  • The sudden appearance and potential lethality of severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS)-associated coronavirus (SARS-CoV) in humans has resulted in a focusing of new attention on the determination of both its origins and evolution. The relationship existing between SARS-CoV and other groups of coronaviruses was determined via analyses of phylogenetic trees and comparative genomic analyses of the coronavirus genes: polymerase (Orflab), spike (S), envelope (E), membrane (M) and nucleocapsid (N). Although the coronaviruses are traditionally classed into 3 groups, with SARS-CoV forming a $4^{th}$ group, the phylogenetic position and origins of SARS-CoV remain a matter of some controversy. Thus, we conducted extensive phylogeneitc analyses of the genes common to all coronavirus groups, using the Neighbor-joining, Maximum-likelihood, and Bayesian methods. Our data evidenced largely identical topology for all of the obtained phylogenetic trees, thus supporting the hypothesis that the relationship existing between SARS-CoV and group 2 coronavirus is a monophyletic one. Additional comparative genomic studies, including sequence similarity and protein secondary structure analyses, suggested that SARS-Co V may bear a closer relationship with group 2 than with the other coronavirus groups. Although our data strongly suggest that group 2 coronaviruses are most closely related with SARS-CoV, further and more detailed analyses may provide us with an increased amount of information regarding the origins and evolution of the coronaviruses, most notably SARS-CoV.

  • This study presents a stable start-up strategy for v/f scalar-controlled permanent magnet synchronous motors (PMSMs). The v/f-controlled PMSMs easily lose synchronism under low-speed conditions if an insufficient stator voltage is applied to the machine due to errors in measured motor parameters and inverter nonlinearity, such as inverter dead time and on-state voltage drop. The proposed method adopts the I/f control method to ensure a stable start at low speeds and then switches to the v/f control method at medium speeds. A smooth transition method from I/f control to v/f control is proposed to minimize the oscillation of the stator current and rotor speed during transition. Moreover, the stability of the I/f and v/f control methods is analyzed using a small-signal model. Simulation and experimental results are provided to verify the performance of the proposed control strategy.

  • For two integers m, n with m $\leq$ n, an [m,n]-factor F in a graph G is a spanning subgraph of G with m $\leq$ d$\_$F/(v) $\leq$ n for all v ∈ V(F). In 1996, H. Enomoto et al. proved that every 3-connected Planar graph G with d$\_$G/(v) $\geq$ 4 for all v ∈ V(G) contains a [2,3]-factor. In this paper. we extend their result to all 3-connected locally finite infinite planar graphs containing no unbounded faces.

  • Vehicle communication can facilitate efficient coordination among vehicles on the road and enable future vehicular applications such as vehicle safety enhancement, infotainment, or even autonomous driving. In the $3^{rd}$ Generation Partnership Project (3GPP), many studies focus on long term evolution (LTE)-based vehicle communication. Because vehicle speed is high enough to cause severe channel distortion in vehicle-to-vehicle (V2V) environments. We can utilize channel estimation methods to approach a reliable vehicle communication systems. Conventional channel estimation schemes can be categorized as least-squares (LS), decision-directed channel estimation (DDCE), spectral temporal averaging (STA), and smoothing methods. In this study, we propose a smart channel estimation scheme in LTE-based V2V environments. The channel estimation scheme, based on an LTE uplink system, uses a demodulation reference signal (DMRS) as the pilot symbol. Unlike conventional channel estimation schemes, we propose an adaptive smoothing channel estimation scheme (ASCE) using quadratic smoothing (QS) of the pilot symbols, which estimates a channel with greater accuracy and adaptively estimates channels in data symbols. In simulation results, the proposed ASCE scheme shows improved overall performance in terms of the normalized mean square error (NMSE) and bit error rate (BER) relative to conventional schemes.

  • This paper proposes a technique to analyze the flatness characteristics of the attenuator at 10Hz to $50\text\tiny{MHz}$ on the basis of $1\text\tiny{kHz}$ using a Thermal Voltage Converter and AC measurement standard. In the proposed technique, the input voltage of the attenuator for each measuring frequency is supplied at the same rate as $1\text\tiny{kHz}$ using TVC, and the flatness characteristics of the attenuator are analyzed by the voltage variation indicated in the AC measurement standard. The results of the analysis of the attenuator flatness characteristics show that the maximum uncertainty of $866{\mu}V/V$ can be measured from $10\text\tiny{dB}$ to $70\text\tiny{dB}$ and the uncertainty is reduced by about 37% compared to $2.31\text\tiny{mV}$/V using the network measurement method. The improved attenuator flatness characteristic values can be applied to the frequency flatness calibration from 2.2V to 2.2mV at the low voltage of the AC measurement standard.

  • The production of doxorubicin by a mutant of Streptomyces peucetius subsp. caesius was studied. The optimal culture conditions, such as inoculum size and medium composition were established to improve the productivity of doxorubicin. The optimal medium composition was found to be 4% maltose, 0.5% HEPES, 0.02% $K_2HPO_4$, 0.01% $MgSO_4$. As an antiform agent, 0.001% KG(10% Adekanol+10% Silicone) was suitable one among various agents. Culture was carried out in 2.5 L jar-fermenter with different aeration rates of 1.5, 1.0, and 1.5 v/v min. The maximum production of doxorubicin(29 mg/l) was obtained at 1.5 v/v min of aeration rate, and even at 1.0 v/v min, the production of doxorubicin was increased up to 15% compared with that of shake-flask culture.

  • The pharmacokinetic properties of KR-V compounds, recently developed as new anti-HIV agents, were studied after i.v. and p.o. administration in rats. The concentrations of the KR-V series were determined in rat plasma using an high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC)-UV detection system. Of the 19 KR-V compounds investigated in the present study, only KR-V 3, 10, 14, 16 and 18-1 showed oral bioavailability. The plasma concentration-time data could be adequately described by an one-compartment open model. In the i.v. kinetic study (10mg/kg), the CLt of KR-V 3, 10, 14 and 16 (>4L/hr/kg) were significantly higher than that of KR-V 18-1 (1.1 L/hr/kg). The AUC of KR-V 18-1 was greater ($8.97{\mu}g{\cdot}hr/ml$) than that of the other compounds, but the Vd (0.58 L/kg) was lower. In the p.o. kinetic study (50mg/kg), although the t-1/2 of KR-V 18-1 was shorter than that of the other compounds, the AUC ($3.659{\mu}g{\cdot}hr/ml)$ and $C_{max}(1.891{\mu}g/ml$) were markedly higher. In a seperated in vitro experiment, only KR-V 18-1, of the 5 compounds with bioavailibility, exhibits potent activity against HIV-1 mutant strains. Therefore, KR-V 18-1 is expected to become a new potent anti-AIDS drug candidate/lead compound.

  • In this paper, a wide-input range CMOS multi-mode rectifier for wireless power transfer system is presented. The output voltage of multi-mode rectifier is sensed by comparator and switches are controlled based on it. The mode of multi-mode rectifier is automatically selected by the switches among full-wave rectifier, 1-stage voltage multiplier and 2-stage voltage multiplier. In full-wave rectifier mode, the rectified output DC voltage ranges from 9 V to 19 V for a input AC voltage from 10 V to 20 V. However, the input-range of the multi-mode rectifier is more improved than that of the conventional full-wave rectifier by 5V, so the rectified output DC voltage ranges from 7.5 V to 19 V for a input AC voltage from 5 V to 20 V. The power conversion efficiency of the multi-mode rectifier is 94 % in full-wave rectifier mode. The proposed multi-mode rectifier is fabricated in a $0.35{\mu}m$ CMOS process with an active area of $2500{\mu}m{\times}1750{\mu}m$.

  • The removal of arsenic(V) using four different natural minerals were evaluated. Parameters like contact time, pH, adsorbent dosages, and As(V) concentration were optimized. The kinetics of adsorption was observed to be fast and reached equilibrium within 2h. As(V) adsorption on studied minerals was dependent on pH and followed a pseudo-second-order reaction model. For kaolin, maximum adsorption was found at pH 5.0. Whereas, in case of other three minerals, a pH range of 6.0-7.0 was found to be the best for As(V) adsorption. The maximum adsorption capacity (Q) was calculated by fitting Langmuir equation to the adsorption isotherms obtained under a specified condition. From the slope of best fit, the Q values were calculated to be 2.07, 2.15, 1.95 and 0.86 mg As(V)/g of bauxite, wad, iron ore and kaolin, respectively. Desorption of As(V) from loaded materials was dependent on the type of leaching reagents used. Based on the results, it was found that among the studied natural minerals, wad was the best As(V) adsorbent.

  • To assess the insulation deterioration of stator windings, diagnostic and AC breakdown tests were performed on the eleven high voltage (HV) motors rated at 6kV. After completing the diagnostic tests, the AC overvoltage test was performed by gradually increasing the voltage applied to the stator windings until electrical insulation failure occurred, to obtain the breakdown voltage. Stator winding of motors 1, 3, and 8 failed at above rated voltage at 14 kV, 13.8kV, and 16.4kV, respectively. The breakdown voltage of three motors was higher than expected for good quality windings in 6kV motors. Based on deterioration evaluation criteria, the stator winding insulation of eleven HV motors are confirmed to be in good condition. The turning point of the current, $P_{i2}$, in the AC current vs. voltage characteristics occurred between 5kV and 6kV, and the breakdown voltage was low between 13.8kV and 16.4kV. There was a strong correlation between the breakdown voltage and various electrical characteristics in diagnostic tests including Pi2.
