was characterized by Zoysia macrostachya, Lathyrus japonicus and Cynodon dactylon and were associated soil organic matter and nitrogen contents. The spatial distribution of plants in the Goraebul coastal sand dune system may result from the interactions between the plant species and environmental heterogeneity.

  • The essential oils isolated from leaves, flowers, stems, and fruits of Vitex rotundifolia by steam distillation and extraction (SDE) method were analyzed by gas chromatography (GC) and gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS). A total of 76 components detected by GC, 42 components were identified positively by GC-MS and GC co-injection with authentic standards, and 34 components were identified tentatively by mass spectral data only. They included 16 monoterpene hydrocarbons, 30 oxygenated hydrocarbons, 10 sesquiterpene hydrocarbons, 8 oxygenated sesquiterpenes, 3 diterpenes, and 9 miscellaneous components. The major components in the oil from the leaves were ${\alpha}-pinene$ (30.25%), 1,8-cineole (19.89%), sabinene (9.56%), ${\alpha}-terpineol$ (7.94%), ${\beta}-pinene$ (5.69%), and terpinen-4-ol (2.37%), and those in the flower oil were ${\alpha}-pinene$ (25.47%), 1,8-cineole (7.69%), manoyl oxide (6.21%), ${\beta}-pinene$ (4.20%), ${\alpha}-te.pineol$ (3.76%), and sabinene (2.78%). Samples were collected for 106 plots using ZM phytosociology method and coincidence method. Actual vegetation were classified into three vegetations types(forest vegetation type, maritime vegetation type, lake vegetation type) and eleven community units. Pourthiaea villosa community in forest vegetation type was divided into 5 groups such as Carpinus coreana group, Pinus rigida group, Chamaecyparis obtusa group, Castanea crenata group and Typical group. Maritime vegetation type was divided into 3 communities, such as Vitex rotundifolia community, Koelreuteria paniculata community and Suaeda japonica community. V. rotundifolia community was subdivided into 2 groups, Rosa rugosa group and Diodia teres group. K. paniculata community was subdivided into 2 groups, Grewia biloba var. parviflora group and Typical group. Lake vegetation type was divided into 1 community, Nelumbo nucifera community. And it was entirely classified into 11 community units.

  • Vegetation types and their standing crop in the sand dune on the south coast of Korea was investigated by the method of Curtis, J.T. and McIntosh, R.P. (1951). The relationship between vegetation types and environmental factors was also analyzed. The dominant species in the vegetations of the south coast sand dune were Carex pumila, Calystegia soldamella, Imperata cylindrica var. koenigii, Vitex rotundifolia, Ixeris repens, Carex kobomugi, Zoysia macrostachya. The species density in the sand dune vegetation increased with the distance from the coast, psammophyte and rhizome psammophyte decreased with the distance from the coast but other plants increased. The standing crop of the sand dune vegetatiion was average $53.79g/m^2$. An individual standing crop of Vitex routundifolia and Carex kobomugi varied with the curve of secondary degree. The salt content of the sand dune soil from 2.95 to 11.78 mg %, and it was not significant differences among stands, but it was varied with the distance form the coast. Negative relationship between warmth index and aboveground standing crop was found and the formula y=283.8886 - 2.4910X could be estimated.

  • Vitex trifolia L. is a full grown fruit of Vitex rotundifolia L. (Verbenaceae). It has been used for treating headache, dizziness, toothache and removal of fever as a traditional medicine in Korea. V. trifolia (500 g) were extracted three times with 80% aqueous MeOH at room temperature. The MeOH extract (38 g) was successively partitioned with n-hexane, EtOAc, n-BuOH and $H_2O$. Both n-hexane and EtOAc fractions showed more than 80% antifungal activity in vivo against several plant pathogens at 2000 ppm. Successive repeated silica gel, Sephadex LH-20, preparative TLC, and preparative HPLC of these fractions led to isolation of three compounds. Using mainly mass spectroscopy and nuclear magnatic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy, their chemical structures were determined as agnuside(1), chrysosplenol B(2), and artemetin(3). Compound 2 was isolated for the first time from V. trifolia. Study on in vitro and in vivo antifungal activities of the isolated compounds is in progress.
