A Multichannel System for Virtual 3-D Sound Rendering (입체음장재현을 위한 멀티채널시스템)

  • Currently a multichannel system for virtual 3-D sound rendering is under development. Robust sound image formation and smooth real time interactivity are main design Points. The system utilizes VBAP algorithm as virtual sound image positioning. Overall system settings can be easily configured. We developed software, RIMA. as a driving Program of the system. At this stage, it is possible to position virtual sound images at arbitrary positions in three-dimensional space. The characteristics of the system are discussed. The system has been applied to the KAIST Bicycle Simulator to generate the virtual sound field.

Vector Base Amplitude Panning Based Noise Control Method for Improving the Amenity in Building Environment (실내 환경에서 쾌적성 향상을 위한 Vector Base Amplitude Panning 기반의 소음제어)

  • A variety of noise control methods have been developed as an interest on noise issues increases. Among them, noise control methods using masking effect, a phenomenon to reduce the ability to notice the unwanted sound by proper sound, to implement a pleasant sound environment have been studied under the name of soundscape. We proposed a novel vector base amplitude panning(VBAP) based noise control method to apply to the building environment. The proposed method could improve the amenity inside the building to reproduce the sounds with excellent masking effect on the incoming path of noise using the control speakers, considering the direction of noise source. The directional masking sounds can be generated by using VBPA technique. To verify the performance of the proposed method, we carried out the subjective test for the degree of amenity according to direction of the masking sound. Subjective test results showed that it is possible to improve the amenity inside the building by controlling the direction of masking sound considering the human's auditory characteristic.

Amplitude Panning Algorithm for Virtual Sound Source Rendering in the Multichannel Loudspeaker System (다채널 스피커 환경에서 가상 음원을 생성하기 위한 레벨 패닝 알고리즘)

  • In this paper, we proposes the virtual sound source panning algorithm in the multichannel system. Recently, High-definition (HD) and Ultrahigh-definition (UHD) video formats are accepted for the multimedia applications and they provide the high-quality resolution pixels and the wider view angle. The audio format also needs to generate the wider sound field and more immersive sound effects. However, the conventional stereo system cannot satisfy the desired sound quality in the latest multimedia system. Therefore, the various multichannel systems that can make more improved sound field generation are proposed. In the mutichannel system, the conventional panning algorithms have acoustic problems about directivity and timbre of the virtual sound source. To solve these problems in the arbitrary positioned multichannel loudspeaker system, we proposed the virtual sound source panning algorithm using multiple vectors base nonnegative amplitude panning gains. The proposed algorithm can be easily controlled by the gain control function to generate an accurate localization of the virtual sound source and also it is available for the both symmetric and asymmetric loudspeakers format. Its performance of sound localization is evaluated by subjective tests comparing with conventional amplitude panning algorithms, e.g. VBAP and MDAP, in the symmetric and asymmetric formats.

  • In this paper, an interpolation method of HRTF (Head-Related Transfer Function) is proposed for small-sized measurement data set, especially. The proposed algorithm is based on acoustic modeling of HRTFs, and the algorithm tries to interpolate the HRTFs via estimation the model coefficients. However, the estimation of the model coefficients is hard if there is lack of measurement points, so the algorithm solves the problem by a data augmentation using the VBAP (Vector Based Amplitude Panning). Therefore, the proposed algorithm consists of two steps, which are data augmentation step based on VBAP and model coefficients estimation step by least squares method. The proposed algorithm was evaluated by a simulation with a measured data from CIPIC (Center for Image Processing and Integrated Computing) HRTF database, and the simulation results show that the proposed algorithm reduces mean-squared error by 1.5 dB ~ 4 dB than the conventional algorithms.

Bridge-vehicle coupled vibration response and static test data based damage identification of highway bridges

  • In order to identify damage of highway bridges rapidly, a method for damage identification using dynamic response of bridge induced by moving vehicle and static test data is proposed. To locate damage of the structure, displacement energy damage index defined from the energy of the displacement response time history is adopted as the indicator. The displacement response time histories of bridge structure are obtained from simulation of vehicle-bridge coupled vibration analysis. The vehicle model is considered as a four-degree-of-freedom system, and the vibration equations of the vehicle model are deduced based on the D'Alembert principle. Finite element method is used to discretize bridge and finite element model is set up. According to the condition of displacement and force compatibility between vehicle and bridge, the vibration equations of the vehicle and bridge models are coupled. A Newmark-${\beta}$ algorithm based professional procedure VBAP is developed in MATLAB, and used to analyze the vehicle-bridge system coupled vibration. After damage is located by employing the displacement energy damage index, the damage extent is estimated through the least-square-method based model updating using static test data. At last, taking one simply supported bridge as an illustrative example, some damage scenarios are identified using the proposed damage identification methodology. The results indicate that the proposed method is efficient for damage localization and damage extent estimation.
