  • This study was carried out to determine the effect of uterus shortening on the pvaries, the length of uterine horn and the recovery of embryos. The length of the shortened uterine horns increased more in part of uterine tip from connecting part for shortening than in base (P<0.05), and collection of embryos was also difficult in gilts because of its narrow pelvis. The embryos collected surgically from gilts with shortened uterine horns were developed into 2~8cells (87.5%) 3days and 4cell~morula (88.9%) 5days after mating.

  • In order to investigate the effects of Gamikyuchoolpajingtang(GMKCPT) and Gamibojungikgitand(GBIKT) on the ovarian tumor, the ultrasonographic appearance were studied in a few patients. the results obtained were follows : 1. The administration of Gamikyuchoolpajingtang(GMKCPT) reduced significantly tumor's size in corpus uteri and uterus. 2. The administration of Gamibojungikgitang(GBIKT) reduced significantly size in the ovarian. 3. The tumors of ovarian and uterus seem to be connected with Seven Emotions. 4. In this study, it is suggested big tumors over 10cm can be treated as herbal prescription. From above findings, it is suggested that Gamikyuchoolpajingtang(GMKCPT) and Gamibojungikgitang(GBIKT) seem to reduce significantly tumor's size.

  • While the technique of In Vitro Fertilization and Embryo Transfer has been proven undoutedly, it is for from reaching a consensus on the legal implication. Legal authority regarding clinical therapeutic In Vitro Fertilization and Embryo Transfer is, for all practical purpose, nonexistant. In this paper, it is discussed existing regulation dealing with In Vitro Fertilization and Embryo Transfer and related areas i.e. the regulation related medical technologies, the use of donor sperm, donor eggs, surrogate uteri, multiple pregnancy, miscarriages, extra embryos, the technique of cryopreservation. The legality of embryo donation, the responsibility for embryo preservation or destruction and the legal status of the embryos are surveyed. Finally the various legal theories that may give rise to physician liability in connection with clinical In Vitro Fertilization are also reviewed.

  • Superovulatory treatment with exogenous gonadotropins adversely affects the uterus through the disruption of the delicate balance of ovarian steroids (estrogens, progestins, androgens). To examine the uterine effects of this treatment, 189 rats were given 4IU, 20IU or 40IU pregnant mare',s serum gonadotropin(PMSG) at 28 days of age and sacrificed every 24h until day 10(D10) post injection. Long term uterine effects were examined in 12 rats treated with 4IU or 40IU PMSG and killed on D30. Adult rat uteri were examined to provide a reference for comparisons. Morphological and histological changes of control (4IU) uteri mimicked those of the adult on a comparable time-course form D2 to D5. Administration of superovulatory doses(20IU, 40IU) of PMSG produced stromal hypertrophy by D2 and focal papillary hyperplasia of the luminal epithelia by D3. Levels of $17{\beta}$-estradiol following 20IU and 40IU PMSG treatment were significantly(p<0.05, p<0.005) elevated above those of controls after D1. Androgen levels of both groups(20IU, 40IU) significantly p<0.05, p<005 increased from baseline on D1 and were maximum between D2 and D3. In the 20IU PMSG group, the hyperplasia gradually regressed after D3 and was absent by D10. The hyperplasia in the 40IU PMSG group, however, had become extensive by D6. It is suspected that preceding elevated levels of estrogen may be responsible for this progressive change. On D 4, the levels of $17{\beta}$-estradiol reached a maximum, which was significantly(p<0.001) greater than both the controls and 20IU PMSG-treated rats. Between D6 and D10, the hyperplasia in 40IU PMSG-treated rats partially regressed. Examination of uteri from D30 revealed no evidence of the hyperplasia. It is suggested that previous exposure to high levels of estrogen and androgens, secondary to superovulation, is possible cause for the observed hyperplasia.

  • Seventy-two crossbred gilts of approximately 33 kg initial weight were used in this study. The gilts were randomly assigned into three groups. The three dietary treatments were basal diet only (control group), basal diet+10 mg/kg lead, and basal diet+10 mg/kg lead+0.5% particulate montmorillonite (PM). The results showed that the addition of lead to the diet decreased significantly the body weight and feed efficiency, but PM could restore body weight and feed efficiency of gilts compared to the Pb exposure group. There were no significant differences in weights of ovaries and uteri with addition of either lead or PM to the diet. Supplementing the lead in the diet of gilts also significantly increased the concentration of lead in blood, decreased circulating lutenizing hormone (LH) and estradiol (E$_2$) levels in serum, the addition of PM to the diet effectively adsorbed and lowered lead concentration in the blood. These data suggested that lead disrupts the signals between the hypothalamus and pituitary gland in gilts, and possibly suppressed the secretion of relative growth hormone and sex hormone. On the other hand, PM may ameliorate Pb toxicity in pigs.

  • The incidence of cervical cancer has been gradually decreased since 1990, now it ranks the fourth most common carcinoma among Korean women in 2001. If squamous cell carcinomas in situ are included, the cervical cancer is still the most frequent tumor in Korean women. However, cervical cancer mortality in Korea has been decreased over the last 10 years in large part attributable to the introduction of the Papanicolaou test (Pap. test). The guidelines for the early detection of cervical cancer recommend women aged 30 and more to lake biennial screening with Pap. lest. According to the screening data of National Health Insurance Corporation (NHIC), 4,425 women (0.94%) showed an abnormal Pap among 473,395 cases tested in 2001; dysplasia was in 3,953 (0.84%) women, in situ carcinoma in 357 (0.075%) women, and invasive carcinoma in 115 (0.024%) women. The detection rates of abnormal Pap. were 4.21% in Korean Society for Cytopathology(KSC-2001), 1.37% (ASCUS : 0.26%, AGUS : 0.03%, LSIL : 0.45%, HSIL : 0.55%, Carcinoma 0.09%) in health check-up and 5.41% (ASCUS : 1.89%, AGUS . : 0.69%, LSIL : 1.39%, HSIL : 0.84%, Carcinoma : 0.64%) of patients in out-patient clinic without having history of cervical neoplasia at Hanyang University Hospital in 2002 Low rate of cervical cancer screening (34%) in Korea is mainly due to the lack of information for the Row income people regarding national cancer screening program. More adenuate budget by government and more man-power for precise screening, new guideline and system for management of the cervical cancer patients are required.

  • Signet ring cell carcinoma is a rare type of mucinous adenocarcinoma of the uterine cervix. To the best of our knowledge, there is no report on cytologlc findings of primary signet ring cell carcinoma of the uterine cervix in the literature. Recently, we experienced two cases of signet ring cell carcinoma of the uterine cervix. The finding of characteristic signet ring cells on cervicovaginal smear led to the diagnosis of signet ring cell carcinoma. However, primary signet ring cell carcinoma could not be cytologically distinguished from more common metastatic tumor. Therefore, diagnosis rests upon the recognition of signet ring cells and the absence of signet ring cell carcinoma elsewhere.

  • These experiments were carried out to develop the technique of nuclear transplantation necessary for elevating utilization efficiency of high quality embryos and the production of clone animals. Embryos of pronucleus stages were obtained from ICR mice. Removal of pronuclei and their transfer to recipient embryos were carried out by micromanipulation and virus mediation. The results obtained in these experiments were summarized as follows ; 1. Total 337 pairs of pronuclear stage embryos were subjected to nuclear transplantatin and 247 pairs(73.3%) of them were successfully transplanted and the number of fused embryos between transplanted nucleus and cytoplasm was 188 pairs(55.8%). 2. Of the 188 fused embryos cultured in vitro, 174(92.4%), 131(69.7%) and 117(62.2%) embryos were developed to 2-cell, morula and blastocyst stages, respectively. 3. When total 104 nuclear transplanted embryos were transferred to uteri of recipient mice on day 2-3 of pseudopregnancy, 4 of 12 recipient mice were pregnant and the number of embryos developed to young was 28(26.9%).

  • An in vitro construct of three dimensional artificial skin equivalent has been engineered using human cervical epithelial cells and human foreskin fibroblasts with a matrix of bovine type I collagen. Two cell lines were established from cervical uteri cancer tissues which have the HPV(human papillomavirus)18 genome. These two cell lines came from the same origin but have slight differencies in growth rate and tumorigenicity. The organotypic raft culturing of epithelial cells were accomplished at air-liquid interface. The differentiation related characteristics were examined by immunohistochemistry using monoclonal antibodies against EGFreceptor, cytokeratin 5/6/18 as proliferation markers and against filaggrin, involucrin, and cytokeratin 10/13 as differentiation marker. We have obtained the stratification and the differentiation in the artificial skin equivalent, and differentiation-related proteins were expressed more in the C3-artificial skin, and proteins of proliferation were expressed more in the C3N-artificial skin, relatively. We found that reconstituted artificial skin have the same characteristics of differentiation proteins of original tissue or cells of human body.

  • Cervical cancer is the second most prevalent cancer among women, and it arises from cells that originate in the cervix uteri. Among several causes of cervical malignancies, infection with some types of human papilloma virus (HPV) is well known to be the greatest cervical cancer risk factor. Over 150 subtypes of HPV have been identified; more than 40 types of HPVs are typically transmitted through sexual contact and infect the anogenital region and oral cavity. The recently introduced vaccine for HPV infection is effective against certain subtypes of HPV that are associated with cervical cancer, genital warts, and some less common cancers, including oropharyngeal cancer. Two HPV vaccines, quadrivalent and bivalent types that use virus-like particles (VLPs), are currently used in the medical commercial market. While the value of HPV vaccination for oral cancer prevention is still controversial, some evidence supports the possibility that HPV vaccination may be effective in reducing the incidence of oral cancer. This paper reviews HPV-related pathogenesis in cancer, covering HPV structure and classification, trends in worldwide applications of HPV vaccines, effectiveness and complications of HPV vaccination, and the relationship of HPV with oral cancer prevalence.
