Efficient Point-to-Multipoint ABR Flow Control Algorithm based on Congestion Depth (폭주 정도의 측정을 통한 효율적인 점대 다중점 ABR 흐름 제어)

  • ATM forum defined several ATM oriented services such as ABR, VBR, CBR, UBR, and others. Among them, ABR service is considered as one of the most appropriate ones in the LAN environment. ABR controls network traffic by using RM cells according to ATM forum standard. In particular, the point-to-multipoint ABR service in general uses consolidation algorithms to solve feedback implosion at the branch point. Consolidation algorithms alleviate propagation delay and network congestion problem: thus, the efficiency of consolidation algorithm is closely related to the network performance. In this paper, we describe the limitation of existing consolidation algorithms based on thorough analysis, and then propose an algorithm that performs better than the existing algorithms. We show that the proposed algorithm improves network performance through a parametric simulation, In our simulation the performance measure is the cell rate which is controlled by exploiting the congestion depth. We also found that the proposed algorithm not only improves efficiency of network, but also eliminates the consolidation noise.

  • In ATM networks CBR data traffic is sent in constant bit rate, and VBR data traffic in variable bit rate. Therefore unused bandwidth at network capacity may exist. To avoid waste of network resourcesm, ABR traffic utilizes the unused bandwidth to the utmost after CBR and VBR data traffic being first served. In this paper, a transfer rate-based congestion control algorithm is proposed for efficient ABR service in ATM networks. In the proposed algorithm the ATM switch first calculates bandwidth according to variable cell transfer rate in an ABR source. records this value in ER field in a RM cell, and then transmits a RM Cell to an ABR source. In this way the proposed algorithm dynamically allocates bandwidth to each ABR source, and the switch also can rapidly adapt to a change of a transfer rate of an source. The performance simulation of the proposed algorithm has batter performance in terms of source condition and link utilization.

  • Asynchronous transfer mode(ATM) is flexible to support the various multimedia communication services such as data, voice, and image by applying asynchronous time-sharing and statistical multiplexing techniques to the existing data communication. ATM service is categorized to CBR, VBR, UBR, and ABR according to characteristics of the traffic and a required service qualities. Among them, ABR service guarantees a minimal bandwidth and can transmit cells at a maximum transmission rate within the available bandwidth. To minimize the cell losses in transmission and switching, a feedback information in ATM network is used to control the traffic. In this paper, predictive control algorithms are proposed for the feedback information. When the feedback information takes a long propagation delay to the backward nodes, ATM switch can experience a congestion situation from the queue length increases, and a high queue length fluctuations in time. The control algorithms proposed in this paper provides predictive control model using slop changes of the queue length function and previous data of the queue lengths. Simulation shows the effectiveness result of the proposed control algorithms.

  • A FR-ATM interworking function that has FR and ATM interfaces, should guarantee the QoS of both frame relay and ATM networks. The IWF requires the policing mechanisms for FR and ATM respectively, and needs to map the traffic parameters each other. In this case, traffic parameter mapping and policing function are performed independently. In the aspect of FR traffic policing, this function degrades processor performance if it is worked by software, or includes additional hardware function. The best way to solve this is to integrate this function into ATM function because ATM is performed by well defined hardware already. In this paper we propose the integrated traffic control mechanism. That is, frames are segmented to cells first, and then policing mechanism is applied to the cells to guarantee the FR QoS. Therefore proper policing algorithm is essential to the integrated FR traffic mechanism. The evaluations are done with simulations in comparison of existing FR algorithms, ATM VBR and GFR policing algorithms, and the proposed algorithm.

  • In this paper, we propose a real-time bandwidth allocation scheme of multiplexed VBR MPEG video sequences over ATM network. In order to real time processing, multiplexed source is estimated by linear-prediction per measurement period. If the result CLR value were not sufficient, we proposed a overallocation method and a reallocation one to guarantee QoS. We used two kinds of sources, one is random multiplexed source made of foot different video sources, the other is the one considered the arrange of I frame in the sequence. With those sources, we analyzed the linear prediction, compared overallocation with reallocation method. As a result, in both schemes, the objected CLR value is achieved, the sufficient value COR under 10% when mp is over 1.8 sec, the utilization is over 0.9. Especially, the COR value of the reallocation scheme is better at the same condition.

  • In this paper, we propose a customer premise platform for processing multimedia data service on the ATM network. The proposed platform has a specific AAL2 processor that includes AAL2 protocol and scheduler algorithm so as to off-load large potion of burden from host processor and make it easy to process multimedia data from the ATM network in real time compared with conventional platform in which AAL/ATM tasks are processed by software. The ATS scheduler that is implemented based on 2-level time slot ring provides a simple and efficient method for scheduling data of VBR-rt, UBR and CBR traffics. TMS320C5402 DSP is used to process voice-related tasks such as voice compression and voice packet manupulation and AAL2 processor is implemented on $0.35\;{\mu}m$ process line. We implemented the customer premise equipment for VoDSL service and tested the proposed platform on a test bed network. The experimental results show that the proposed equipment has the call success rate of $97\%$ at least and provides voice service of toll-qualify.

  • As a standard of WMNs, IEEE 802.11s supports two kinds of MAC algorithm: a mandatory EDCA used by IEEE 802.11e and an optional MCCA. While EDCA classifies traffic according to four Access Categories (AC) and offer differentiated service using a classified priority, MCCA can guarantee the specific bandwidth of users with a TDMA-style bandwidth reservation scheme between mesh routers. In case that a flow is VBR traffic of a multimedia application, MCCA has disadvantage that the reserved bandwidth does not be used entirely, though it guarantees required bandwidth of users and fairness using bandwidth reservation with neighbors' node. In this paper, we showed a problem that is wastes the reserved bandwidth when MCCA is enabled and proposed a new scheduling algorithm to prevent waste of bandwidth and to improve network utilization effectively, named Resource Sharing Round Robin (RSRR) scheduling. Finally we showed simulation results that performance of a proposed RSRR is better than the legacy MCCA through NS-2 simulation.

A Study on Effective Bandwidth Algorithms for Mass Broadcasting Service with Channel Bonding (채널 결합 기반 대용량 방송서비스를 위한 유효 대역폭 추정 알고리즘에 대한 연구)

  • parallel transmitting system with channel bonding method have been proposed to transmit mass content such as UHD(Ultra High Definition) in HFC(Hybrid Fiber Coaxial) networks. However, this system may lead to channel resource problem because the system needs many channels to transmit mass content. In this paper, we analyze three effective bandwidth approximation algorithms to use the bonding channel efficiently. These algorithms are the effective bandwidth of Gaussian approximation method algorithm proposed by Guerin, the effective bandwidth based on statistics of video frames proposed by Lee and the effective bandwidth based on Gaussian traffic proposed by Nagarajan. We also evaluate compatibility of algorithms to the mass broadcasting service. OPNET simulator is used to evaluate the performance of the algorithms. For accuracy of simulation, we make mass source from real HD broadcasting stream.

  • One of the most important matters in designing network and realizing service, is to grip on the traffic characteristics. Conventional traffic prediction and analysis used the models which based on the Poisson or Markovian. Recently, experimental research on the LAN, WAN and VBR traffic properties have been pointed rut that they weren't able to display actual real traffic specificities because the models based on the Poisson assumption had been underestimated the long range dependency of network traffic and self-similar peculiarities, it has been lately presented that the new approach method using self-similarity characteristics as similar as the real traffic models. Therefore, in this paper, we generated self-similar data traffic like real traffic as background load. On the existing ABR congestion control algorithm, we analyzed by classify into ACR, buffer utilization. cell drop rate, transmission throughput with the representative EFCI, ERICA, EPRCA and NIST twitch algorithm to show the efficient reaction about the burst traffic.
