  • The increase of $CO_2$ emission by increasing of fossil fuel usage has been understood a major cause of global warming. The supply of electric energy is heavily dependent on the massive thermal power and nuclear power plant before developing the renewable energy to supply the electric energy stably at a low price. The large and sound forged components of pressure vessel, turbine and generator are widely used in power plant such as wind power, hydroelectric power generation, nuclear power and thermal power plant. This paper is discussed the trend of manufacturing technology for pressure vessel and turbine to satisfy the required condition of utility company. It is also introduced a strategy of forging industry to cope with carbon tax.

  • The main purpose of this research is to develop a program supporting landscape planting design on AutoCAD basis using AutoLISP and DCL language. Current CAD use in landscape architecture field is mainly focused on customizing plant symbols for supporting two dimensional drafting rather than three dimensional consideration. This program is composed of eight module a such as PLANT module for inserting plant symbols, LABEL module for labeling task, SIMULATION module for simulating plant growth and seasonal color variation, TABLE module for generating plant table automatically, BUILDING module, BLOCK module, UTILITY module for deleting, transforming, shading symbols and DB MANAGER module for manipulating data. Design automation ability using automatic object recognition technique in this program allows AutoCAD to be used as a design tool in addition to its main role as a drafting tool through supporting landscape designers to generate many alternatives in the early phase of design.

  • In this study, EMTP(Electromagnetic Transients Program) which is one of the most well-known computer simulation methods is used to collect the data for a power plant fault. EMTP is the program for an interpretation of the phenomena of electric transients, and is designed to manifest the data of the electric current and voltage etc. at the time of a power plant fault. By EMTP, I analyze the properties of the heat energy which are transferred from the electrics when a power plant fault brings out. In terms of the results of this study, it is able to measure the heat energy at a power plant fault (power transformer) and to be acquired of the related data. And moreover, these data are expected to be used as a standard for the protection of the fire owing to a high voltage power transformer fault.

  • A study for process design to curtail the utility consumption during residual styrene monomer recovery in an ABS polymerization process was carried out. Among different techniques for residual monomer recovery, the steam stripping is dominantly employed in industries. The existing process, however, consumes a large amount of utility (steam and cooling water), and this study focused on the design of a new process that can substantially spare the utility consumption. A new process was configured to utilize the latent heat of the stripping steam, which is condensed with the monomer using cooling water after exiting the stripper. The condenser was modified to use vacuum state water as coolant and to generate vacuum state steam using the latent heat of the stripping steam. The steam is injected to the stripper as the stripping steam after upgrading using a compressor. Through this modification, consumption of steam and also cooling water could be significantly reduced at some expense of electricity for compressor operation.

  • This study introduces a software for real-time assessment of combustion stability for utility gas turbines. The software was written with LabView, and implemented the time-domain kurtosis as a parameter to proactively access the instantaneous combustion stability during operation of the industrial gas turbine. The simple time-domain assessment algorithm incorporated in the software is advantageous over conventional frequency-domain signal processing of dynamic pressure signal since it reduces the computational cost, thereby making the algorithm more appropriate for real-time monitoring of combustion stability. Benchmark data obtained from a model gas turbine combustor were used for the reproducibility test of the software. The assessment obtained from the software agreed well with previously published results, indicating that incorporation of the software could enhance the performance of systems monitoring the combustion stability for gas turbines during power generation.

  • An optimal soot blowing system has been developed for an optimal operation of power utility boilers by both minimization of the use of steam and the number of soot blowers worked during soot blowing. Traditionally, the soot blowing system has been operated manually by operators. However, it causes the reduction of power and thermal performance degradation because all soot blowers installed in the plant should be worked simultaneously even there are lots of tubes those are not contaminated by slagging or fouling. Heat transfer area is divided into four groups, furnace, convection area including superheater, reheater and economizer, and air preheater in the present study. The condition of cleanness of the tubes is calculated by several parameters obtained by sensors. Then, a part of soot blowers works automatically where boiler tubes are contaminated. This system has been applied in a practical power plant. Therefore, comparison has been done between this system and manual operation and the results are discussed.

  • The pulverized coal combustion behavior in the utility boiler is very complex since so many physical and chemical processes happen in it, simultaneously. The mixing of pulverized coal with combustion air plays an important role in achieving the efficient combustion and stable boiler operation. The distribution of combustion air supplied to the furnace through the windbox damper system has not been clearly known since the individual measurements of air flow for each air nozzle were not possible, yet. The present study describes the CFD modelling of windbox damper system and aims to obtain the air flow rates and pressure loss coefficients across the present five damper systems, respectively. The one dimensional flow network model has been also established to get air flow distributions across the windbox damper, and applied to the actual plant operation condition. Compared with the designed air flow distribution, the modelled one gives a reasonable agreement. For the actual plant operation, the predicted air flow distribution at each air nozzle is differed with the designed data and strongly affected by the individual opening angle.

  • Korean utility has utilized a Periodic Safety Review (PSR) that assesses the cumulative effects of plant aging, modifications, operating experience, technical developments, and site characteristics since 2000. In particular, the assessment and management of plant aging is one of the major areas in PSR. It includes identification of critical Systems, Structures, and Components (SSCs) for aging, assessment of aging effects, and implementation of aging management programs. Since the PSR system was introduced based on the atomic energy acts and related laws, PSRs of eight sets for 12 Nuclear Power Plants (NPPs) that have been operating more than 10 years have been completed. PSRs of two sets for 4 NPPs are currently being carried out. The utility has confirmed that domestic NPPs have been operated safely through these PSRs and have implemented the follow-up corrective activities to increase the nuclear safety. In this paper, the status of PSR implementation is discussed and improvement programs to conduct PSR follow-up corrective activities efficiently for NPPs are suggested based on experiences with aging assessments.

  • This paper presents a novel optimization method for the air- and gas-supplying network comprised of several air compression systems and air and gas streams in an industrial chemical plant. The optimization is based on the hybrid model developed by Han and $Han^1$ for predicting the power consumption of a compression system. A constrained optimization problem was formulated to minimize the total electric power consumption of all the compression systems in the air- and gas-supplying network under various operating constraints and was solved using a successive quadratic optimization algorithm. The optimization approach was applied to an industrial terephthalic acid manufacturing plant to achieve about 10% reduction in the total electric power consumption under varying ambient conditions.

  • The purpose of this study is an economic analysis of power plant utilities by comparing electricity generating cost including environmental costs. Considering the enormous role of electricity in the national economy, it is very important to study the effect of environmental regulation on the electricity sector. Because power utilities need for large investment during construction, operation and maintenance, and also require much construction lead time. Economic analysis is the important process in the electric system expansion planning. This paper compares the costs of electricity generation including environmental costs between a coal-fired power plant and an LNG combined cycle power plants. With the simulation, this study surveys the sensitivity of fuel prices, interest rate and carbon tax. In each case, this sensitivity can help to decide which utility is economically better in environmental regulation circumstance.
