  • Poor quality and lower levels of lighting can produce severe problems in visual environment including glare, veiling reflections and contrast. This study aims to evaluate the lighting environment around VDTs. For the purpose, brightness contrast on screen, Reyboaed, and document, and their illumination were measured and compared to German Standard. The lighting environment of two offices untilizing VDTs were significantly different according to the daylight direction; the side and the frontward.

  • The purpose of this study is to extract typical body shape of Korean VDT workers based on the three-dimensional Korean shape data and recommendation supported by Korea Occupational Safety & Health Agency during VDT task. Desirable desk heights and chair heights for the selection of the VDT working posture is proposed by analyzing moment, compression and joint shear for lumbar and spine of Korean adult(male and female). The desirable heights for desk and chair can be selected by the least load method during VDT tasks. In the current work the figures of Korean 50th percentile offered by CATIA-HUMAN are used as the average body type of the grown-ups and this research is accomplished with the recommended size of all working attitude such as the height of a monitor except for the height of desk and chair and the degree of watching the monitor.

  • Purpose: We intended to study effects of wearing the progressive lenses on legibility of Korean letters under the VDT circumstance. Methods: Fifty subjects wearing the progressive lenses and the single focus lenses were asked to find designated characters on web-pages under the VDT circumstance. We measured times for subjects to read the web-pages and numbers of missed characters, considering them as standards of legibility, and compare results of the progressive lenses with those of the single focus lenses by variables of the size and legibility of letters and the width of web-pages. Results: In case of the progressive lenses, all the times to read the web-pages and some of the numbers of missed characters increased with statistical significance. Smaller the character size, lower the legibility of character itself, and wider the width of web-page, the legibility tended to be seriously lowered by the progressive lenses. Conclusions: It is presumed that the intermediate part of progressive lenses with narrow visual field lowers the legibility of Korean letters under the VDT circumstance.

  • Repetitive stress injury at the wrist has been reported as a common injury among visual display terminal (VDT) users (i.e., computer users). Adjusting a VDT workstation (computer table and chair) to maintain a correct seated posture while operating a keyboard is perhaps the most frequently recommended preventive solution. This paper proposes an analytical design methodology based on ergonomic design principles for recommending appropriate VDT workstation settings and layout of individual computer accessories on the computer table. The proposed design methodology consists of two interrelated phases: (1) determination of VDT workstation settings, and (2) design of computer accessories layout. Based on the information about the VDT user, dominant task to be performed, typing skill, and degrees of physical and visual interactions between the user and computer accessories, adjustment and layout solutions are recommended to allow having a correct seated posture while minimizing both physical and visual movements. The results from an experiment show that when adjusting the workstation and locating the computer accessories according to the recommendations given by the proposed design methodology, the user's hand movements can be significantly reduced.

  • Purpose: Among computer users, the awkward posture and workstation setups of workers contribute to work-related upper limb musculoskeletal disorders. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the efficacy of a traditional physical therapy and ergonomic intervention by physical therapists in 4 computer users. Methods: After checking Visual Analogue Scores (VAS), four subjects who were treated by physical therapy for neck and shoulder problems related to VDT syndrome were enrolled in the study. All subjects spent at least 40 hours per week at a computer workstation. All subjects had pain and ergonomic states evaluated using methods such as VAS, Neck Disability Index (NDI), Workstyle short form, Rapid Upper Limb Assessment (RULA), and OSHA VDT checklist (Occupational Safety and Health Administration video display terminal) before a physical therapy + ergonomic intervention. Participants were re-evaluated 1 month later. Results: Participants showed more improvement of their neck pain after being treated with a physical therapy plus ergonomic intervention than when treatment consisted only of physical therapy. Improvements in RULA, Workstyle short form, and OSHA VDT checklist also were achieved. Conclusion: This case study suggests the importance of examining the work habits and work-related postures of subjects who complain of neck and shoulder pain that is exacerbated by computer use. Personalized ergonomic interventions and physical therapy can lead to improvement of patients with VDT syndrome.

  • Purpose: The purpose of this study was to determine the factors associated with video display terminal (VDT) syndrome in students who use digital textbooks. Methods: A descriptive survey design was used, and 515 students were selected in 6 out of 20 designated as digital textbook research schools by the Ministry of Education, Science and Technology (MEST). Results: The subjective symptoms of VDT and their degree of severity in participants were similar to those in general students. Approximately 12.5% of the participants were classified as a potential risk group for VDT syndrome. In the potential risk group, the mean of the subjective symptoms of VDT was above normal ($2.53{\pm}0.52$). Related factors were identified using logistic regression analysis and included being female (odds ratio [OR]= 2.57, p=.002), communication time with family (<30 min) (OR=2.70, p=.006),moderate satisfaction with school life (OR=2.57, p=.003),and dissatisfaction with school life (OR=14.92, p<.001). Conclusion: In order to prevent the occurrence of VDT syndrome in students, it is necessary to urgently establish a preventative program and monitor the use of digital textbooks.

  • During the period from may to June 2000, a questionnaire study was carried out on 65 male radiological technologist who had been engaged at VDT work, to find out correlation their symptoms to VDT syndrome factors, work environment and condition. The results were as follows : 1. The mean age was 41.0 years, the mean relay working time was 3.75 hours and the mean duration of using computer monitor was 5.9 years, the satisfactory of working was 44.6% the others 55.4%, among these, 3.1% had symptoms before using the VDT and the others had not. 2. The prevalence of symptoms was the highest on wholebody tired, followed by eye, neck, low back, in decreased order and the lowest was fatique of wrist. 3. There was not significant correlation of symptoms to age, but significant to working time, working duration. 4. There was not significant correlation of symptoms to satisfactory. 5. Working desk, monitor, illuminations, temperature, and noise were significantly related to symptoms. 6. There was significant relation of symptoms to CT, MRI workers.

  • With the increase in the number of ICT industry workers, there is a demand for research on preventing VDT syndrome. However, existing posture correction products mostly rely heavily on cameras or sensors in wearable devices. In this paper, we have developed a posture correction system that utilizes built-in cameras and circular pressure sensors to collect posture information. Additionally, the system provides a personalized service by capturing the correct posture of the user initially and monitoring the user's posture based on that input. By precisely correcting postures during users' daily tasks, this system aims to prevent and improve VDT syndrome, ultimately enhancing the efficiency of ICT industry workers.

  • A study on analyze the effect of positive and negative contrast for user performance on the VDT tasks);text typing, text deiting, and searching task) has been performed. The performances were measured in terms of the completion time and the number of errors. The results of each VDT task are followings. In the text typing task and the searching task, the performances measured by the number of errors were better at the condition of negative contrast than at that of positive contrast. In the text deiting task, the performance showed a reverse tendency.
