  • We performed the floristic study of Carpathian mountains in Ukraine from April 2008 till October 2009. We designated eight important areas to investigate in Ukraine Carpathians including Svydovets, Chornohora, Kuziy-Trybushany, Maramorosh, Uholka-Shyrokyi Luh, Narcissi Valley, Chorna Hora, and Yulivska Hora. The total numbers of vascular plants in investigated area were 1,349 speices from 502 genera and 112 families. The endemic species to Carpathians numbered to 65 from 49 genera belonging to 24 families, and it was corresponded to 4.8% of the 1,349 vascular species. We prepared the list of vascular plants with compiling database on useful plants. Ukraine Carpathians endemic species could be applied as high value products in research and practice. Moreover, the flora of Carpathian mountains which is distributed in five nations in eastern Europe and famous for Primeval Beech Forests (Fagus sylvatica), is useful to compare the floristic study with Korean flora.

  • In the middle areas of South Korea, we collected 308 wild herbaceous species for studying the possibility of landscaping and, growing them at West in Yongin country of Kyunggi province. We observed their vegetative and flowering characteristic. And the result is as follow: 1. 76 species(24.7%) such as Hosta capitata, etc. of them are thought useful for flower-bedding or landscaping for park and ground-covering, while 94 species(30.6%) are regarded useful for ground-covering, potting and indoor-planting. They are Nepatica maxima and Thaliticum minus var. hypoleucum, etc. 46 species(15%) seems to be useful for flower-bedding, ground-covering and potting. 2. 264(85.7%) of all the observed species are for the enjoyment of their flowers, while 36 species(11.4%) for the enjoyment of their leaves, and 9 species(2.9%) for their fruit. They are Viburnum dilatatum, etc. 3. As for the relation of their habits to light conditions, 148 species(48%) grow int he full sun of more than 50,000Lux, 138 species(44.8%) usually in in the half shade of 20,000 to 30,000Lux, 15 species(4.9%) in the shade of some 10,000Lux, and 7 speciese grow either in the full sun or in the shde. 4. some species such as Wasabia koreansa, Allium succuliferum, Asterglehni, Ligulariafisheri, Ligularia stenocephala Epimedium koreanum are considered available as edible plants as well as ornamentals plants, and Houttuynia cordata. Saururus chinensis, Epimedium koreanum need to be further developed not only as ornamental plants but also medicinal plants.

  • This paper presents the methodology to analyze flow duration characteristics and performance prediction for small hydro power(SHP) plants and its application. The flow duration curvecan be decided by using monthly rainfall data at the most of the SHP sites with no useful hydrological data. It was proved that the monthly rainfall data can be characterized by using the cumulative density function of Weibull distribution and Thiessen method were adopted to decide flow duration curve at SHP plants. And, the performance prediction has been studied and development. One SHP plant was selected and performance characteristics was analyzed by using the developed technique. Primary design specfications such as design flowrate, plant capacity, operational rate and annual electricity production for the SHP plant were estimated. It was found that the methodology developed in this study can be a useful tool to predict the performance of SHP plants and candidate sites in Korea.

  • This study was carried out systematically to grasp the resource plants in construct-reserved site of ecological forest, Jecheon-si, Chungcheongbuk-do, Korea. This site was located at $37^{\circ}12'$ in latitude and $127^{\circ}57'$ in longitude and the period of survey was from March to October, 2004. The vascular plants were summarized as 371 taxa; 83 families, 238 genera, 324 species, 44 varieties and 3 forma. And in the results of survey on resource plants, we confirmed 178 taxa of ornamental plants$(47.98\%)$, 232 taxa of edible plants$(62.53\%)$, 257 taxa of medicinal plants$(69.27\%)$ and 154 taxa of other useful plants$(41.51\%)$. The rare and endangered plants designated by Korea Forest Service were 4 taxa; Eranthis stellata, Paeonia japonica, Viola albida and Scopolia japonica.

  • This research was conducted to determine contents of lipids and hydrocarbons for plants distributed in the sourthern region of Korea. The lipid extracts from each plants were purified by solvent fractionation, column chromatography. TLC and analyzed by gas chromatography. As a result, contents netural lipids and phospholipids were the highest in Aleurites fordii and Camellia japonica among the all plants examined. Most of the fatty acids in lipids was palmitic acid, oleic acid and linoleic acid. Content of hydrocarbon was the highest in Fatsia japonica among the all plants examined. Hydrocarbons contained in the plant was mainly more than 16 number of carbons.

  • This study was carried out to select the useful plants for the revegetation of flooded slopes in dams, lakes and streams. In this study, four woody plants were investigated for their survival and growth in nursery with various flooding conditions. The results are as follows: Salix gracilistyla showed a very high survival rate and grew continuously under the complete flooding condition. Especially, it grew better under partly flooding condition than non-flooding condition. Amorpha fruticosa showed growth disorder when the flooding period was over 30 days, but the part of stem which was flooded in water adapted itself by branching the adventitious roots. Wisteria floribunda showed respectively high flooding tolerance until 30 days. Lespedeza bicolor were very weak in excessive moisture and flooding conditions. This study confirmed Salix gracilistyla, Amorpha fruticosa and Wisteria floribunda are efficient woody plants for covering the flooded slopes of dam and various impoundment sites.

The extracts from each plants were purified by solvent fractionation, column chromatography, TLC and analyzed GC and HPLC. As a result, contents crude gingseng saponins and saikosaponins were the highest in Oenothera odorata and Metaplexis japonica, respectively. and contents crude alkaloids was the highest in Metaplexis japonica among the all plants xamined. HPLC was conducted to detect of saponins. As a result, ginseng saponin-like substances was detected in the extracts of Euphobia splendens, Taraxacum mongolicum and Metaplexis japonica, gingsen-like substances and its of saikosaponin c-like substances was detected in the extracts of Camellia japonica and Aleurites fordii. GC was conducted to detect of alkaloid. As a result, nicotine-like substances was detected in only the extracts of Fatsia japonica.
