Induction of Apoptosis by Methanol Extract of Endlicheria anomala in Human Lung and Liver Cancer Cells (Endlicheria anomala 메탄올 추출물에 의한 인체 폐암세포주와 간암세포주의 자가사멸 유도)

  • Endlicheria anomala, a neotropical plant, is found in northern South America and the Amazon region. It is traditionally used to remove poisons and cure gangrene. According to recent data, this plant has diverse biological properties such as anti-oxidative, anti-inflammatory and anti-melanogenic properties. However, the anti-cancer effect of E. anomala and its molecular mechanisms remain unclear. In this study, we examined the anti-cancer effect and the active mechanism of methanol extract of E. anomala (MEEA) in human lung adenocarcinoma cells (A549) and human liver cancer cells (HepG2). Our data revealed that MEEA showed cytotoxic activity in a dose-dependent manner and induced apoptosis both in A549 and HepG2 cells. We verified evidences of apoptosis via formation of chromatin condensation, apoptotic body and accumulation of cells in the subG1 phase. Following observed apoptosis-related phenomena, we found that the induction of apoptosis by MEEA was associated with the increase of tumor suppressor p53 and cyclin-dependent kinase inhibitor p21 (WAF1/CIP1) expression. Furthermore, MEEA-induced apoptosis was characterized with proteolytic activation of caspase-3, degradation of poly ADP ribose polymerase (PARP), and up-regulation of pro-apoptotic Bax expression. Taken together, these findings indicate that MEEA may have potential cancer therapeutic utility in A549 and HepG2 cells.

Bioequivalence of Cefaclor (250 mg) Capsule (세파클러 250 mg 캅셀의 생물학적 동등성)

  • This study was carried out to compare the bioavailability of $Ceclex^{(R)}$ (test drug, cefaclor 250 mg/capsule) with that of $Ceclor^{(R)}$ (reference drug) and to estimate the pharmacokinetic parameters of cefaclor in healthy Korean adult. The bioavailability was examined on 20 healthy volunteers who received a single dose (250 mg) of each drug in the fasting state in a randomized balanced 2-way crossover design. After dosing, blood samples were collected for a period of 6hours. Plasma concentrations of cefaclor were determined using HPLC with UV detection. The pharmacokinetic parameters $(AUC_{0-6hr},\;C_{max},\;T_{max},\;AUC_{int},\;K_e,\;t_{1/2},\;Vd)$ F, and CL/F) were calculated with non-compartmental pharmacokinetic analysis. The ANOVA test was utilized for the statistical analysis of the $T_{max},\;log-transformed\;AUC_{0-6hr}\;log-transformed\;C_{max},\;t_{l/2},\;V_d/F$, and CL/F. The ratios of geometric means of AUC0-6hr and $C_{max}$ between test drug and reference drug were $103.2\%\;(6.74\;{\mu}g{\cdot}hr/ml\;vs\;6.53{\pm}g{\cdot}hr/ml)\;and\;100.4\%\;(4.85\;{\mu}g\ml\;vs\;4.82\;{\mu}g/ml)$, respectively. The $T_{max}$ of test drug and reference drug were $0.9\pm0.38\;hr\;and\;0.83\pm0.34$ hrs, respectively. The $90\%$ confidence intervals of mean difference of logarithmic transformed $AUC_{0-6h},\;and\;C_{max}$ were log $0.98{\sim}log$ 1.08 and log $0.88{\sim}log1.15$, respectively. It shows that the bioavailability of test drug is equivalent with that of reference drug. The estimated half-life of this study was longer $(1.21\pm0.27\;hrs\;vs\;0.5-1\;hr)$, the Vd/F was larger $(68.89\pm25.72L$ vs 24.9L), and the CL/F was higher $(38.62\pm7.09\;L/hr$ vs 24.9 L/hr) than the previously reported values.

Study on solubilization of sewage sludge using electrolysis techniques (전기분해에 의한 하수슬러지 가용 효과 연구)

  • Although sludge production has been increased due to the number of the wastewater treatment plants expanded, needs of the techniques for the sludge reduction and disposal has been issued importantly because the sludge dumping to ocean is prohibited from 2012 by the London Dumping Convention. Therefore, the sludge solubilization using electrolysis as an alternative techniques for the sludge disposal was carried out in this study. Iridium coated titanium based insoluble electrodes were used and 20 volt was applied to the electrolysis reactor using DC power supply. Supernatants of the treated sludge was monitored: The soluble COD, TN, TP of it was increased to 151%, 22% and 6% respectively. And the sludge floc size distribution was changed, that is, the flocs ranged from 0.1 to 1.0 ${\mu}m$ were increased. All of these results indicate that the cells were lysed and the internal matters bursted out of the cell after electrolysis. As well as the reduction of the sludge production, the soluble organic matters from the cells could be used as an external carbon sources in the advanced wastewater treatment plants.

A study of Korean Physical Therapist's Attitudes and Beliefs on Korean Government's National Long Term Care Insurance Program (노인 장기요양 보험 제도에 대한 부산광역시 물리치료사들의 인식도 조사)

  • Objective: This study was conducted to describe physical therapists' attitudes and beliefs towards Korean Government's National Long Term Care Insurance Program implemented last July 2008. Design: A survey research. Methodology: Participants were 143 physical therapists working in General Hospitals or University Hospitals in Busan, Korea. Each of the participants completed a questionnaire which was comprised of 22 questions. Among the 22 questions, 7 of these were independent variables such as gender, age, career, etc. while 15 of these questions were dependent variables such as the subject's expectations and reactions on the said program, opinions of the participants on the impact of the program to old people's families and relatives, participant's sentiments on social effects of this program to the society, etc. Data collection was conducted from the $20^{th}$ of July to the $5^{th}$ of August, 2008. Data were analyzed by Chi-square test, frequency and cross tabs using SPSS/PC program. Results: Based on the survey conducted, it showed that 50.3% were female respondents, 53.8% were on their twenties, 31.5% of the total respondents were married and that a percentage of 82.4% had working experiences below 10 years. About 80.4% of respondents were satisfied of their jobs and 32.4%of the respondents graduated from three - year college degree, 49.3% of the respondents graduated from four-year college degree. 95.1% of the total respondents knew the existence of the national long term care insurance program of the government and almost 78% got the information of the said program via internet, news paper or T.V. About 86% of the respondents believe that there will be future improvements in the quality of life in Korea through the said program and 82% said that there will be an increase sense of responsibility among family members to take care of their old relatives. 67.2 % of respondents believe that problems regarding old people will be solved through the government's national long term care insurance program. In aspect of Physical Therapy, 50% of the respondents expected generation of more jobs especially to physical therapists and 95% of the respondents want to work in any position in the said program especially those are more experienced ones. Conclusion: Physical Therapists in Korea are aware of the existence of the National Long Term Care Insurance Program of the Korean Government. Based on the gathered results from the survey, many experienced physical therapists of the country wanted to acquire positions in the said program especially that their expertise are needed in the said field. Through this study, it is evident that many physical therapists of the country have positive vibes on the said program and are optimistic on the outcomes of the said insurance program.

Dietary and Non-dietary Factors Related to Bone Mineral Density in Female College Students (여대생의 골밀도와 식이 및 비식이 요인들 간의 상관성)

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate correlations between bone mineral density (BMD) and dietary and non-dietary factors in female college students. The BMD of the subjects (n = 38) was measured using DEXA (Dual Energy X-ray Absorptiometry) at lumbar spine and three femoral sites including femoral neck, ward's triangle, and femoral trochanter. Three-day 24-hour dietary recall data were collected from each subject to assess consumption levels of nutrients and food groups. The mean (${\pm}SD$) values of age, age of menarche, height, weight, body mass index (BMI), waist-to-hip ratio (WHR), fat mass, and % body fat of the subjects were 21.34 (${\pm}1.73$) years, 13.1 (${\pm}1.2$) years, 161.3 (${\pm}5.0$) cm, 53.7 (${\pm}7.2$) kg, 20.6 (${\pm}2.6$) $kg/m^2$, 0.80 (${\pm}0.04$), 15.4 (${\pm}4.4$) kg, and 28.2 (${\pm}4.7$), respectively. The BMD values of lumbar spine, femoral neck, ward's triangle, and femoral trochanter as T-value were $1.150{\pm}0.13\;g/cm^2$, $0.932{\pm}0.11\;g/cm^2$, $0.850{\pm}0.13\;g/cm^2$, and $0.721{\pm}0.10\;g/cm^2$, respectively. The daily mean energy intake of the subjects was 1660.6 kcal. The intake levels of carbohydrate, calcium, iron, vitamin C, and folic acid were lower than the KDRIs, while those of fat, phosphorus, sodium, vitamin A, and vitamin $B_6$ were higher than the KDRIs. Significantly negative correlation were detected between consumption of fat and oils and the BMD of all sites measured (p < 0.05). Potato and starch intake was negatively correlated to the BMD of femoral neck and word's triangle (p < 0.05). The intake of cereals was found to be negatively correlated to the BMD of ward's triangle (p v 0.05). There was also negative correlation of intake of soybeans and products with the BMD of lumbar spine (p < 0.05). Weight and muscle mass were positively correlated to the BMD of both lumbar spine and femurs (p < 0.01). Significantly positive correlations between BMI, and fat mass and the BMD of lumbar spine were observed (p < 0.001). Additionally fat mass was positively correlated to the BMD of femoral neck. WHR and % body fat were positively correlated to the BMD of lumbar spine (p < 0.05). Negative correlation was found between a serum calcium level and the BMD of femoral neck (p < 0.05). In summary non-dietary factors generally showed significant correlations with the BMD of lumbar spine, while several dietary factors showed significant correlations with the BMD of femurs.

  • The fuel cell generation convert fuel source, and gas directly to electricity in an electro-chemical process. Unlike traditional and conventional turbine engines, the process of fuel cell generation do not burn the fuel and run pistons or shafts, and it has not revolutionary machine, so have fewer efficiency losses, low emissions and no noisy moving parts. A high power density allows fuel cells to be relatively compact source of electric power, beneficial in application with space constraints. In this system, the fuel cell itself is nearly small-sized by other components of the system such as the fuel reformer and power inverter. So, the fuel cell energy's stationary fuel cells produce reliable electrical power for commercial and industrial companies as well as utilities. In this paper, a fuel cell system has been modeled using PSCAD/EMTDC to analyze its electric signals and characteristics. Also the power quality of the fuel cell system has been evaluated and the problems which can be occurred during its operation have been studied by modeling it more detailed. Particularly, we have placed great importance on its power quality and signal characteristics when it is connected with a power grid.

Ferromagnetism and Anomalous Hall Effect of $TiO_2$-based superlattice films for Dilute Magnetic Semiconductor Applications

  • For use in spintronic materials, dilute magnetic semiconductors (DMS) are under consideration as spin injectors for spintronic devices[l]. $TiO_2$-based DMS doped by a cobalt, iron, and manganese et al. was recently reported to show ferromagnetic properties, even at temperatures above 300K and the magnetic ordering was explained in terms of carrier-induced ferromagnetism, as observed for a III-V based DMS. An anomalous Hall effect (AHE) and co-occurance of superparamagnetism in reduced Co-doped rutile $TiO_{2-\delta}$ films have also been reported[2]. Metal segregation in the reduced metal-doped rutile $TiO_2-\delta$ films still remains as problems to solve the intrinsic DMS properties. Superlattice films have been proposed to get dilute magnetic semiconductor (DMS) with intrinsicroom-temperature ferromagnetism. For a $TiO_2$-based DMS superlattice structure, each layer was alternately doped by two different transition metals (Fe and Mn) and deposited to a thickness of approximately $2.7\;{\AA}$ on r-$Al_2O_3$(1102) substrates by pulsed laser deposition. The r-$Al_2O_3$(1102) substrates with atomic steps and terrace surface were obtained by thermal annealing. Samples of $Ti_{0.94}Fe_{0.06}O_2$(TiFeO), $Ti_{0.94}Mn_{0.06}O_2$(TiMnO), and $Ti_{0.94}(Fe_{0.03}Mn_{0.03})O_2$ show a low remanent magnetization and coercive field, as well as superparamagnetic features at room temperature. On the other hand, superlattice films (TiFeO/TiMnO) show a high remanent magnetization and coercive field. An anomalous Hall effect in superlattice films exhibits hysisteresis loops with coercivities corresponding to those in the ferromagnetic Hysteresis loops. The superlattice films composed of alternating layers of $Ti_{0.94}Fe_{0.06}O_2$ and $Ti_{0.94}Mn_{0.06}O_2$ exhibit intrinsic ferromagnetic properties for dilute magnetic semiconductor applications.

  • 21 세기에 접어들면서 인터넷을 통한 정보 통신의 발달과 개인 휴대용 이동 통신기기의 활발한 보급에 따라 휴대형 전자기기들의 소형화와 고성능화로 나아가고 있다. 이러한 전자기기에 사용될 IC의 내장 메모리 또한 집적화 및 고속화, 저 전력화가 이루어져야 한다. 이러한 전자기기들에 필수적인 압전 세라믹스 부품 중 압전 부저 및 기타 음향 부품등을 각종 전자기기와 무선 전화기에 채택함으로써 압전 부품에 대한 수요와 생산이 계속 증가할 것으로 전망된다. 이처럼 압전 세라믹스를 이용한 그 응용 범위는 대단히 방대하며, 현재 모든 압전 부품들은 PZT 계열 재료로 만들어지고 있고, 차후 모두 비납계열 재료로 대체될 것이 확실시된다. Pb의 환경오염은 이미 오래전부터 큰 문제점으로 인식되고 있었으며 그 일례로 미국의 캘리포니아 주에서는 1986년부터 약 800종의 유해물질, 그 중에서도 Pb 사용을 300ppm 이하로 규제하는 Proposition 65를 제정하여 실행하고 있다. 그리고 2003년 2월에 EU (European Union) 에서 발표한 전자산업에 관한 규제 사항중 하나인 위험물질 사용에 관한 지칭 (Restriction of Hazardous Substance, RoHS) 에 의하면, 2006 년 7월부터 전기 전자 제품에 있어서 위험 물질인 Pb을 포함한 중금속 물질(카드늄, 수은, 6가 크롬, 브롬계 난연재)의 사용을 금지한다고 발표하였다. 비록 전자세라믹 부품에 함유된 Pb는 예외 사항으로 두었지만 대체 가능한 물질이 개발되면 전자세라믹 부품에서도 Pb의 사용을 금지한다고 규정하였다. 더욱이 일본은 2005 년부터 Pb 사용을 금지시켰다. 이와 같이 Pb가 환경에 미치는 영향 때문에 비납계 강유전 물질 및 압전 세라믹스 재료에 대한 연구가 전 세계적으로 활발히 진행되고 있다. 본 연구에서는 비납계 강유전체의 patterning을 위해서, NKN 박막을 고밀도 플라즈마원인 ICP를 이용하여 식각 mechanism을 연구하고, 식각변수에 따른 식각 공정을 최적화에 대하여 연구하였다. 가스 혼합비에 따라 식각 할때 700 W의 RF 전력과 - 150 V의 직류 바이어스 전압을 인가하였고, 공정 압력은 2 Pa, 기판 온도는 $23^{\circ}C$로 고정하였다. 식각 속도는 Tencor사의 Alpha-step 500을 이용하여 측정되었으며 식각 시 NKN 박막 표면과 라디칼과의 화학적인 반응을 분석하고 식각 메커니즘을 규명하기 위하여 XPS(x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy)를 사용하였다.

A STUDY ON THE TENSILE BOND STRENGTH TO TOOTH STRUCTURE OF TOOTH COLORED MATERIALS ACCORDING TO FILLING METHODS AND LIGHT CURING UNITS (심미수복재의 수복방법과 광조사기기에 따른 치질과의 인장결합강도에 관한 연구)

  • The purpose of this study was to evaluate the tensile bond strength to tooth structure of composite resin and glass ionomer cement according to filling methods and light curing units. In this study, two class V cavities were prepared on the buccal surface of each tooth of 140 extracted human molars, and they were randomly assigned into 3 experimental groups with 40 teeth and control group with 20 teeth. And then, each experimental groups subdivided into 2 groups(A,B) according to light curing units. The cavities of each group were filled with the CLEARFIL FII self curing resin(Control Group), Z-100 light curing resin(Group 1), Vitremer$^{TM}$ light curing glass ionomer cement(Group 2) and Z-100 light curing resin over the Vitrebond$^{TM}$ liner(Group 3). And subdivided A Group used Argon Laser(SPECTRUM$^{TM}$, U.S.A.), B Group used XL 1,000 curing light (3M, U.S.A.). The specimens underwent temperature changed from $5^{\circ}C$ to $55^{\circ}C$ five hundred times. After thermocycling, specimens were stored in 100% relative humidity at $37^{\circ}C$ for 24 hours. And then, the tensile bond strength of specimens were calculated with Universal Testing Machine(AGS-100A, Japan). The results were as follows : 1. Among the experimental groups, the group 2-B showed the highest tensile bond strength ($18.89{\pm}7.80$) and the group 1-A showed the lowest tensile bond strength ($11.68{\pm}2.28$). There was significant difference between group 2-B and group 1-A(p<0.01). 2. Between the light curing units, the XL 1,000 unit showed higher tensile bond strength ($16.63{\pm}3.20$) than that of the Argon Laser unit ($13.73{\pm}2.30$). There was significant difference between XL 1,000 and Argon Laser(p<0.01). 3. About filling methods and materials, the group 2 showed the highest tensile bond strength ($17.56{\pm}1.89$) and the group 1 showed the lowest tensile bond strength($13.03{\pm}1.90$). There was significant difference between group 2 and group 1,3(p<0.01). In conclusion, the results showed that the glass-ionomer cement that cured by XL 1,000 light curing unit demonstrated significantly higher tensile bond strength than other curing unit and filling methods.

The Effect of Cellophane Film Packing on Quality of Semi-Salted and Dried Mackerel during Processing and Storage (셀로판 필름보장이 반염건고등어의 가공 및 저장중의 품질에 미치는 효과)

  • The preservative effect of cellophane film packing on the quality of semi-salted and dried mackerel was studied. The product(P) of semi-salted and dried mackerel was prepared from raw mackerel by filleting, cleaning, soaking in 15%9v/w) salt solution for 30min, draining, packing with cellophane film (PT# 300, thickness:$20{\mu}{\textrm}{m}$) and drying for 4 hrs at $40^{\circ}C$ in hot air dryer. The product (C) was also prepared without cellophane film packing after draining. The product (C) and (P) were stored at $5.0{\pm}0.5^{\circ}C$. After processing and during storage, moisture content of product (P) was higher than that of product (C), but contents of VBN(volatile basic nitrogen), amino nitrogen and TMA of product (P) on dry basis were lower than those of product (C). Viable cell count, TBA value, peroxide value and decreasing rate of polyenoic acid of product (P) were also lower than those of product (C). In sensory evaluation, the shelf life of product (C) was about 9 days and that of product (P) was about 14 days. From the results of chemical and sensory evaluation, it was concluded that cellophane film packing was a good condition for preserving the quality of semi-salted and dried mackerel.
