In recent years, Convolutional Neural Networks (CNNs) have achieved outstanding performance in the fields of computer vision such as image classification, object detection, visual quality enhancement, etc. However, as huge amount of computation and memory are required in CNN models, there is a limitation in the application of CNN to low-power environments such as mobile or IoT devices. Therefore, the need for neural network compression to reduce the model size while keeping the task performance as much as possible has been emerging. In this paper, we propose a method to compress CNN models by combining matrix decomposition methods of LR (Low-Rank) approximation and CP (Canonical Polyadic) decomposition. Unlike conventional methods that apply one matrix decomposition method to CNN models, we selectively apply two decomposition methods depending on the layer types of CNN to enhance the compression performance. To evaluate the performance of the proposed method, we use the models for image classification such as VGG-16, RestNet50 and MobileNetV2 models. The experimental results show that the proposed method gives improved classification performance at the same range of 1.5 to 12.1 times compression ratio than the existing method that applies only the LR approximation.

Screening with low-dose spiral computed tomography (LDCT) has been shown to reduce lung cancer mortality by about 20% when compared to standard chest radiography. One of the problems arising from screening programs is that large amounts of CT image data must be interpreted by radiologists. To solve this problem, automated detection of pulmonary nodules is necessary; however, this is a challenging task because of the high number of false positive results. Here we demonstrate detection of pulmonary nodules using six off-the-shelf convolutional neural network (CNN) models after modification of the input/output layers and end-to-end training based on publicly databases for comparative evaluation. We used the well-known CNN models, LeNet-5, VGG-16, GoogLeNet Inception V3, ResNet-152, DensNet-201, and NASNet. Most of the CNN models provided superior results to those of obtained using customized CNN models. It is more desirable to modify the proven off-the-shelf network model than to customize the network model to detect the pulmonary nodules.
Over the past decade, researchers were able to solve complex medical problems as well as acquire deeper understanding of entire issue due to the availability of machine learning techniques, particularly predictive algorithms and automatic recognition of patterns in medical imaging. In this study, a technique called transfer learning has been utilized to classify Magnetic Resonance (MR) images by a pre-trained Convolutional Neural Network (CNN). Rather than training an entire model from scratch, transfer learning approach uses the CNN model by fine-tuning them, to classify MR images into Alzheimer's disease (AD), mild cognitive impairment (MCI) and normal control (NC). The performance of this method has been evaluated over Alzheimer's Disease Neuroimaging (ADNI) dataset by changing the learning rate of the model. Moreover, in this study, in order to demonstrate the transfer learning approach we utilize different pre-trained deep learning models such as GoogLeNet, VGG-16, AlexNet and ResNet-18, and compare their efficiency to classify AD. The overall classification accuracy resulted by GoogLeNet for training and testing was 99.84% and 98.25% respectively, which was exceptionally more than other models training and testing accuracies.

Iris segmentation is an initial step for identifying the biometrics of animals when establishing a traceability system for livestock. In this study, we propose a deep learning framework for pixel-wise segmentation of bovine iris with a minimized use of annotation labels utilizing the BovineAAEyes80 public dataset. The proposed image segmentation framework encompasses data collection, data preparation, data augmentation selection, training of 15 deep neural network (DNN) models with varying encoder backbones and segmentation decoder DNNs, and evaluation of the models using multiple metrics and graphical segmentation results. This framework aims to provide comprehensive and in-depth information on each model's training and testing outcomes to optimize bovine iris segmentation performance. In the experiment, U-Net with a VGG16 backbone was identified as the optimal combination of encoder and decoder models for the dataset, achieving an accuracy and dice coefficient score of 99.50% and 98.35%, respectively. Notably, the selected model accurately segmented even corrupted images without proper annotation data. This study contributes to the advancement of iris segmentation and the establishment of a reliable DNN training framework.

The purpose of this study is to classify TIFF images, PNG images, and JPEG images using deep learning, and to compare the accuracy by verifying the classification performance. The TIFF, PNG, and JPEG images converted from chest X-ray DICOM images were applied to five deep neural network models performed in image recognition and classification to compare classification performance. The data consisted of a total of 4,000 X-ray images, which were converted from DICOM images into 16-bit TIFF images and 8-bit PNG and JPEG images. The learning models are CNN models - VGG16, ResNet50, InceptionV3, DenseNet121, and EfficientNetB0. The accuracy of the five convolutional neural network models of TIFF images is 99.86%, 99.86%, 99.99%, 100%, and 99.89%. The accuracy of PNG images is 99.88%, 100%, 99.97%, 99.87%, and 100%. The accuracy of JPEG images is 100%, 100%, 99.96%, 99.89%, and 100%. Validation of classification performance using test data showed 100% in accuracy, precision, recall and F1 score. Our classification results show that when DICOM images are converted to TIFF, PNG, and JPEG images and learned through preprocessing, the learning works well in all formats. In medical imaging research using deep learning, the classification performance is not affected by converting DICOM images into any format.

Agriculture is one of the essential needs of human life on planet Earth. It is the source of food and earnings for many individuals around the world. The economy of many countries is associated with the agriculture sector. Lots of diseases exist that attack various fruits and crops. Apple Tree Leaves also suffer different types of pathological conditions that affect their production. These pathological conditions include apple scab, cedar apple rust, or multiple diseases, etc. In this paper, an automatic detection framework based on deep learning is investigated for apple leaves disease classification. Different pre-trained models, VGG16, ResNetV2, InceptionV3, and MobileNetV2, are considered for transfer learning. A combination of parameters like learning rate, batch size, and optimizer is analyzed, and the best combination of ResNetV2 with Adam optimizer provided the best classification accuracy of 94%.

Histopathological analysis of biopsy specimens is still used for diagnosis and classifying the brain tumors today. The available procedures are intrusive, time consuming, and inclined to human error. To overcome these disadvantages, need of implementing a fully automated deep learning-based model to classify brain tumor into multiple classes. The proposed CNN model with an accuracy of 92.98 % for categorizing tumors into five classes such as normal tumor, glioma tumor, meningioma tumor, pituitary tumor, and metastatic tumor. Using the grid search optimization approach, all of the critical hyper parameters of suggested CNN framework were instantly assigned. Alex Net, Inception v3, Res Net -50, VGG -16, and Google - Net are all examples of cutting-edge CNN models that are compared to the suggested CNN model. Using huge, publicly available clinical datasets, satisfactory classification results were produced. Physicians and radiologists can use the suggested CNN model to confirm their first screening for brain tumor Multi-classification.

Data augmentation has been helpful in improving the performance in deep learning, when we have a limited data and random erasing is one of the augmentations that have shown impressive performance in deep learning in multiple domains. But the main issue is that sometime it loses good features when randomly selected region is erased by some random values, that does not improve performance as it should. We target that problem in way that good features should not be lost and also want random erasing at the same time. For that purpose, we introduce new augmentation technique named Intra-Class Random Erasing (ICRE) that focuses on data to learn robust features of the same class samples by randomly exchanging randomly selected region. We perform multiple experiments by using different models including resnet18, VGG16 over variety of the datasets including ESC10, UrbanSound8K. Our approach has shown effectiveness over others methods including random erasing.

Biometric recognition is a technology that determines whether a person is identified by extracting information on a person's biometric and behavioral characteristics with a specific device. Cyber threats such as forgery, duplication, and hacking of biometric characteristics are increasing in the field of biometrics. In response, the security system is strengthened and complex, and it is becoming difficult for individuals to use. To this end, multiple biometric models are being studied. Existing studies have suggested feature fusion methods, but comparisons between feature fusion methods are insufficient. Therefore, in this paper, we compared and evaluated the fusion method of multiple biometric models using fingerprint, face, and iris images. VGG-16, ResNet-50, EfficientNet-B1, EfficientNet-B4, EfficientNet-B7, and Inception-v3 were used for feature extraction, and the fusion methods of 'Sensor-Level', 'Feature-Level', 'Score-Level', and 'Rank-Level' were compared and evaluated for feature fusion. As a result of the comparative evaluation, the EfficientNet-B7 model showed 98.51% accuracy and high stability in the 'Feature-Level' fusion method. However, because the EfficietnNet-B7 model is large in size, model lightweight studies are needed for biocharacteristic fusion.

In our daily life, we come across different types of information, for example in the format of multimedia and text. We all need different types of information for our common routines as watching/reading the news, listening to the radio, and watching different types of videos. However, sometimes we could run into problems when a certain type of information is required. For example, someone is listening to the radio and wants to listen to jazz, and unfortunately, all the radio channels play pop music mixed with advertisements. The listener gets stuck with pop music and gives up searching for jazz. So, the above example can be solved with an automatic audio classification system. Deep Learning (DL) models could make human life easy by using audio classifications, but it is expensive and difficult to deploy such models at edge devices like nano BLE sense raspberry pi, because these models require huge computational power like graphics processing unit (G.P.U), to solve the problem, we proposed DL model. In our proposed work, we had gone for a low complexity model for Audio Event Detection (AED), we extracted Mel-spectrograms of dimension 128×431×1 from audio signals and applied normalization. A total of 3 data augmentation methods were applied as follows: frequency masking, time masking, and mixup. In addition, we designed Convolutional Neural Network (CNN) with spatial dropout, batch normalization, and separable 2D inspired by VGGnet [1]. In addition, we reduced the model size by using model quantization of float16 to the trained model. Experiments were conducted on the updated dataset provided by the Detection and Classification of Acoustic Events and Scenes (DCASE) 2020 challenge. We confirm that our model achieved a val_loss of 0.33 and an accuracy of 90.34% within the 132.50KB model size.
